I just saw DIGGER, and it REALLY IS a $100M Hollywood version of a Roy Andersson movie with bits of Opening Night here and there, and they even make reference to them directly. The whole thing is shot in a studio with fake perspective sets and miniature backgrounds and they show it to you (the ocean is made of plastic sheets, the planes are carried by rails...) also it has a really really good sound design.

Now, is it funny? I laughed a couple times but it is as funny as A Pidgeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence, that is not very.
>>
>>223548897
the Vistavision gimmick is absolutely useless and the movie only really becomes alive when TOM KPY3 gets into his long monologues. I wish that, after the first meta twist they should have separated them more from the meta-world and went more behind the scenes. Actually a movie that has exactly the same concept of public expiation and did this double meta twist better is Peter Greenaway's The Baby Of Macon.

In summary, DIGGER is Iñarritu's most argentinian movie /10.
>>
Cool. I sort of wish the narrative had a traditional melodramatic ending instead of fizzling out without much a climax though. Which is exactly how I felt the about Badlands. Is this Malick's whole thing? Anyway, into The Thin Red Line.

It's a film about having a cuck fetish, though.
He is an edgy nihilist, and only edgy nihilists can understand the beauty of life because they know the perspective of hell to compare. Even something like a cup of coffee ends up being transcendental after you've seen the worst there is to see.

Tarkovsky seems more interested in writing a philosophy book than making a film. The entire thing feels like a philosophy book in movie format.

You're right, it's classics and arthouse.

>>223554575
Of course not. But what analytic philosophy lacks in creativity it makes up for in correctness and logic
>>
The problem with continental niggas is that they got too lax in defining their criteria and vocabulary and started allowing any schizo into crack in their academias (Nick Land for example), while analytics got TOO anal about theur criteria and vocabulary while actually saying nothing of value (Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico Philosophicus). The best philosophers are dudes like Camus or Niezsche, which are close enough to the mind of the schizo so that they can be creative and insightful, but have enough rooting in the mundane so that their vocab is understandable and practical without being excessively literal in its scope.

Anyone who claims this doesn’t realize that Lars is probably a really good dude with a couple of autistic like tendencies. I hope he’s doing okay. I want to like Close Up more but I just don't think it was done particularly well. I would have presented it as a genre thriller, with Sabzian's motives unknown to the viewer until near the end, and the real life case kept secret rather than used as a marketing point. The court footage and meta elements should be revealed later on as the payoff. Kiarostami tells you exactly what happens right at the start, and the dramatised scenes don't add anything of substance to the story.
>>
^ this guy is american
>>
I'm not, and I knew the first response would be snarky. The problem is it's obvious from his first scene that Sabzian couldn't possibly be malicious, which undermines any tension the film could have built on. Watching his schizo ramblings in court is nice, but the film made around them is almost entirely pointless.

Harrison also seems like a twat. Reminds me of one of my insufferable white friends who wanted to be Asian so bad lol. The Stones don’t suck.

You’re probably right. Do you like any Yoko Ono songs? I do. I like her more than any of the Beatles. The films she directed were all pretty bad. I guess John Lennon is my favorite now, and not Harrison. I have yet to find anyone who irl who actually likes Yoko.
>>
>>223567159
There's a very obvious, simple explanation for that

Lennon was a complete asshole to him when they met
Mick and Keith were fans

>Jean-Luc, feeling very inspired, immediately tried to convince John Lennon of the story about Trotsky. Together, they would make a truly revolutionary film, the first of its kind. He spoke too fast and the producer had difficulty translating his words, surprised by the unexpected direction his project was taking. But John Lennon soon interrupted them and, in a shrill voice, his face contorted with rage, launched into a stream of words. Someone had just brought in a tray with tea, cookies, and small sandwiches. Paul McCartney then said amusedly, “I invite the director's wife to have tea with me under the table.” And he lifted the tablecloth to pass it. As if it were the most normal thing in the world—and in that strange context, it was—I imitated him. Sitting across from each other, legs crossed, cup of tea in hand, we exchanged a few comments in a low voice, in an unlikely French-English dialect, about the frantic movement of our companions' legs. Jean-Luc's and John Lennon's legs were tapping on the carpet, and we had to squeeze even closer together to avoid them.

>The miniskirted production company girls crossed and uncrossed their legs. Above our heads, the tone rose. John Lennon and Jean-Luc soon began to shout. “I think it's screwed up,” said Paul, who, seeing my disappointed look, added: “I'm sorry, your husband's project seemed very good... Will you tell him that?” Then he grabbed a white napkin and waved it to signal his departure. “Give me a break!” he said, extending his other hand to help me up. And that was it. John Lennon stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him, followed by Paul McCartney, who kept saying, “I'm sorry, so sorry...” We found ourselves on the sidewalk. The producer, on the verge of tears, could only repeat “I don't understand, I don't understand,” while Jean-Luc, furious, had an absurd fit of jealousy: “What were you doing under the table?”

>— Having tea with Paul McCartney.

Alfred Hitchcock was a fat, autistic drunk. His films were glued together around a laughably simple script (Hitchcock barely knew the basics of screenwriting) about some blonde bitch along with some pretentious mysteries and camera wankery. He would hardly have become popular had he not had a constant horde of competent filmmakers sucking him off and fixing the films for release. Hitchcock's only way to deal with his obesity was to make jokes about his excessive eating because he simply could not admit that he had problems with his lifestyle. In the end, the only merit of "Britain's greatest filmmaker" is how many films about blondes and mysteries he was able to write.
