this is the Joker 2 backlash all over again. audiences hate Digger because it refuses to let them sit in the dark feeling cynical, enlightened, and blameless. the twist rubs their noses in the reality that their entertainment is just a pacifier keeping them quiet while the world rots. sure, the specific climate disaster plot is a swing and a miss since it's mostly overblown bullshit anyway, but it's really just a stand in for the general decay happening everywhere else right in front of us.
