Because it got btfo by a parody that pulled it off better while also being funny. Some bloated beef woman with an evanescent hairline and abhorrent snot plumage, a lazy stoner and a chumpkin sperg are not entertaining enough for an hour and a half of walking in circles.

It's only scary if you don't know it's just amateurs in the woods with a camera pretending to be scared and nothing scary ever happens.

But anon, they made a website promoting it as real found footage! How could people not believe that?

I watched it back in '99. I knew nothing about the film as I didn't have access to the Internet. In fact, I was only made aware the film makers utilised the Internet to create a buzz a few years ago. The only info I knew was 3 students went missing and the footage was patched together to make a feature. I realised the movie wasn't genuine about 30 minutes into the running-time. When the picture ended, there was a collective sigh from the audience, as in: ''Is that it?''. It's the only time I've ever heard a packed cinema air their frustration.

I will never forget watching this as a little kid and being scared shitless at the tent scene with the little kids laughing and the only thing my parents were constantly saying was 'what a trash movie, they are just screaming at each other the entire time'

It just doesn't work unless you believe it's real. Retards back then thought it was but it just doesn't work anymore.

Saw this when it came out when I was 12 years old and I thought it was fucking awesome. It really sparked a love and fascination for independent movies. Also the advertising campaign for this movie was fucking fantastic. This was back in the dialup days and all of the stuff they put online was really the first of it's kind. I still creepy scrolling through the website and all of the affiliated websites.

I also remember seeing it twice in the theaters and black people running out of the theater screaming in fear, lol.

I can see why people would watch it now and think it's stupid but at the time it was fucking kino.

I am surprised this movie is getting to much hate, especially since it was such a culturally explosive film (you all know what it is and you all recognize iconic things from the movie) but I understand how people not from that time wouldn't get it.

It really is something of a time capsule going back to the first gasps of the normie internet and when hoaxes could still go around the world without a bunch of cynical faggots shitting all over it. This was also the time of Coast to Coast AM and conspiracy/woo woo stuff was much much more en vogue back then as the world was still very innocent and naive compared to today.

This film should be appreciated for it's history and cultural impact. But zoomers will just moan that they don't get it. And faggots from that time are going to try to act too cool to admit this was kino and a good horror movie at the time.

I always feel like the entire experience of movie making must have been either a lot of fun or miserable for the actors. They were let loose in the woods with vague directions of what to do and say and where to go. After that, the crew were just messing with them and they had to go along with it, but still, being in the dark woods at midnight hearing creepy shit still has to mess with you at a deeper level, like what if this is secretly a snuff movie in the making, these thoughts have to sneak up in your mind.

Even when they had to change locations they were put in the car, told to shut up, not say anything, and then they were dropped off and that's it, improvise now. It really is a special movie in the way it was made.
