What's with highly praised horror movies being absolute fucking garbage? Yes I just finished Obsession, 1 hour and 30 minutes of shit just being awkward and cringe with bad dialogue followed by 15 minutes of a dumbass conclusion that made it seem all like a bad parody of a bad movie.

Just finished. RSOS #07Forgot to even post about this. Hadn't seen it since opening weekend, and the argument that it's not a horror movie is ridiculous, but it is generally a failure, imo. Which is too bad, because the production design is 200/10 and the casting is outstanding. Jessica Chastain's nose is erotic. The story is so shit and everything else is great, so it's a boring movie I genuinely wish was good. Regal has done 4 haunted house movies in a row (2 of them with Lili Taylor, lmao) and it's time to move onto a new genre.

Bloody Tennis (2026) dir. Nikias Chryssos Sandra Guldber Kampp is fucking beautiful. there was not enough sex, those were the real matchups lacking. Challenger was hotter, and im not even a faggot.>grow win transcendMatriphagy is the eating pattern where children eat their mother. This film uses that as the central metaphor to explore the issues in womens sports. and then it adds a chain to the metaphor by making womens sports act as a metaphor for motherhood in general. The characters are daughters of accomplished female athletes. and as competitors they are sustained and grow by the effect they have on each other.the next central imagery in use is the masonic imagery. the checker floor in the chapel, the altar of ritual the prayers and what not, in conjunction with the tennis. its a fun little aesthetic, but i dont think it really has much to say about whats going on. maybe i dont know enough of my occult lore.the film seems to be asking us what the mother owes to the daughter, and what the daughter deserves in return. we all have a bloated sense of self importance because we all wish we could be theperfect little baby whos every need is immediately doted to by the all powerful source of pleasure.as a slasher, its interesting there is not a lot of slashing going on. theres the penetration at the beginning but not a lot other than that. its a secluded film, not really that interested in the effect men have on society, but the two men are characatures of what the female gaze finds unappealing.oh and tennis rackets are yonic. This movie, while symbolically much more rich than the previous two ive analyzed, also doesnt really satisfy me in a deeper way. maybe the witch spoiled me but i wanna be scared and also filtered. that being said it was dreadfully entertaining, the deaths were creative, a few genuine laughs (including the climax) and very colorful characters.Hellraiser next.

Just watched the first episode, and it's further proof that Mike Flanagan is incapable of getting a convincing performance out of anyone. It doesn't help that his dialogue is about as contrived as it gets, but still, the actors make the worst out of the material they have to work with.

Since it had been mentioned in this thread, I watched "Sweet Sixteen" (1982). Another "thousand dollar movie", but not nearly as much fun as "Humanoids from the Deep" was. There doesn't seem to be a story or a plot, very loosely connected scenes just happen one after the other. Since no character has any motivation to do anything, the actors don't have to act - so they don't, they kinda just perform the actions that are written in the horrible script. I don't think this even qualifies as "horror". Technically it's a slasher, but the Greek director fails miserably at creating atmosphere or evoking even slight emotions. This movie was so boring I fell asleep watching it and had to watch it in two goes. It gets 2/10 only because it was shot on Panavision and the camerawork was decent.

>>223635128in my experience it's pretty typical of movies directed by non-English speakers, for obvious reasons. they have no idea the guy's giving a bad performance. I honestly wonder when I'm watching foreign movies whether the performances are any good or not, like how would I know? dudes could be using the japanese equivalent of a goofy southern accent and I'd have no idea
>>223635128The Chinese are the same and probably far worse. I think a bit of it is an ego/pride thing and the other part is that foreigners get paid a shitload to do that kind of junk so they're willing to look retarded for some good money.Slightly relevant is Bart Baker, he's essentially a slave in China since he has to be a pro-China retard and make songs about China constantly, but he gets paid an insane amount of money to do it. The drawback is he has to live in China, has no friends there and none of his family are there. There was a short doc on him a while ago and he basically just sits in an apartment making videos all day for Chinese social media.
>>223635159>they have no idea the guy's giving a bad performance. I don't speak Hindi or Mandarin but I can still identify utterly shit acting in their movies.
>>223635185well, you can tell if something's just absurdly bad, but imagine something like a japanese The Room. you'd have no idea "I definitely have breast cancer" was hilarious because not speaking the language you don't get how inappropriate the timing or the delivery are
>>223635159often times the japs give the white people in their movies specific, literal or phonetic directionyou can find stories of them saying they try to play it normal and the jap director tells them to speak with more "emotion" but from the japanese perspective that usually means just being louder but also speaking english in an unnatural, robotic way
Tried to watch Below and it's what I expected. "There's a monster in the water" stretched out over six 40min episodes, when it should've just been a 90min horror movie. Another boring slog Netflix show
>>223635199I suppose so. Physical acting is easy enough to tell and I don't know what the excuse was for this movie, but I get your point about struggling to identify bad acting when it comes to speaking and I'd admittedly probably struggle to notice it in a foreign language movie.
>>223635211that makes a lot of sense to me, good explanation.
>>223635235you can also look up whenever they have A-list hollywood people in japanese commercials and see how they're suddenly weird even though you've seen them act perfectly well dozens of times in normal shit
>>223635211Two things I hate in Japanese & SK shows/movies; non-Japanese/Koreans with speaking roles, and Japanese/Koreans speaking English. I can count on my hand the number of times it wasn't broken as hell and sound like shit. Just stick to your own language and people.
this new Carrie is very dumb and inaccurate to the book but the new Carrie actress is so good and they're spending way more time with her going power-mad and keeping her mom as a hostage for being such a bitch
>>223635252That makes a bit of sense. I wonder if weird acting is why Twin Peaks ended up so popular there then, the commercials weren't unlike the show but were like a more played up version of the shows acting.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHgz9yu4kVk
>>223635267the best is when they have a character who has spent time in the US or wherever and "knows" english and then they have them speak english and they sound like a fucking retard and no one can tell
>>223635277I assume it's the same when English actors speak another language they just learned for the role and it's incomprehensible to native speakers. Happens a lot with Russian and they need to add subtitles when it plays in Russia because they have no fucking clue what they're saying.
i made a horrible mistake

>>223635267I love Shin Godzilla, but it brings me out of the movie whenever the politician lady raised in America speaks English. It is clear English isn't her first language. Nothing wrong with it, just noticeable. I am guessing not as noticeable for Japanese audiences, just like how I can't tell apart a native Japanese speaker versus one that learned it as a second language.
>>223635384They don't notice because their schools can't teach English. They learn it their entire school lives and most can't say more than 3 words. America fucks up foreign language teaching too, but it's better. Why they still teach french, I have no clue. Should only being teaching Mexican Spanish and Mandarin.

WNUF Halloween Special (2013) dir. Chris LaMartina heh, pretty good. i liked the authenticity of it, it was made by someone who really gives a shit about the aesthetic of the time. for example the 7 digit phone numbers. that being said the bumpers got grating by the end and the frequency of commercial breaks was too high. commercials arent this frequent except maybe during the super bowl showing. it took me out of the feeling toward the end. im not talking about the feeling of the special broadcast, but the feeling of the whole thing. that being said it was SUPER cozy and well worth the watch. had no idea that the following wasf rom a movie and not a real broadcast>do you believe in ghosts?>no, but i know who to call if there are>ah right and who would that be>g-ghost busters...>very funny. ok, uh sir...and the whole movie has this sort of feeling. it really lends to the experience. wish i had a bowl of popcorn for this one. might watch its sequel. anyway, thats my triple feature for tonight. its been fun guys, see you tomorrow. heres the list of films i watched so far this month:>Cure 1997 キュア dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa >The Haunting in Connecticut 2009 dir. Peter Cornwell >The Witch 2015 dir. Robert Eggers >The Autopsy of Jane Doe 2016 dir. André Øvredal >Angst 1983 dir. Gerald Kargl >The Golden Glove 2019 Der Goldene Handschuh dir. Fatih Akin >Bloody Tennis 2026 dir. Nikias Chryssos >WNUF Halloween Special 2013 dir. Chris LaMartina
>>223635716the commercials becoming more frequent and also repeating is one of the jokes. the more things go off the rails, the more they have to cut to commercial.love that the ghostbusters gag had actually fooled you, it speaks to how great a job they did and how other stuff that tries this, like Buffet Infinity or even WNUF 2, never lives up to it.did you catch that the recording we're watching is the killer's?
>>223635716>images you can hear
>>223635716The sequel tries much more openly to be funny and doesn't work at all because of it.
Me just waiting for my headphone cable to arrive so I can get back to watching new movies.

>>223635808That still has music. Only hearing out of one side is annoying as hell.
>>223635806You got that Bog chin
>>223634348>Sandra Guldber Kampp is fucking beautifulAgreed. She was great in this and I'm genuinely baffled by the terrible reception. I love how over-the-top it got right at the end.
I'm back from my 3 day vacation (iykyk), what did I miss?
>enjoying Carrie>episode 7 out of 8>that ugly Irish bitch from House of Usher and Midnight Club shows up
>>223635867nuh uh

>>223636005I watched Crimson Peak yesterday and I'm confident that if nothing else Chastain is going to be great
I can’t binge entire seasons anymoreIf a show isn’t released weekly, I don’t even bother
they butchered the prom spaz out scene in the carrie, it's all chopped and screwed with narration scenes and flash-forwards
>>223636047>guest director: DJ Screwman, what a get
>>223635750>did you catch thati did not. what textual evidence do you have of this? i cant really see how you would be able to tell. >repeating is one of the jokesthe repetitive nature of the commercials didnt bother me, it was that wed get two minutes of commercials. then thirty seconds of special, then two more minutes, but it wasnt too awful. could have left some on the cutting floor though. >Buffet Infinityi watched that hoping for something that i unwittingly didnt know already existed in WNUF. its genuinely sad how weak buffet infinity is, but the concept i think has enough strength to really be good. microbudget on the east coast seems to be a really strong community of dedicated creatives. also i didnt really mention it but i also really noticed and liked the era appropriate political stuff. i mean it really does give the impression. >>223635871yes. fully agree. the second to last death genuinely had me hooting and hollering. exactly the way to do this, it would have been such a failure if they tried to go the route of terrifying and serious. reminds me of how terrifier 2 is successful because they really let Art sit in frame and just be a clown at times. >>223635878high concept mystery boxes.
>>223636005When did smiling become the most terrifying thing to people?
>>223636083its not the smiling its the eye contact
>>223636088Can confirm. I hate looking people in the eye and them looking at me.
>>223636088Pretty sure it's both.
>>223636047>chopped and screwedKino
>>223636047Every time Ellen DeGeneres showed up I wanted Carrie to force-rip open her face face
>>223636083idk when it was popularize the the trend of grinning and slamming something into your own face being "scary" seems to have taken off with Smile and it really fucking annoys me. Obsession even had examples and it totally took me out of the movie. its cliche at this point and very annoying. seems like other mommy is doing it to signal the struggle of a demon controling a humanoid body though, which isnt an excuse but i mean it makes sense if its trying to appear like a loving mother.
>>223636117>grinning and slammingI'm sure it started even earlier, but Hereditary popularized it.
>>223636117Aaaahhhhhh
>>223636078>i did not. what textual evidence do you have of this? i cant really see how you would be able to tell.the final actual murders didn't get broadcast on TV, silly
also they mad carrie's mom not crazy or villainous enough for her to try to kill carrie at the endbut she still just tries to brutally murder carrie at the end
>>223636047they had one jobalso the entire bettis carrie is on youtubeit's very canadian
>>223636161oh yeah. i guess ive seen enough fake stupid 'broadcasts' that something like that seemed like an 'in universe possiblity' but now that you mention it its pretty obvious. but if i am gonna hold it to that level of realism... how did they not know it was the protesters because we see glimpses of the outfit during the axe scenes and the same dude breaches the filming space at the beginning of the specialp.s. typing beginning is like a fucking rhythm game and i always type it beginnign
carrie's mom has powersshe didn't even diethere's MULTIPLE factions of psychic women competing for carrie's allegiance this was very dumb
>>223636117i had an other mommy after my dad died
>>223636218also note in the book carrie got the telekinesis from her dad, but this show has some weird >actually psychics are all women and men oppress themtheme even though carrie is literally never oppressed by a man at any point in the series so the interstitials about how joan of arc died from misogyny or whatever are completely irrelevant
rebecca halls feet are busted (british) but she looks fantastic in the beginning of onslaught
chances VHS Mixtape is available on torrent sites in the next 24 hours? I go on a little trip but I really really want to marathon it before going
Why is Eddie Munster a werewolf when his mom is a vampire and his dad the Frankenstein monster? This makes no sense, immersion ruined
onslaught is goofballs so far. i'm enjoying it more than i expected.
>>223636062>>guest director: DJ Screw
>>223636273>rebecca halls feet are busted (british)I always liked Hall but never bothered checking out her feet in particular. What English rose do you think has the best grippers?
[SIMP POST] damn Madchen Amick is really all you need to make a good film huh (half-joking as Hooper is the man but she's really incredible in this)
>come to /hor/ to avoid Carrie spoilers>Anon is spoiling Carrie hereReeee
>>223633555>and the kick is good!
Praying for everyone watching the new bullshit flimflan(agan) Carrie series instead of just rewatching De Palma's masterpiece.
So it sounds like Hill House is still Flanagan's best horror show. Midnight Mass wasn't really scary. Why can't he top it? It's been almost 10 years now.
>>223633613a I remember the floating skeleton ghost thing at the start of the movie scaring the shit out of me and then being bored to tears for the rest.
>>223636193>how did they not knowthat I can't speak on, but like you said the other thing is obvious, but for some reason most people I talk to seem to miss it.
Good things>Bela Lugosi as Ygor>Inspector KochBad Things>Extremely unusing of Frankentein's Monster Karloff>Rushed Ending partSad mixed feelings, started promising but... should have been more
>>223634754The effects for when his face gets all fucked up looked genuinely great but the story seems to be a super generic revenge plot Also I'm pissed that they changed the character's name from Basil Karlo to like Matt Jones or something for seemingly no reason
>>223637151>KarloffThat limey cocksucker can rot in hell for all I care
>>223636967Is this actually good though? Hooper is kinda hit and miss for me, but with Perkins in the mix it should be kino.
>>223637189why? what did he do to you?
Here's a glowing review for Other Mommy: https://youtu.be/s_MYeynLMiE
>>223637286She also loved Leviticus.
>>223637235It's a line from Ed Wood (1994)
frogman status?
>>223637399She's an Australian in America doing some film festivals so she's probably hyped. I didn't see Leviticus since it's a fag movie. She does a lot of extreme horror reviews. She compared Other Mommy to Dust Bunny, which I quite enjoyed, saying it had a dream atmosphere and stretched logic. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
>>223637454aw, I didn't remember the line :(
>>223637481Nobody knows when it'll get an actual release date or if it wants to keep doing festivals. Frogman is definitely a Chad though.
>>223637492It's a very good movie, you should rewatch especially for the Halloween season.
>>223637492>>223637519It's Tim Burton's best work imo. I first watched that film with my dad. I should watch it again.
>>223637481>me and my girlfriend (imaginary)
>>223637219Perkins' appearance in it is honestly pretty limited, more of a "hey this guy deserves a little something" rather than a real solid role. it's a pretty minor film for sure, but it looks great and I think it shares with a lot of Hooper's later stuff a certain warmth in his approach to his characters. it reminds me a bit of Romero's work from around the same time like Monkey Shines and The Dark Half in that it's centered around the unleashing of repressed and unconscious desiresultimately not something you need to go out of your way for but enjoyable
>>223637532fun fact: Burton made Ed Wood instead of Cabin Boy, which Chris Elliot wrote specifically for him.
Remember /hor/, THIS is your queen.
>>223636083>>223636117The creepy smile was not invented by A24 or Smile jfc. Never heard of an evil laughter either? Getting tired of whiny 4chan autists who thinks everything they don't like about the world didn't exist until 10 years ago after they became bitter 30+ year old NEETs.

>>223636083Because it shows that whatever entity is smiling at you has malicious intent and takes glee in what they are going to do. There is no reasoning or understanding, they simply want to hurt or harm you. That's pretty scary imo.
