just watched v/h/s mixtape

-dance, dance, dance, dance: fun short that doesn't take itself too seriously and rides the wave of recent mascot horrors. The practical effects were really cool

-heartbeat: by far the best segment in this year collection and personally one of my favourite in the series. The story is simple and short but the horror it conveys is surprisingly visceral

-the music of mr.sze: lovecraftian entry that starts interesting but gets held back by the goofy monster prop. Still enjoyable, reminiscent of stuart gordon rendition of dreams in the witch house

-death tone: i wasn't feeling this one in the beginning but as the story went on it grew on me. Fitting end segment for the movie

>Why is it so well regarded?
What, the second? It's not.

It's more highly regarded than the rest of the franchise (excluding the newest one), but that's not saying much. Few horror franchises took as sharp of a nosedive as Hellraiser.
>>
>>223652838
its definitely well regarded on /tv/ because it's a good movie. there's not a whole lot of sequelness to the sequels, canon is bullshit in any decent franchise. hellraiser 2 is just a good movie.
>>
I watched "The Devil Conspiracy" (2023) and it was not a good movie. It's competently made and even has a proper decent budget for actors, sets and props, which probably goes further in Czechia where this movie is from. But unfortunately all of that failed to translate into a good movie. The plot is something you definitely haven't heard before: Lucifer has been chained in hell and an evil cult wants to bring him back. For that Lucifer needs to possess a child, but normal children aren't up to it, they die. So -- get this -- the cult steals the Shroud of Turin, and they fertilize a human egg cell with Jesus' DNA from the shroud, because Baby Jesus will be strong enough to be possessed by the Devil. They implant the fertilized egg into the female lead character Laura and lower her into the depths of hell (which are conveniently located beneath a Bohemian castle in the Czech countryside). There Lucifer simply drops his eternal chains, turns into smoke and enters Laura's body. Voila, Satan will be born again! The archangel Michael (who is an African for some reason) then possesses an Italian priest that had been killed by the cult to try to stop all of this. With gunfights and explosions. The people of the Czech Republic are largely non-religious or atheists, which probably explains the bullshit level of this movie. 3/10, mainly because of good production value.
>>
>>223652838
i enjoyed hellraiser 2 more as a kid. cool visuals, cool creatures, doctor octopenis is fun, jules is back, the mythos is expanded, not to mention the legendary (pun intended) pinhead lines. as an adult, im inclined to agree that the first one is way better. the first one has a much better story and watching jules go off the deep end is more fun.

shout out to christopher youngs epic scores. these movies wouldnt be nearly as good without them. they drive home the dark circus tone.
>>
>>223652991
Yeah it isn't a good movie but I'm glad I saw it just for its out their concepts
>Satan is too proud to possess any normal human
>his pride demands he must have Christ body himself
Plus the cloning and the company selling historical figures and other stuff. Just an overall plot and ideas you don't see often
What did you think of the twist that Christ's body is holy so when Satan enters it the body's divinity works as a cage trapping him?
>>
>>223653089
>What did you think of the twist
Well, for one thing it made all of what St. Michael did and fought for futile, because in the end he just says Jesus will be stronger than the Devil and does nothing. The other thing is was it a twist, though? The final scene shows Satan entering the body of new Baby Jesus as if he'd won in the end. Plus Michael didn't chain Lucifer again when he entered hell, he just freed the children of the previous Lucifer possession attempts. Also why was the Jesus child Asian? Did they need diversity points or what?

In that it's a typical modern movie - the fights and explosions and the bloodshed keep the viewer entertained, but when you stop to think about the story for two seconds, you realize that none of it made sense.
>>

>>
>>223653292
clearly the 2nd one
>>
why are half the posts in /hor/ just whiners whining?
>>
>>223653200
I'd say it was a twist. Of course after the fact thinking about it yeah a divine holy object would trap and gold Satan and Christ's body fits it. But like you said they fought it so much you assumed it would be bad if Satan got his way. Kind of neat that Satan's fall is of his own making but does undercut the effort leading to it. I took the final scene as Satan trying to leave but the kid Christ forcing him back in to his prison. Also I thought the kid looked like some Arab thing
But yeah it's one of those ideas are bigger than it's ability to tell the idea movies.

I'm only 43 minutes in but damn this years VHS feels rough. Even with its faults on a rewatch I still feel positive to Halloween, Beyond, even '85, but this feels rushed. It honestly felt like they forgot they had to make an entry this year considering we heard about the SCP spinoff before this, and they just rushed it together. Also feels like VHS is trying to get too into mascot horror in hopes they have something to market with merch, considering you see the Fun Size guy's head from Halloween as an Easter egg, damn that segment sucked.
I can't believe I'm saying this but Ragebait may have been the better FF anthology this year, and that's basically Temu VHS. Hoping it gets better...

I can deal with things that are amateurish in execution but are still charming in their own way, but there's something about this year's entry that just really doesn't work for me in a way I haven't experienced since '99 or Viral. The first and last segments at least had some great gore effects, and the anthology format also works with the "mixtape" feel they're going for, but some parts also don't really feel very found footagey since one short is animated and another is just a cool music video. Its really hard to put into words and maybe I need more time to process it, but I really can't shake the feeling that this year was rushed or given a more limited budget while the SCP entry is given all the resources (especially since A24 is involved, maybe they want to give that a theatrical release).
Music wasn't that bad though. Also I'm very inexperienced with GWAR so maybe this is just their bit.

Absolutely insane movie, but in a good way. All the characters are either lunatics or mentally retarded, but that makes the events develop in such an unpredictable way that keeps you engaged in the film. And even thought I'm not a fan of happy endings in horror films I really liked this one
The Japanese couple stole the fucking show, the girl's tiny titties where fucking perfect
I guess when watching Japanese movies one should expect things like this, but I never thought I'd see a NTS scene in a fucking horror movie

I think I figured out why V/H/S Mixtape didn't work for me, and its probably because there's only so much you can do with music or sound with a theme. Maybe I'm just not enough of a musicphile to appreciate it, but compared to aliens/sci-fi with Beyond or anything going down on a Halloween night, it feels like the writers were ultimately limited in what they could do on a budget.

Goofy as hell, but enjoyable. 6/10
>TCM (2003)
Obviously not as good as the original, but I found it quite disturbing and well made. 7/10
>TCM (2022)
One of the better offshoots to come out in recent years. It's also one of the rare chud-coded films, which makes it sort of a novelty - unfortunately it went so far over most anons heads that they actually think it's "woke" lol. 7/10

The only Hellraiser sequels I thought were well made and halfway enjoyable were the 2nd and the most recent - the rest of them are slop of the lowest order. Hellraiser 2022 is almost as good as the first, actually.

Just marathoned vhs mixtape. I get them all mixed up so doing a franchise ranking is impossible. I liked beyond that Im sure of. I think I sort of liked halloween. The raatma one was decent except for the narrative frame (worse in the franchise), the other 90s one sucked. Then there's the one with trevor which was bad but not infuriating. Viral is the worst of them. 1 and 2 I dont even like as much as most people despite monster waifu and thai cult. Right I think I got them all. Ranking would probably be Beyond > 2 > Halloween > 94 > 99 > Mixtape > 85 > 1 > Viral. Now if you ask me about the segments in Mixtape, I'd say the puppets one was kinda cool even if it has no story, the kills and the puppets themselves were amazing. Black grandma one was very pretty but it was like 2 minutes long. Russian bunker one was probably my least favorite, cool concept but clearly they had a budget of $75 because there is no gore and no interesting visuals, at least the chick was hot. Violin was ok, cool but unexplored concept and the visuals at the end are top notch, but its funny, I realized instantly that it was the one by Dickerson, it reminded me of Mick Garris' segment on nightmare cinema, what is it with mid tier boomer horror directors and music? last one by rza was an interesting concept but it was obvious he just wanted to create his own waifu oc, cant blame the guy. buried one made 0 sense to me, the lyrics and what we saw weren't the same thing. And gwar segments were funny the first couple times but I got tired of them

Watched when evil rises.

The whole lore stuff was cool as was treating demonic possession like a zombie outbreak but I'm getting fed up of "there is a ritual that'll solve everything... BUT IT GOES WRONG FROM SOMEONE BEING AN IDIOT" plot elements in horror. Also the wide knowledge of demonic possessions is kinda at odds with there not being enough people to deal with it.

V/H/S/MIXTAPE was actually a solid entry. The highs were great and the lows didn't get remotely close to this series' lowest lows. Gwar fucking around as the wraparound was a copout, but it spared us from the usual dogshit story that plagues the entire film.
I don't have a burning hatred of mascot horror like some people do, so the puppet story was probably my favorite. I feel like the soundproof room could have taken that spot with just a bit more lore/exposition, as the concept was pretty visceral. The short animation felt like pure filler that was basically about generational domestic abuse and I found it tiresome. The monster in the violin story was goofy looking and made me think of a cacodemon. The final one started off well, but eventually felt like it wasn't taking itself seriously and lost that vaguely satanic feel (and I was hoping for a payoff at the end, like perhaps resurrection or possession).
>>
>>223657537
Oh, totally forgot the music video segment. Interesting concept to make a short horror as a dated music video, but I didn't find this specific plot to be terribly compelling, and it lacked decent gore.
>>
>>223651305
If it's slop (I would call it schlock), then it's kinoslop/schlock. Deal with it.
>>
>>223653865
It's got an interesting story, it's occasionally spooky and the ending is both funny and disturbing. It's not his best film but it is a good watch.

It's a bit of a shame he now loves his films to always feature some sort of shounen manga psychic now. Sayuri almost works but not quite, I'd love to see a more talented horror comedy director like Sam Raimi take on the idea.
>>
>>223657362
Ti West is extremely hit or miss desu. When he makes something like Pearl he knocks it out of the park, but X and MaXXXine just felt like lesser versions of better films (TCM and Scream 3 respectively)

Safe Haven is the standout
Nothing egregiously bad, some might dislike the last segment
GOOD

>VHS 85

Ambrosia is the standout
GOOD

Home Haunt was delightful

The "kid's show is actually evil" isn't particularly original, but it was fine
Cabin clip was too short
HATED the Intermission segments
respected death tone and heartbeat as decent, but nothing here I'd recommend or re-watch
OK

>VHS 99
Middling
Suicide Bid, To Hell and Back, and Ozzy's Dungeon, none of them felt that satisfying.
Ozzy's Dungeon is maybe the best of the bunch
OK

>VHS
Nothing great here
Amateur Night and 10/31/98 were the mediocre best of the bunch

New Exorcist movie trailer leaked

Looks better than the last one. Some shots/scenes give off Exorcist 3 vibes. But Flanagan has been hit and miss as of late so we'll see.

literal cashgrab slop. fuck off with his shit. All these sequels are fucking terrible and the new one will be too. stop fucking pretending.
>>
>>223660577
Are they just remaking Exorcist 3?
>>
>>223660577
I will watch it for she
>>
im so glad we never got another friday the 13th film throughout this slop era
>>
>>223660602
whole movie felt very stoopid, especially the ending was so anticlimatic
>>
>>223660682
the era is tv shows, and f13 is getting one of those.
Freddy on the other hand is nowhere to be seen.
>>
>>223660682
The shit remake came out a 5 years before the slop era and it was dogshit. Revisionists pretend that it isn't but it was and still is.
>>
>>223660724
tv show is fine because i can just ignore it. if a movie came out, i couldnt help but watch it in all its contemporary mediocrity. who knows, maybe the tv show wont be so bad. i still probably wont watch it.
>>
>>223660682
I liked the reboot
>>
>>223660741
i liked it in spite of its flaws but its not as good as the mongo-jason era
>>
>>223660741
The post-Rob Zombie era where all these slashers were getting edgelord remakes with sleek ugly ass cinematic visuals were so painful to sit through. All of them lacked the fun and charm of the original movies

You’re a gross 80’s loser.

house of wax, the crazies, TCM, and the hills have eyes were pretty good
>>
>>223660810
wow nice low effort bait, retard. Enjoy this last (You) before this thread dies.
>>
the hitcher remake though...goddamn that was an awful movie
>>

>house of wax,
No it really fucking wasn't. Literally the most cookie cutter generic popcorn horror film of the 2000's with shitty CGI, bland forgettable story, and a forced interracial relationship. Also it's not even a remake. If you had actually watched these movies, you would know that.
>the crazies
who fucking cares. Both the original and the remake are painfully mediocre.
>TCM
Literally the pointless remake of all time. No reason to ever watch it when you already have the original which is a perfect horror movie. Perhaps if the remake had at least offered some nudity, I'd give it a pass but it couldn't even do that because the director was a fucking pussy and turned it down even when the main actress said she was down to do it. Also changing Leatherface from being a retard to just really really angry was a stupid choice.
>Hills Have Eyes
both versions suck.

You have shit taste
>>
>>223660724
There's talk of TWO Nightmare on Elm Street remakes coming up, from different companies. Or maybe one's a sequel, it's worded fruity.
