I watched the film today.

Went in completely blind, not having read any reviews or synopses. I was hesitant at first, since the film seemed to be somewhat similar to Don't Look Up, a notoriously preachy and terribly written film, but as time went on, I understood that this film intends to criticise precisely the sort of films like DLU. Through the main character, Curtis Markson, the audience is exposed to the idea of there being more nuance to the issue at hand, while the play's director explains the necessity of black comedy for a despondent audience, both in-universe and metanarratively. Kenny Rockwell, the producer of the play and nephew of the person our main character portrays, acknowledges both sides and even says that they're both correct.

This film reminded me a lot of Dr. Strangelove, particularly in its comedy and acting. I thought the performances were very interesting, and while Cruise does dominate the film, the entire cast did a very solid job. While watching, I noticed how exaggerated the performances were, before realising that this is something real stage actors do to convey emotion and information to people sitting further back.

I'm a big fan of Iñárritu's work, and I liked the film a lot, but I acknowledge that this film in particular will be (and evidently has already been) a hard sell for most, especially compared to his more mainstream films like The Revenant or Biutiful. I give it a 7,5/10.

Inarritu, he is a friend of mine, my namesake, his father name him after me when I save his life in the Amazon, long story there, but Inarritu, he make film, Amores Perros, very dirty, very nasty, I love it, you love it, he make name for himself, he make Babel and shows the Japanese girl, she has hairy culo, yes? Is fantastic!
So this film, he also make. And he tell me Uncle Alejandro, he call me this, he tell me I am not sure how to do this. I ask what is problem, simple climate change film like Day After Tomorrow, big Hollywood star, big explosion, easy money then make good pelicula again after, but no he say to me, he say he want make good this time, with this, make art with this!
And I see his problem. How make art when make big Hollywood thing, how to dig for gold in shit? And I ask him this, how do you dig for gold in shit, and he light up! He light up, his eyes beaming, he shine like aura of Virgin Mary, and he say to me Uncle Alejandro, this is what we do, we dig! We dig deeper!
Alright, calm down Inarritu, I say to him, like a puppy, yes? Calm down. I ask him, how to dig deeper, what is deeper here? What is below surface? And he say artifice, is all artifice. So he make the movie about that artifice. Is all fake, so he make the movie about fake, see? And below the fake, there is reality. So there was reality, real thing happen, then fake story is above that, then Hollywood shit is above that, and this he make, like this he make! This is Digger!
Incredible!

It has been said a lot in these threads about how the marketing sucks (which I agree) but lets think about it. Clearly they wanted the play to be a plot-twist so they omitted it from everything. So I ask (you): How would you market this movie? You have to hide to play so clearly theres not much you can do already. Most of it its just "watch It because Tom Cruise is in it" but I guess zoomers dont care about him anymore. I think I would show a bit in more of the backstage scenes with only Cruise in it to keep It a bit confusing but without revealing the plot twist.
>>
>>223691728
You said this last thread.
>>
>>223692271
The play was revealed fairly early on, so I don't think hiding it was their aim.

i watched the first 20 minutes or so and it comes off as heavy handed "evil white old capitalism man who doesnt care about the global ramifications"

also fun fact he literally MADE ben stiller allow him to play this same exact character in Tropic Thunder and specifically made him jewish, that was his ultimatum to being in the movie

Layer 1: this movie is about how evil white people destroyed the world with climate change!
Layer 2: this is a pretentious art movie about how evil white people destroyed the world with climate change, but with extra steps for Oscar bait
Layer 3: this is decent if heavy-handed satire about how people try to mock their enemies and control the narrative around a subject that is so far beyond their control the very notion of making art about it is doomed to failure
Layer 4: this is a clever and strangely subtle satire about its own complicity in the liberal media's portrayal of its enemies, an active and self-aware participant in the process of creating false narratives while also critiquing the creation of those narratives
Layer 5: I like it when Tom Cruise yells and makes funny dance moves

Keep digging, brother

i really liked it, i got it in imax and wasnt disappointed. still trying to make up my mind on the film. as much as people are making such a big deal about the big speech, for me, i think the bigger point of the film is that art (actual art) is above, and more complicated than, the slop that most of the time we just slop up. The film can only make this argument because the story within the story is interesting and open to interpretation, as we obviously see from the conversations with the actors, director, and producer. I don't this argument is as trite as "art is complicated man" but more like "things that are actually worth calling art, are interesting, and people experience them differently. And it can be complicated, and open to interpretation, but still have points that are obviously, actually true (like Cruise's speech) .

I think the fact that the development of the movie/storyline is so dependent on revealing new information to the audience really fucked up their ability to market this film.

in the trailer they focused only on the frame story as the actual story of the movie which was necessary to not spoiler additional reveals, like the frame story being a frame story, the fact they are in the future, the fact that the events of the play actually happened, the nephew thing, etc., most of which are released gradually to the audience .

at my screening last night there was an old boomer guy who I could immediately tell was the type of elderly left winger that would have absolutely loved the movie if it had just remained an exaggerated don't look up style hit piece on nebulous "elites". he was laughing really loudly for the first third of the movie until the reveal and then he spent most of the rest of the movie muttering things to his wife. the funny thing was any time it went back to being a ridiculous parody (the scene where goodman is sitting on the end of his bed, most of the scene in the airplane, and the scene where it's revealed goodman is dead in the freezer on the oil rig) he was still loudly laughing along with the movie as if it were an snl skit. honestly it made the entire film experience way more immersive and interesting because I could directly see the type of guy the movie was criticizing and observe his reactions to what was happening and gauge if he could tell he was being criticized(I don't think he could).

I noticed on the second viewing that Curtis wife seems kinda off. Idk why but she just seemed kinda cold and reserved?

also schizo theory time (only read if you've seen the movie):
theory: the crisis that happens to curtis (actor who plays digger) family member maybe was literally manufactured by diggers nephew in order to keep curtis in line. he knew that the actor curtis had been causing problems and so to keep him in line he puts his sister in danger. maybe he is so rich and powerful he could manipulate a flight. (ok maybe I'm smoking crack now)

theory 2 (most likely): he is using curtis crisis to benefit himself. by helping him with his sister, he keeps him in line.

and theory 3 (how its presented): Kenny does this act solely to help curtis because he likes him, its unlikely he would do this for any average person.

thoughts?

Actually I’m a based Chad if you must know.
But there’s just no reason to embellish so many gory deaths like that. It’s one thing for a flick like saving private ryan that’s going for shocking realism. This was just videogame tier blood and guts headshot after headshot while the lead actors kind of just moved around from mark to mark barely noticing that another 6 men just got arrowed to the face.
It was sloppy, and gross. Not cinematic at all.
>>
The tuna scene was the moment when I realized the movie was aiming for something more than "right wing bad".

When I first found out it was a meta narrative, I lost interest. However, after seeing it, I think combining a meta narrative with satire adds a surprising amount of depth.

Something that struck me was that despite climate change and the cataclysmic destructive ice chunks, technology continued to advance. There is a line within the play that the one heading for Alaska was going to wipe out the oil refineries and mitigate the power of the US dollar. However, we see an extravagant production that definitely cost a considerable amount of money and thus would mean the tickets were not cheap either.
Also, I found the crowd cheering Digger's suicide humorous. The treat him as the person who has ruined the world. However, from what we saw other than new technology, society is functioning just as it was in the past but with small inconveniences; masks, power outages and the temperature being hotter. Society is still nominal enough for cross continental flights and extravagant theater plays. Add in Digger's monologue about society needing oil out of convenience, society's need for convenience led to future inconveniences that they use Digger as a scapegoat for their hatred.
>>
>>223700106
>society is functioning just as it was in the past but with small inconveniences

I think the end is meant to imply that the US is pretty fucked up. There's a guy in a mask with a rifle in a tank just casually posted up next to a theater.

You're a schizo.
He was legitimately helping.
The daughter missing and the actor worrying about it is a thematic parallel to the play within the movie's world. Despite nature's attempt (hurricane/ice shelfs) to eradicate humanity (daughter/society) and we (actor/society) get caught in doom spiral, humanity perceivers (plane made it out of the storm/oxygen masks).

Eh. It was New York City and there was a massive amount of people walking in the background and I think that having a high production play shows that society hadn't slipped too far.

>>223700397
Neither. I just think he is opportunistic and is following Digger's philosophy of controlling perception. When he saw the reactions from the audience to the small production of the play, he saw the writing on the wall that his family was the target of great ire. Thus, he sees the opportunity to control the negative perception and make money of it while also enjoying the wealth accumulated by his security company. Which if my theory, >>223700415 , is correct then perhaps he is cultivating hatred for Digger and using the play as an outlet for the masses to express the frustration of the current state of society in order to distract them from the Kenny's "fascist" security company.

Hollywood frequently decried Murdoch + Fox News, then COVID revealed the party lines don't matter when Pentagon/CIA want to spread whatever they ordered. Most MSM are even owned by Juice.

>>223700482
Thiel is linked to Epstein to Rothschilds. They all are. There is no "laundering" if MSM didn't enable it, so once again these satires focus on the outdated "great man theory", when it is the entire 1st~4th estates that act against the common person.

>>223700269

It has a lot of uncomfortable truths, AND many attempts to direct away accountability.
In the context of the play its also Curtis' attempt to bring the character back towards what he wants the portrayal to be: a more realistic, nuanced view of the man that caused a real catastrophe, not just an exaggerated clown.
The idea is that in the world of the real events this speech was televised and much harder to dramatize and stretch the truth.
But when you add in the extra layer of the play being a Rockwell funded production, along with the idea that the entire movie is itself an in-universe piece of propaganda, a dual-sided "Its both based and cope!" take could be seen as the intended effect, a sort of fence-sitting message approved by the powers that be.

I dont know how I feel about the director making such a similar type of movie years later. I liked the movie well enough and as a recent amateur theatre enthusiast it really engaged me, but the movie is super similar to Birdman except I remember Birdman being a bit more focused on the real-life character stuff rather than the play itself.
I did thoroughly enjoy the movie overall though and I'm bummed to see it flop. Comedies really are a no-go these days, huh

the one thing that irked me was the idea that any of the actors would keep their fucking cell phones in their pockets when they go on-stage. ive done theatre and everyone knows thats a big no-no
better yet the idea that his wife would call him KNOWING it's opening night. the bitch could have waited until everything was said and done before stressing him out over his daughter? she even said 'this is your night' earlier in the film only to then proceed to call him back later to deliver nothing but worrying news. very strange.

Kenny does everything he does in the movie to control the narrative about Digger. He hired Tom because he's the only one who actually gets Digger and can bring the real side of him to the screen. In addition that makes him human and understandable which is obviously a huge matter of importance to Kenny. Kenny just like his Uncle is pulling the strings on those around. You either Dig or Die my boy. Kenny was a Digger thru and thru
>>
>>223701009
It's a realistic reflection of actual climate legislation that hopes to offer lip service to actual world changing consequences. The point of the scene is to show how ineffectual, non human (notice the grey and mannequins in Parliament), and devoid of any meaning their government was. Digger's speech is him just peeling back the media portrayal of the world and giving people basic facts. You say you want to preventa disaster, but you demand the cheapest fuel to make society run. These things are incompatible and Digger (deservedly and undeservedly) gets the blame because he's crazy enough to give people what they want and more. Just the same if you actually care and believe in various climate shit we have going on in the real world.

The main reason we don't have other cheap and convenient sources of fuel that cause less climate damage is because big oil spends billions every year throwing money at lawmakers and scientists and propaganda to try to kill their opponents. Digger is literally walking into the parliament and telling them that they are his bitch and they always will be as long as they let him buy their asses instead of growing a spine and doing anything to improve the climate.

Well I finally went to see it. It was a lot funnier than I expected. Except the scene where they're watching Judy hit Europe, that was kinda cringe. But Digger's big speech at the EU was even better than I was led to believe, and then it follows that right after with the scene where Digger and science guy go talk to the president and he's had his vision of how the Earth and his body are magically connected which got the biggest laugh out of me
>I HAVE TO READ?!
>Yes sir, all three books
When they're at the oil rig in the end and Digger prays, I legit wanted the miracle to happen but I knew he was just hallucinating and then when the actors all take a bow there was still genuine catharsis that I rarely get from a movie
And then audience goes outside lol
They really don't make movies like this often

The best part about this movie is it's full of good monologues, but none of them states the thesis of the movie. They orbit the thesis and sort of reveal its center of gravity but they're all coming from individuals whose only concern is what THEY want and what THEY believe.

This is a low bar to clear but 'preachy' movies always get it wrong and make the character seem to be aware they're in a movie with a global opinion. It's great to see it done well for once, especially since the play-within-a-movie gave them an out for being lazy.

I appreciated how the movie addresses this cycle and lets it just sit there instead of pretending it has an answer. Yeah no shit everyone's demanding oil and implicitly justifying Digger's actions. Yeah of course Digger is paying good money to KEEP that demand rising and ensure they don't get wise enough to stop. Yeah governments are gridlocked between enabling Digger while trying to stop him, all while reaping the benefits of the oil. Yeah Digger is corrupting those governments to keep them on the teat. It's all true, just one big snake devouring its tail. This is something we all grasp but I don't see many big movies that embrace the idea that there is no 'solution.'

>>223716248
they would have been better off not revealing anything about the plot and instead making it all about Tom Cruise in this weird role, which they did at first then dropped that
>>
do you think digger will become a cult classic? I do
>>
>>223716666
It already is, Satan
>>
>>223714958

>>
Ben Affleck has joined the side of Digger
>>
>>223716666
no
>>
Not that it needs to be said, but I’ll say it anyway; Digger is the white heterosexual male’s Obsession.
>>
>>223716151
That mixed with Curtis apologizing to the actor who played the Vice President. Movie has stretches of genuine comedy gold in it.
>>
damn bros. all your shilling got to me and i want to see it now. my local theater pulled it though. the next closest one is too far because i dont wanna pay uber 35 bucks for a round trip on top of movie prices

If I can be a actual shill
Aspects of this movie will not translate when watching at home, I mean this in both a spectacle sense (when the soundtrack kicks in for the parliament opening) and one that works in the meta satire of the movie. Your direct involvement as a audience member.
I saw it twice in theaters, once for the kino, and then a second time knowing I probably see it like that again in my life.
>>
>>223717196
probably never*

Digger is a good movie
See it in theaters because that is 100% the way to probably experience it
>>
>>223717196
yeah i know. that doesnt change the situation. can you give me a ride to the theater
>>
>>223691666
I watched this yesterday, it was great, and so obvious why the epstine class killed it at the box office. It fully exposes what they have done to our world.
>>
first film in history to have nature sounds for the end credits. KINO
>>
>>223700397
I think he represents nuance. Bad people are capable of doing good things. He legit respected Curtis and saw some of his uncle in him, so he wanted to help him.
>>223701009
I think its a half truth, and part of the message that we are part of the problem. Sure, Digger is a massive asshole and trying to weasel his way out, but he's not wrong in that we are all hypocrites too.
>>
>>223717277
i'd send you money to get a ride to watch it
we will digg no matter what. drop your cashapp

>first film in history to have nature sounds for the end credits. KINO
I don't think this is true
>>
>>223717778
Well im ignorant so I decided its true, and maybe it is. I dont know.
>>
>>223706900
>Is this the new Don't Look Up?
it is as devastating to the Epstein class as dont look up was, and is being artificially made to fail just like it to
>>
>>223717605
So many great lines, not to mention full-on monologues.
>>
>>223706583
Underrated post

"But they said it wasn't kino...how could it be kino?"
>>
my favorite part was a little detail at the end

you see Elons cyber faggot truck and some open AI androids in a garbage heap, like the people just killed the CEOs and forgot about them and moved on to fixing other stuff.
>>
>>223718052
yeah and John Goodman was wonderful as usual
>>
>>223717196
Good point, felt like when they watched Judy hit Europe, all generals and Ganesh and Goodman in a fucking GOLDEN wheelchair, it was like a mirror to us in the theater watching the movie. Safe while the world burns.

Also why has no one addressed the stage/play aspect of the movie, in regard to the famous quote about world politics and wars (over oil) "The whole world is a stage"?
>>
the set pieces in this movie were fucking beautiful, especially the spinning stages. how derelict they became in fossil fools until you realize their world is also falling apart, the audience is drenched as that fancy theater plemmons bought still isn't enough to withstand the rain and floods, and curtis's dressing room was also leaky. i only watched this movie because i saw yaoi of it on twitter but i'm glad i saw it in theaters. thank you japanese fujos, otherwise the marketing totally missed me other than that ad early on with gorillaz music
>>
>ya either get busy diggin' or ya get busy dyin'
