Reddit movie for midwits
I didn't see it.I'm not planning on seeing it.I just find it funny how the title is one letter away from nigger.
Saw The Social Reckoning and I nearly died of secondhand embarrassment watching that movie. Digger has completely destroyed my ability to watch political films. The only good political movies in existence right now are Digger and The Battle of Algiers.

they buried this movie intentionally because they saw OIL BAD which indeed is one of the points but it's much more layered and sophisticated than thati believe it's the only movie this year that wouldn't give me showtimes when i googled it, i'd have to search for showtimes, and even that small of a roadblock causes less people to go "Oh Hey It's Playing At 8 Let's Go See"

Thoughts on the Digger marketing so far? After the film came out they seemed to pivot into leaning into the divisiveness of the film, encouraging people to see the film and "Decide for themselves" what the truth is, "Same Film. Different Truth.". Now it appears they are straight up revealing the theatre show twist, even showing clips of Tom Cruise yelling at the director that he's an actor and Kenny Rockwell taking to the theater crew, and the sets rotating. All being shown in new ads for the film. Have they completely given up on trying to hide this twist anymore? Feels like the marketing team is throwing literally anything and everything to get people to buy a ticket for this movie now. Trying to hide the twist didn't work, maybe knowing it's about a theater show may actually intrigue some. It's starting to look like Tom Cruise posting less than a minute of the EU Parliament speech on X is actually the social media post about this film that's gaining the most interest by far. Many people replying to the clip by saying, "Oh, ok now I want to watch Digger.".
>>223669900I had a 102 fever last night, and I kept having fever dreams about Digger. It was very abstract stuff about the nature of digging into things. Like "I can dig it"
>>223671577Explain in more detail. Sounds interesting. How was it "abstract"?
>>223671536hard film to advertise, I liked the first wave of ads fine. I had interest in the film but didn't watch until I read on /tv/ how kino it actually is.The cat is out of the bag pretty much on the twist so I think they just are trying to get more butts in seats.I think people compare it to dr. strangelove a lot but I think it's also similar to eyes wide shut or a clockwork orange, the film mocks the elites and shows how they control the narratives in society. A lot of what happens in the film felt eerily close to whats going on in real life today. I truly feel like Cruise and Iñárritu are carrying on Kubricks legacy with this film and it's beautiful. People call it a plebfilter movie. It's like the anti-turn off your brain popcorn flick.
digger nation grows everyday
>>223670341I think the thing that kinologists call "The Digger Inflection Point" only kicks in after about 12 watches.
I don't know what Iñárritu was trying to say with this flick. Does he want people to come up with realistic solutions to climate change that don't involve us going back to the stone age? Or does he want the left to become more radical to stop the evil chuds?
>>223671164Most don't, because giving honest opinions about movies may limit your ability to find work in the future. Ayo Edebiri famously deleted her account with 1K movies logged after getting too big. Anne Hathaway gets to have a Letterboxd due to white privilege.
>>223670501Sorta pissed my digger threads werent included... Can I still join the digger army?
>>223672273I am pretty sure it's a simple man in the mirror message. Make the change to your lifestyle that you want to see in the world
>>223672273I don't know the directors personal life but it seems he wants to save the world from our own destruction.I think the movie mostly isn't directed at the average joe, the ones the film is critiquing is the elites and powerful. If theres a message for us it's to unite against the common enemy. It's a class warfare type movie. If you notice at the end of the film not everyone outside has masks, showing that there is an upper class to the society that gets to benefit from the bread and circuses without doing anything meaningful to fix them.it's anti authoritarian and anti corruption messages are pretty obvious.Diggers speech and his nephews speech feel like the core of the film. Life won't get better until we make meaningful radical changes to do so.The film is pointing to the corporate rot in the political system, actually fixing that rot is a challenge in and of itself.

>>223672871That idea overestimates their fear of the mass. Look at the satanic shit these people says openly in interviews and podcasts. They're not that worried.
>>223672887Yeah Peter Thiel just coming out and saying being evil is good kind of spoils the whole secrecy thing
>>223672887true. it's just nice to see that type of thing in a big movie. we used to have villains like this in media. the big blustering rich guy tropethey were gonna scrap that looney tunes movie for a tax write off, I think the foghorn character was probably based on those types of executives.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AALREbJZEZkDigger really is similar to dr strangelove too in the best ways and I can't stop thinking about the film.it reminds me of the satire of politicians in films like Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, where they are so over the top corrupt that it's comical. Nowadays our politicians are so openly corrupt and incompetent that it makes what would be satire normally just seem like a realistic documentary. How do you parody what is beyond parody? I love the commentary on the place of satire. Even though we're meant to see the play Fossil Fools as kinda hack by the end of the film, as a theatre enjoyer myself I found all those Digger scenes as extremely entertaining. Having symbolic representations to show us the worse behavior of humans is something we always do, to tell the human experience so future people can hopefully do better. So I don't think the end scene was saying "fuck you if you liked the movie" it's pretty dark. working class people write a play about the end of the world and the rights get bought out by the family who ended it. it's a grim bleak world, but it really doesn't feel that too far off from our own. I love digger

>>223674016Don't Look Up is born out of the director's worries that climate change isn't deal with seriously by the media. DIGGER keeps getting BIGGER
This is my first time checking in on /tv/ in a year. I am delighted to see a general has developed for this film. Question for posters in here, did you ever watch/enjoy Eddington?

>>223673077>How do you parody what is beyond parody?Exactly, it's worth thinking about how politicians and billionaires (particularly thinking of people like Musk & Trump) intentionally clipfarm by acting retarded & silly in front of the cameras. Think about when Elon was jumping, belly button out, during the 2024 campaigns. Even today, when Trump says a blatantly unfunny, but yet amusing or retarded joke on stage. Or how he is deliberately taking mini-naps in the Oval Office when the press is there. Or constantly having his staff post AI videos on his truth social accounts. These are deliberate efforts to satirize his image and existence to the masses. They want you to think that they are all "clowns" who "don't know what they're doing". They in fact all know what they're doing. Trump is just an easy example of a corruptician using the jester's excuse, there are many more.

My favorite detail is that diggers nephew transitioned from fossil fuels to surveillance technology. His uncles fuckup had no consequences for him. He still gets to eat tune, have quirky billionaire passion projects, and probably hang out with the president. >>223674016Digger has a scene that is literally intentionally made to be exactly like every scene in Don't Look Up, until the protagonist suddenly forces everyone to stop and then asks "What the fuck are we doing", calling out their whole exaggerated satire of one dimensional stupid evil politicians and referring to it as "cartoon shit". It points out the stupidity and hypocrisy of these condescending movies made by rich people to make fun of rich people while funding rich people.

Ok but for real what's the real reason critics are dogpiling on this movie? Are they resentful of Tom Cruise/Scientology? Do they just want to knock Inarritu down a peg for making such a big swing? Is a rival studio or publicist trying to sabotage the movie for some petty reason? All of the above?

Just got back from it. Not gunna read the thread but if you're shitting on it I just assume you didn't see it or you're too online brained over politics to enjoy probably anything. 10/10Great set design, usage, Parliament scene was absolutely kino. Fake tree / scene break was hilarious Fantastic monologs from everyone who got one from Riz, Tom, Jesse, to SohpieDouble keks at the cat once you put together that it's animatronic because it's in the play and that's just what they do.Ending post the play was also fantastic, robo cop, scared guy in apc, compliance freedom. Great. idk if it happened for anyone else but when the camera finally moves up my theater turned the lights on and did a little 'end of the show' kind of sound where the audio for the movie kicked out, either weird happenstance because we're getting storm weather or slightly 2meta4me.Might be my favorite cruise movie, easily movie of the year. I'd encourage people to see it even if it's basically past it's way out.My only real criticism is the marketing, not the recent 'replying to negative posts' stuff that's been on tiktok but the original trailers just made it hard to establish what it was about except Big Oil, Murika, and satire. That's really not enough, specially when you have essentially two stories going on with the play and what's happening outside of it. Like I would of assume there was going to be more literal drilling. Probably would of done significantly better if they had gone another angle there.

WHAT DID YOU SAY DIGGA
>>223678859>just focusing on the financial aspect is mostly what I've seenNot that it’s exactly the same kind of movie in either content or quality, but most of the Megalopolis coverage was also focused on peripheral stuff like the box office and production instead of its actual merits. In both cases an acclaimed auteur makes a big, bold, ambitious, risky original film and the whole entertainment journalism clique is practically tripping over themselves to smack it down. There’s definitely some weird Hollywood politics going on with this shit.
>>223680997well it's not as harsh as the films criticisms of evil billionaires but the black lady director is helping fund the family that ended the world, and the play itself is a metaphor for bread and circuses. It explores how the media narrative can be controlled and both sides can often serve the same puppetmasters which is blackpilled.I think the end reveal is meant to make us question the media we consume and how it plays a role in our perception. I don't think it's completely doomer, but it's saying we make stories out of tragedy in order for us to cope with how shitty life is. People act like the audience members are cattle for wearing masks, but the pollution and air quality is so bad that they have to. and these are the upper crust of society who can afford to go see a play and have the newest mask. It's implied that there's a police state even to show how bad things get when bad people have unchecked power.I think it's like a wake up call to the normies who engage with politics on a surface level as a form of entertainment. thats what I meant by attacks smug liberals, if that makes sense. the movie questions the purpose of satire itself. It's not aiming for revolution, it's anti complacency, this movie wants to wake you up.
>>223676411the way this film cuts between the play/history of the world and the modern world is so brilliant. and the growing mold to show the effects of what happened in the play to their current world. amazing stuffit knows you wanna see what happened to digger, but cuts away because it wants to show you something else that is actually more important. I haven't seen a film be so bold and full of vision since Kubrick honestly. Kubrick would be proud of Tom for making this film.

>>223681064i really want a documentary or even a wikipedia page made for the "real" rockwell just to see what his actual life was like. the part where cruise is saying they weren't allowed on the same plane was one of the most interesting lines of the movie. if you're not allowed to ride on the same plane as the president you're basically as important as the president.>>223669900really well advertised, i thought it was going to be a dr. strangelove movie the entire time.

I think the nephew character is really interesting. also there isn't a bad performance in this film, everyone is really great.a standout to me is dr. ganesh the climate scientist, he's very funny in the scene where he gets drunk. i also loved john goodman, it's like a spiritual sequel to dr. strangelove but with a meta twist that makes it hit even harder.

>>223678566>real reason critics areCreatively antagonistic cinema criticism died with Roger Ebert, unfortunately.90% (he said rhetorically) of critics today are puppets of the 5 or 6 Massmedia Corporations that control it all. They only want their product enhanced and promoted.Eberts own website is the prime example of this.Right now, that website rogerebert.com, makes no mention whatsoever of the movie Digger, and is front page promoting the movie Musk.
>DIGGER GOT US INTO THIS MESS AND DIGGERS GONNA DIG US OUT AGAIN!
(actual serious post) I just watched It and tried to avoid as many spoilers as possible. My interpretation of the movie was: the people are retarded, and even after everything that happened theres still a Rockwell (todd from breaking bad) on the top who probably still rapes the whole world, and the only thing they care about is the mock-play.
>>223682448Headcanon: This is Eli Gemstone.
>>223682474basically yea. it's implied that diggers nephew runs that universes version of palantirlove u diggers, keep on diggin'if you guys have other film reccs that are similar let me know cause I love this movie. cheers
>>223682201>the music getting all silly and theatrical when dr.ganesh gets drunkthis soundtrack might win an oscar
>>223682474That's pretty much the point. The whole fake movie is propaganda so Digger's nephew can point the finger at le old dead white man and get everyone to DON'T LOOK UP at the drones flying overhead. Hence "Fossil Fools"
>>223676411Well actually, the movie states both he and the director are correct. Satire is important as a way for people to personally feel some sense of control for the terrible things happening to them. And accurate portrayals are important to convey how evil and scary the people causing the disaster are. It just so happens the play leaned more towards the former, but throughout the play Curtis does gradually find moments and ways to convey how evil Digger really was.
>>223680972This kino is so ripe for copypastas
>>223681145>making fun of don't look up?Curtis remarking to the director that satire doesn't mean you have to write total dogshit.>>223682774>>223682984I also loved that the ending of the movie frames him as the hero who found Curtis' daughter only for the last few minutes reminding the viewers again that this guy's family was the reason why everything went to hell for the human population
How old is todd breaking bad character supposed to be in this movie btw? The play itself is 25 years old, they also spend 5 years on the oil rig I think before digger kills himself, but then the dude looks like hes 50 years old. I think either im too retarded or the timelines doesnt match
>>223683378>the dude looks like hes 50 years oldBruv his actor is not even 40 IRL
Disregarding other aspects of the movie (I personally thought it was a 9.5/10), the Cruise UN speech is going to go down as one of the great monologues in film history, in the annuls of Network’s mad as hell monologue and Glengarry Glen Ross’s always be closing. It went hard as fuck.
better than eddington fr fr
>>223683549Cruise obviously mogs Joaquin but Eddington's last act was slightly better for me, I still have that machine gun sequence stuck inside my head

Just watched digger. 6.5/10 I am a stringent rater, so this is pretty high. Not crazy, but I can definitely see it becoming a B tier cult classic.Pretty good movie.Glad Cruise actually got to act for once. Music, Cinematography, and Sets are wonderful. tonally inconsistent, and the messaging is a bit ham fisted (but I guess that's to be expected and fits the story), some fot he jokes are a bit flat. but overall fine. It's like an "Asteroid City" by Wes A. but with worse writing but better characters. I AM affirming to join the Digger nation. I dig it.
>>223677698jesus christ just look at this poster it encapsulates literally everything wrong with hollywood
>>223678566It makes fun of kikes and their corporations so they sent their reviewers to shit on it
Digger is the most honest look at our political reality since Eddington and it is being panned by the same people for the same reasons. The critics need to believe that the hyper-liberal dream of the ever more rational, abstract, right-thinking man will succeed. They need to believe it because they make their living by manufacturing the illusion of its inevitability. The truth the film points to is that our only hope is in action, not representation. Being aware of the right things, consuming the right things, raging at the wrong things, is just doing your part to maintain the farce.
>ctrl+f Eddington>4 resultsOkay, you're clearly trying to SHILL Eddington to me. So just come right out and say it.

>>223680951>idk if it happened for anyone else but when the camera finally moves up my theater turned the lights on and did a little 'end of the show' kind of sound where the audio for the movie kicked out, either weird happenstance because we're getting storm weather or slightly 2meta4me.yeah that happened for me, with the lights going on, the sound playing at it also saying "Level 4" like in the movie, it was kino and a great way to end it

>>223681750>Everything changes, anon.
>>223680951>My only real criticism is the marketing, not the recent 'replying to negative posts' stuff that's been on tiktok but the original trailers just made it hard to establish what it was about except Big Oil, Murika, and satire. They wanted to treat the premise like a twist and keep it secret, but that left them with nothing but TOM CRUISE IS DIGGER. I think they needed to have some hint in the marketing that there was more going on here in order to build actual interest. People seethe when trailers spoil but the decision not to probably cost them 20 mil

How does Digger begin, lads? I missed the first few minutes of the movie, and got in my seat when he starts talking to the cat in bed. What happened before that?
>>223686680Unironically the very first few minutes kinda spoil the twist this is just an elaborate theatrical play since it opens on a literal curtain raiser over Digger's window in his house. After that, it's just him waking up and taking Maggie with him.

The second viewing really shook me upFirst go around was all caught up in the spectacle, how funny it was, swept up in the twists and charm of the entire thing. When I saw it yesterday, once Level 4 hit, i just stayed in my seat. The nuisance in the satire hit harder. Made it feel a lil' bleaker. Ending hit harder. Right afterwards I bought a glass vase to put inside my Digger boot and put flowers in it. Felt appropriate.
So why was John Goodman preserved in the freezer on Digger’s rig at the end? Some kind of commentary on senile politicians or that they’re literally as well as figuratively in the custody of the mega-wealthy oligarchs? Was there a practical in-universe reason for it or did someone just think yeah just throw him in there for a laugh lmao. Were they going to EAT HIM?>>223683545The switch in aspect ratio after he steals that guy’s phone and starts recording himself ruins it for me. Took me out of it even more than the “plot twist” did
>>223683545>WHEN MY GRAN' DADDY STRUCK HIS SHOVEL AND HIT OILLike other anons said, the spinning floor was a insanely great prop. Speech was even better the second time around because you realize it's maybe the only time you really hear the real Digger.
>>223682984I saw it as Curtis trying to say the writing is shit and dishonest. The play was focused on making Digger and the politicians involved look like bumbling fucking morons who were too ignorant and incompetent to manage the crisis they created. But deep down they all know that Digger wasn't an idiot, they just couldn't cope with the reality of his evil and so turned him into something they can laugh and mock."His cat might’ve been his whole life, sure, he was uncultivated, a vulgarian, but he was also composed. It's frightening. A seductive psychopath. He wasn't some kind of clown.""
>critics hate Digger bc it's pretentious moralising slop that placates the masses and makes them feel good about themselves>but actually it's a movie that states to the camera the genre is complete slop and every hollywood """satire""" is bankrolled by the same billionaires raping the earth Digger was based as fuck. Was the 10 cent shovel meant to fire in the last act? There was that story about his grandfather and his brother, and ultimately he had to bury himJust like they shoved the president into that fridgeBut the shovel itself? They were tripping over it when they were leaving his room, but I was waiting for that gun to be fired in the last act
>>223687919>So why was John Goodman preserved in the freezer on Digger’s rig at the end?Maybe people hated him so much that he had to flee to the oil platform with Digger.
>>223687919I think the workers say something like "we had to put him in there", basically implying he was in a cryogenic chamber but got downgraded to a food freezer due to limited power. Nice catch there, that Digger owns the prez's body like a collectable relic is something to notice.

That shit will happen again in the future and the world will become a nightmare to live in. The covid pandemic broke a lot of people forever, imagine if there is another pandemic now. People wouldn't be able to handle another thing like that. So it reminded me to all the insanity lived at the time of the pandemic.
