Just got back from the IMAX (I was like the only person there). Pure kino. I think it might be the best performance of Tom Cruise's career. His monologue was absolutely mesmerizing. Is it this the best sequence of the decade?
>>223720158I would argue best cinematic scene since the Neo bullet dodge. That scene is what the movies were made for and I pity people who don't get to experience it in theaters
>>223720230>>223720158I have no doubt that Cruise put on a show, but the rest of the film sounds like a mess. How bad is it?
>>223720158it's kino
>>223720255The film is the final refutation to all leftist propaganda.
>>223720255So for me the big speech is 11/10 scene you get twice a century. But the rest of the movie isn't bad either, it is just really ambitious and experimental. Overall I think the film is 7.9/10, great performances, great set/art design (I love how all the characters look like walking corpses and the sets are washed out and deteriorating) but I think the writing just doesn't quite weave everything together seamlessly. And is a bit overly ambitious.Still it's one of the most unique movies I've ever seen. Haven't seen something quite like it since the Kubrick era.
>>223720340Really? It seems like it's blissfully unaware of the hypocrisy.
Am I going insane or did anyone else's exit door in the theater open during the credits when the announcer said LEVEL 4
>>223720405How so?
>>223720230I'm still thinking about it right now. I think it's the most spellbinding thing I have ever seen in the theater. Tom Cruise is so fucking charismatic that his performance captured on film has the ability to distort time. I'm not even exaggerating, it's like a return to a pre-enlightenment way of thinking or a metaphysical ritual like rain dances and cave paintings. There is something so profoundly human about his portrayal of Digger. I have never seen/felt/experienced anything like this before. Maybe Daniel Day-Lewis at the end of There Will Be Blood.>>223720255>How bad is it?It's phenomenal. Personally, I think it's my favorite film since Eddington (which was equally polarizing).

Digger is kino, but it's very oppressive. I tried to watch it a second time, but I can't get past how miserable it makes me feel. It's worth seeing either way.

>>223721142>>223721172I read on Wikipedia that innartu shopped it around under the working title "Blah Blah Blah" after the crowds chants in the speech. He started only with the idea for Digger as a character and the speech scene and worked around that. He rewrote the speech 30 times with lots of input from Tom. Thats why the scene stands out so much from the rest of the film

Going to see it again tonight
>>223722043Global warming is anticipated to create new trading routes due to icecaps melting. Presumably, since these waters are now much more navigable, it would also facilitate resource exploration (and extraction) as well.
>>223720482This happened in mine too lol, all the music for the film stopped temporarily and the Level 4 announcement happened via the PA system. I think it's because I saw it in a real IMAX theater. Kinda spooky.
>>223722364That sounds cool as hell. For me in a small basic theater it part was of the movie's audio, just panned to the back to sell the illusion
>>223722043The methane deposits that Dr Ganesh had spoken about
>>223720255Went to see it last night and while I don't see why it needed a bunch of generals I wouldn't call it a mess at all. Everything fits together and makes sense. If anything, the parts of the story that were about making the play should've been more prominent, but I can understand that spending more time in the real world might have diminished the impact of the ending when the audience leaves the theatre and we see what they're living in
>>223722999The methane deposits are a metaphor for Comspon's cancer of the asshole
>>223722206Will this be a new age of sailing?
>director chick accuses Curtis about how the "old generation" did nothing to change things when they could>but when Curtis complains about how the play is being done her only argument is "this is how the play has been done for 30 years"Looks like a text book case of the ironies to me, boys.

Did Digger really hit a homerun as a kid or was that just another bullshit story like the one about the Japanese guy who hand-raises tuna?
>>223723207Nice digging, Anon. Another thing I noticed is that the play "Fossil Fools" essentially serves as a form of catharsis for the audience inside the film. A lot of critics are missing this crucial plot point. The play is funded by a tech surveillance billionaire to placate the people in the theater. There's an entire montage of audience members reacting viscerally to Digger's suicide that essentially robs them of any rebellious impulses to change their horrific Level 4 living conditions. It's amazing to me how nobody seems to understand this.
>>223723070>I don't see why it needed a bunch of generalsIt's because of Digger's monologue. The only thing that comes close this century is Daniel Plainview's milkshake speech.

>>223724216This is why I stick to The Boys and GoT
>>223724216It's a movie about storytelling rather than politics. It takes the unreliable narrator trope to an extreme. The only certainly true element of the metanarrative is Digger's monologue, and how you view him afterwards is more a reflection of yourself than any effort by the filmmakers to guide your thinking in a certain direction. Every other scene in the metanarrative is transparently the product of conjecture and performance. There are characters that have their own political bent but they also oppose each other and the presence of either doesn't equate endorsement by the filmmakers.

It's about how art has been financed and co-opted by tech companies to control public opinion, but you're too stupid to see it. There are the facts, and then there's the story.
I enjoyed the movie a lot more than I thought I would. Tom Cruise was legitimately great. It's a shame the marketing was atrocious and presented it like another climate change doomerism satire. You're driving away most regular people with that before the movie is out.

How did Dr. Ganesh know Maggie had mercury poisoning when Dr. Berg, a fucking vet specializing in cats, didn't even think of it?
>>223720398I agree. The movie tries its best but it's too ambitious and doesn't quite tie everything together. The script is the thing that needs the most work, too many of the twists fall flat because they're not built up enough, e.g the daughter subplot. Network is a shining example of what this movie could have been with a genius script, and I feel like they were intentionally aping it during Cruise's europe monologue.
>>223725447The cat was 30, doc was just treating the symptoms not curing it
La Creatividad... his silence on the movie itself is deafening though
>>223725447Because Digger told him he fed the cat tuna all the time. Ironically, Digger’s whole story about the farm raised Wagyu tuna was probably true, because he loved Maggie and didn’t spare any expense for her. So the tuna probably didn’t cause mercury poisoning. He just told Ganesh afterwards that it was a lie to fuck with him.
>>223725143Probably because the average person watching this movie knows what the fuck amsterdam is and not haarlem you mong, and because as a low lying country half of which has been reclaimed from the sea, they are the euros most currently affected by sea levels anyway
>>223723207Similarly, it took me til my second time Digging to realize that he blah blah blahs Ganesh right before his own big speech
>>223725492>The movie tries its best but it's too ambitious and doesn't quite tie everything together. The script is the thing that needs the most work, too many of the twists fall flat because they're not built up enough, e.g the daughter subplot.Yeah it's never explained why Curtis is so worried about the play in the first place then we get the daughter subplot that doesn't really go anywhere. Outside of Kenny's speech that more or less explains the point of the movie, the "real world" stuff is very underbaked
>>223726185>Yeah it's never explained why Curtis is so worried about the playHe feels like they're making light of something serious and doing it badly on top of that. He's concerned over factual inaccuracies and the fact that after studying actual footage Digger Rockwell (I think he said something like 1500 hours of it) Curtis finds him a deeply disturbing figure and can't square the image he has in his head with the depiction the director wants from him. When he breaks down during the plane scene he pretty much airs out all of his problems, and that leads directly to Kenny's speech, which kind of overshadows it, but I'd say Curtis' problem is that he's got too much integrity?
>>223726185The daughter subplot is to demonstrate the company Kenny works at for the themes of >>223723615 to come through
>>223726228>He feels like they're making light of something serious and doing it badly on top of that.True. I just think the daughter subplot giving Curtis a bigger distraction than his worries about accuracy, seriousness, morality, etc. overshadows what should be the main focus.>>223726236There could have been a better way for Kenny to reveal what kind of company he owns. Hell, it doesn't even really matter once he gives his speech about why he's putting on the play. You're given enough information about him at that point, you know he's powerful and wealthy with ulterior motives
>>223720255The film is not good. It's a heavy handed bashing of anyone who doesn't agree with the climate change narrative with sprinkles of "left wing ideas are also slightly bad and hypocritical guys! See it's actually balanced" while battering you over the head with every trite left wing talking point for the other 2 hours. Anyone who says this is genius for being a meta shot at everyone is genuinely retarded. Cruise was fantastic however as was Goodman. Riz Ahmed literally plays the only brown skinned man in a room of 20 right wing super boomer war mongers, and tell them they are all wrong while one asks "what fucking part of India are you from again,?" In a condescending tone, it's genuinely fucking pathetic. It's okay if a movie is going to be meta, but if it has to resort to tacitly breaking the fourth-wall and directly telling the audience what the point is, it shows that the director and the writers have absolutely no confidence in what they're doing. Which is a shame because it really is a great film, but that one scene really stunk to me.

I didn't get why the minor explosing in Groenland triggered another one in Nova Zembla 1700 miles away, and I'm suspecting some of the climate science in this film. Iceburgs calve all the time. As yet, none have ever been caused by an explosion, whether due to drilling or otherwise. As yet, none have ever drifted close to land. And certainly none have triggered another to calve 2 continents away.
>>223728585They do mention that this is decades later and the methane bubbling up has hit a critical point and created a giant crack.
>>223728687Decades later than what? The Groenland explosion? If it's 2 decades between the iceburgs, and the play's been running 25 years, that means it's been at least 45 years since the initial event, which doesn't make sense. Kenny should be almost 60yo by this point. But again, what kind of crack? A 1700-mile crack along the ocean floor between Gland and Nova Zem? Again, sounds sus. I got it that they explained it, but the explanations don't make sense. There's an underground methane deposit that spans 2 continents?

>>223726236Reposting my theory about the daughter subplot:The daughter missing and the actor worrying about it is a thematic parallel to the play within the movie's world. Despite nature's attempt (hurricane/ice shelfs) to eradicate humanity (daughter/society) and we (actor/society) get caught in doom spiral, humanity perceivers (plane made it out of the storm/oxygen masks).
>>223729798It's simpler than that. Digger talks to Sandy in Greenland who blows up 5 mins later in the play. So Tom Cruise is worried that his daughters plane may have crashed 5 mins after talking to the mom.
>>223724174Did you watch the film? Part of his big monologue basically says everyone knew climate change was real but nobody stopped the people who were actively contributing towards it (people like Digger) because we wanted all the luxuries in life that oil brings us. >>223732832I liked the animated flashback with his villain song. I don't care for joyless fags who called it "out of place," I liked it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9n-D5djkMiI
>>223732805>>223732877Okay now this is turning into the Anvil Hoarder
100% chance Tom gets nominated. 0% chance he wins.
>>223732897>Anvil HoarderI'm sick of seeing this movie brought up whenever I mention Digger in a positive context. Reminds me of when Joker 2019 was big and people would say "But King of Comedy" as if a similar film existing decades ago means I can't enjoy a new one on its own merits.Yes Anvil Hoarder and Digger have commonalities, so fucking what

>>223729798>>223729944It shows how Plemmons character buys off Cruise Godfather style using his power to provide a favor, it shows how rich people ingratiate themselves even if people don't like their business dealings.
>>223733579Also keep in mind Kenny was invading Curtis' privacy by eavesdropping on him and then offfered to use his privacy invasion business to help him lol
>>223733630His agents/service probably alerted him to the contents of the phone call. There's no way that, this long after a global pandemic/catastrophe, phone calls wouldn't be AI scanned for such content, and certainly NOT if you were in the employ of the surveillance company, like the entire play's production was.
there are certainly different forms of eavesdropping and overhearing a conversation

>>223720340How?
I think there was supposed to be a dance sequence in the movie, because at least two different trailers had scenes where Digger dances.
>>223720158Oh man, the old man makeup and silly dancing around was so heckin epic. It was probably the best acting in centuries. The cinematography was just spell-binding, I realized then, that g*d truly has never existed and pinched my fedora tight! Was this possibly the greatest work of art of the past 2000 years? Digger is kinoDon't believe me? see it for yourself!
I haven't seen it and I can't tell if all discussion on this film is a giant shitpost>The entire thing is a play happening in a post apocalyptic world>Doesn't even really take a side politically>Anons are saying it's one if not the best film they've ever seenWhat the fuck is this movie?
>>223735479>Doesn't even really take a side politicallyThe movie does take a more left leaning stand on things but it's also not afraid to call out the left for their mishandling of the situation. While taking a shit on the right
>>223735479>What the fuck is this movie?Kino. Absolute kino.
>>223725838he was feeding his cats out of cans though not fresh tuna
>>223735479I'm not shitting you. I don't even really discuss film on this board that often (because /tv/ sucks ass) but I come here for the Digger threads because the movie is just that fucking good. I forced my whole family to watch it. I'm not even mad when someone calls me a Digger shill because the movie is so good that I feel like yes, everyone should go see it. I've been recommending it to everyone. You don't see many times when 150 million dollars gets spent for a completely original arthouse film that challenges audiences and critics and the establishment. it challenges the art form of film itself. It was worth every penny imo.So yeah normally /tv/ would be extremely critical of a movie and try to tear down, but honestly man, this movie has no bad scenes. it's banger after banger bar after bar. it's pure kino dude. stanley kubrick would be proud. it may sound hyperbolic or ironic but I really think the movie is just THAT good. like people will be discussing this movie for years, not because of its gimmick but because it's an excellent film with a brilliant screenplay and it's a beautiful piece of art.the director worked on the concept for years, masterpieces like this don't come out every year. it's an amazing film
>>223735567Tuna is tuna, canned or fresh there will be mercury.
>>223724421Yeah, it seems like the film's fundamental issue is that it that it looks and sounds like wokeslop but is actually a satirical spin on it, so the only audience it attracted is one that might feel insulted by the message. No surprise it ultimately appealed to no one. What I wonder is if this is a case of a director just wanting to make his movie his way and not giving a fuck if it was marketable or not or if they completely misread the potential audience. You usually don't get a huge star like Cruise to headline a film if your plan is for it to be DOA
>>223735606thats not the argument i was disputing.im saying the tuna farmer story probably IS bullshit, he wasnt feeding his cat the best tuna possible
>>223735649my bad
>>223735640>it seems like the film's fundamental issue is that it that it looks and sounds like wokeslop There isn't a SINGLE FUCKING THING in the marketing that could in anyway even hint that it has the tiniest present of woke in the movie
>>223735666all good anon, at least you admit your mistake. That's rare on 4chanalso nice satanic trips
some things I noticed in the theatre that I didn't get from the camrip>person on the plane is curtis daughter, not his sister.>he has that wife but he has a picture of what looks almost like a different woman and his daughter, so maybe not curtis first wife>digger says he's been in exile for 5 years. and the president dies recently so that means the president survives with anal cancer for 5 years after the events of judy and had to flee with digger.>a fight breaks out outside of the theatre during the credits, you see an armed guard on a tank>swarms of drones fly overhead, showing the police state>theres a pile of ROBOTS among the broken cars, perhaps a war took place so much worldbuilding in the last shot. people are gonna be teaching this film in film schools someday
>>223735649Those tins in his bedside table were obviously not Chicken of the Sea.
>>223735737no im sure it wasnt but it also wasnt fresh farm
>>223735713That last shot alone needs a deep study. Can't wait until the home video release comes out.

>>223735732Why hasn't this been shooped yet
>>223735093Ah-haaa, you'll just have to pay for a full price ticket to find out, anon!
Such a fantastic movie. I was left awestruck when it came to its conclusion, the theatre doors irl opened when "level 4" came up at the end of the play itself and it was just great, I think it's intended because my friend says the same thing happened at his showing. There's honestly so much to say about it and I don't agree with the critics, many of which say the movie makes fun of you and treats you like an "idiot" and beats you over the head with "the point" but Kenny's speech wasn't about that, not really. The audience chanting "jump jump!" while the Digger in the play gets to get off somewhat easily (killing himself but the damage he has done by causing a global catastrophe) when in reality, the real Digger probably lived out his last days in comfort and luxury, is incredibly uncomfortable. A lot of critics seem to interpret this as the audience being made fun of "haha look you are cattle having the wool pulled over your eyes" but it really isn't that, the ending really showcases the irony of them chanting death to Digger, who got off easy while they have to deal and live with the consequences every day.
>>223720158I watched the cam of this scene and can confidently say you are pushing a meme.
>>223735784I watched the movie when it came out, there was me and about five other people in there. I'm calling you out because I'm not seeing what you are seeing
>>223735515It calls the left a bunch of spineless fags with big mouths full of good intentions that then turn around and sell out to big oil. It calls the right a bunch of monsters that rape the environment so hard it causes the end of civilization as we know it. Not hard to see what side it's clearly taking.
>>223735798the speech scene is kino though.
>>223735479to avoid fainting keep repeatingtom cruise is diggertom cruise is diggertom cruise is digger
sup my diggers
>>223735836Yes but the scientist character makes the movie a more left leaning one, everything went to shit by the end of it which is what the left has been saying for a decade now.
>>223735814I'm not the first guy, you just conflated me with him, ah-haaa . . .I'm trying to say that that guy is a literal unpaid shill, trying to trick right-wing guys into buying tickets to a movie because they think it might be "based," ah-haaa . . .
>>223735773The look on the face of the good doctor when he tastes the toro was of the sublime.
>>223720255it's not bad. instead of relying on opinions just watch it and decide for yourself. To me, even people who will hate it should watch it because it will open your eyes to different types of films. I have been disillusioned to art in general because I feel it's being taken over by corporations so Digger felt like the breath of fresh air that reminded me, yeah movies can still be good. You may expect some preachiness about climate change and there is a little bit of that, it comes off as sincere unlike other films like Don't Look Up. The only people who would really hate this film are the grifter sociopaths that the movie is making fun of, or people who get filtered. You'll prob love it to be honest. everyone I know who has seen it has.everyone is good in the movie, shot beautifully in a square aspect ratio. I think if you respect cinema as an art form you owe it to yourself to see digger. critics are being retarded when it comes to this movie but any movie that isn't extremely by the books would trigger them.
>>223730561>Eddington and Civil WarThese are nuanced clever films, especially not because they, allegedly, criticized more than one "side" of an issue.
>>223730122The single biggest contributor to climate change is 3rd worlders moving to the 1st world and increasing their carbon footprint, yet nobody, including the director, who claims to be worried about climate change has sought to stop it. In fact, they encourage it.
>CHINAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>223730987civil war seems to me to actively do everything it can do to not be about contemporary American politics and instead uses a 2nd US civil war as a backdrop to tell a story about the pernicious vicarious nature of war journalism. It's the US civil war to show how they will disconnect themselves from even the "closest to home" violence for their "calling"Hell they dont even tell us if the president is a republican or democrat
I wanna dress up as Digger for Halloween
>>223736121Douse yourself in white dust since the director apparently enjoys that filter
>>223736109I never saw that movie, should I? It has the actor who plays Kenny in it right
>>223736077Typical white man, trying to shift the blame to someone else >No it's never my fault, it's the fault of the jews/blacks/women/chinese/3rd worlders/the worlds fault it's NEVER MY FAULT >In fact, they encourage it.The movie does not and immigration is never bought up in discussions around climate change, it's not encouraged. But what they have been saying for a decade now is that people will be forced to leave their current locations because they wont be able to live there. And say, if 3rd worlders are at fault. Why not spend movie to improve their life so that they dont move? Why not spend money so that they wont be forced to flee but can live in safety of their ancestor land
this is fundamentally an anti-nigger movie, they even call out the play director being a DEI hire
wtf is "vistavision"from what I heard its an old style that includes more of the shot in each frame so less background stuff is out of focusseems cool, idk much about it
>>223736109>Hell they dont even tell us if the president is a republican or democratI think that was the point, that it doesn't really matter who's in charge when things get bad enough >>223736154No they didn't
>>223736143yeah but only in one scene. However many people consider his scene to be the highlight of the film.I think its very good but a lot of people bring their own politics into the film when as i said before i dont think it is trying to say ANYTHING about American politics at all and is more interested in making a statement on modern war and the press that cover it.
>>223736148>Why not give all your white people money to the 3rd worldThis digger serious? You must be 14
>>223736154>I hired you because....someone told me to. They said you were hip or something.
>>223736189>Dexter-flashback.jpg
>warner is billions in debt>tom cruise has a specific contract with digger where he makes money before they do>digger hasn't made back it's budget yet>that means all the money so far is basically just going to tom cruise and not warner bros based cruise dabbing on warner cucks
>>223735447I'm far from miserable. My life is fine. It's just funny when a movie releases that's more ambitious than marvelslop, when people come here making wild claims, especially the claims in the OP. The "reddit cycle" you could call it. At least with The Odyssey very few anons pretended it was particularly good, and those threads were fun for other reasons.
>>223720158I really like how the film subtly forshadows plemmons being Kennyi also really enjoyed when they reveal that how the focus shifts and becomes a POV from the child actor's perspective.
>>223724216>lefty slopanon its literally about a right wing trump like dude saving the day
>>223736229did you watch the movie?
>>223736218Jeej
>>223736189Meth Damon being in this is especially funny considering he almost exclusively does propaganda.
>>223736154oh yeah this movie has barely any niggers in it
>>223736148>And say, if 3rd worlders are at fault. Why not spend movie to improve their life so that they dont move? Why not spend money so that they wont be forced to flee but can live in safety of their ancestor landThe only way to keep thirdies from wanting to move to the first world is if the international welfare program you're proposing was SO effective that their home countries had all the same amenities and conveniences we take for granted, which means industrialization, which means a bigger carbon footprint.Unless the "science" has now determined that factories working, cars driving, etc. magically don't emit "greenhouse gasses" in nonwhite countries.
>>223736229sorry anon. thought you were a bad faith troll poster.I've seen too many people got filtered by it, and it'll get more following over time. I think the film is a masterpiece. The Odyssey is caca. if you think it's good you are really easily impressed ig. I'm a theatre enjoyer so you can see how I'd love Digger and hate The Odyssey a film that butchers a classic play.but yeah, digger is kino. loved seeing it in theatres today.
can you dig it?
>>223736187Well if you dont want them fleeing to escape a disaster where you are the main driving factor then what options are you left with? >>223736313>Unless the "science" has now determined that factories working, cars driving, etc. magically don't emit "greenhouse gasses" in nonwhite countries.Maybe we dont need cars then, maybe focus should be put on public transportation. But why would they need factories?
Digger is the biggest flop of Tom Cruise's career.
He stole the physicality of the character from Chris Farley.
>>223736475and also the most kino!
