I find it very fitting that a sweaty southern-fried horror like TCM is playing in theaters today given it almost hit 90 earlier… holy shit, what a classic! The atmosphere was palpable. I can't believe we're two weeks into October and it's still soooooooo goddamn hot out. Anyways I'm gonna watch the sequel with Stretch tonight.

There was a youtube video a long time ago called "the scariest scene in horror movies" and I only had time to skim the first few minutes before I had to go and do something. I think it was a foreign film (maybe japanese) where a woman is climbing over the front of a couch and the camera is behind the couch and you see the hand coming up over it. Anyone know what movie that was? I've been curious for awhile but haven't been able to find it

Communion is an autobiography about alien abduction that feels a lot like Twin Peaks.
Fraternity of Horror looks like a haunted house movie but it turns out it's an alien in the house movie.
Assignment Terror is about aliens using a werewolf, a vampire, a mummy, and a Frankenstein to take over the world somehow.

I heard that Hereditary was a family drama movie that they changed into a horror movie at the last moment. I don't know if that is true or just a rumor because most of the movie nothing happens and then all of a sudden there's a witch cult at the end.
Either way I don't think I will be excited to watch another A24 movie.

Wouldn't surprise me since Aster has no real interest in horror. Like he listed his top favourite films and the only horrors were Polanski's Repulsion/RB.
>>
Buddy was pretty good, I didn't like how it just sprinted to finish at the end because it decided there wasn't anything left to show the mom then all the other kids dying in really dumb ways one right after the other

I really like the alt-dimension stories so I'm a bit forgiving. I'd say it's kind of a Willy's Wonderland where it's a good watch but overall a bit lacking for a feature length.
>>
>>
>>223740443
Still it at least ended up something horror quality aside. I'm Thinking of Ending Things was toted as horror and critics were all talking about the horror and scary aspects. That movie isn't a horror at all. Someone being sad and a movie being weird and dreamlike isn't fucking horror

Just finished. RSOS #13
I can't believe I never noticed the crazy noise score is BY TOBE. That takes the movie up to an 11/10, the music from this is super influential, and for the director to be responsible is incredibly uncommon. Everything about this is perfect, no notes. Puts you in a different dimension. Love the gratuitous ass shots. The movie is a constant assault for the last 45 minutes. Just imagine being in a room with Leatherface, like without stylized camera shots, just you're in a regular old room with a guy dressed like that holding a running chainsaw, lmao. Makes me look forward to In a Violent Nature 2 for some reason.

Videodrome (1983)
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
>>

Just watched two that were really questionable.

Picrel is about as much horror as The Witchfinder General, which it would make an excellent companion piece for. Lots of minor torture porn but not much else horrific.

Second was Devil's Possessed. it's got
Paul Naschy and a couple sacrifice scenes but otherwise it's just Spanish Robin Hood. (or Throne Of Blood atcmb) Yet tubi tacked a horror tag on it.

Interesting you ask because in the films, the credits only reference her as "Female Cenobite". We get Chatterer, and Pinhead further on but no name for her.

>Chatterer's name is "The Child" (The art book mentions he likes his name as Child and Leviathan prefers this form, which is why Chatterer appears in so many works)
>The Female/Open Throat's name is The Fallen (She gets her name from her former life as a nun)
>Butterball's name is The Cabalist (The art book mentions that he is the most intelligent of the four and the most skilled torturer)

>The worst part of all with the climactic dinner scene was the 110 degree Texas heat, plus the filming lights meant all the food on the table quickly rotted, and the room's poor ventilation made the reek even worse, raising it to genuinely health-threatening levels.
>Filming for 27 straight hours led to several of the actors suffering genuine Sanity Slippage and taking Tobe Hooper's direction as meaning they really were their characters, not exactly the result you want when most of them were playing cannibalistic murderers. (The DVD commentary has Gunnar Hansen eerily recounting how he genuinely wanted to kill Marilyn Burns for a few seconds after being ordered to by his "brother.")
>Edwin Neal, who played the Hitchhiker, said that making the film was more miserable than his service in Vietnam and said that he might kill director Tobe Hooper if he ever saw him again.

I saw one across the street from me when I was walking my dog at 3am. They just slink away and hide behind a tree and stare at me.
The other night I heard a rustling in the bushes anticipating my approach and I got freaked out like someone was there trying to ambush me or something. Then a deer burst out of the bush and sprinted across the street and up a hill at like 30mph it was wild.

Basically all of them are after 2 except for maybe Inferno. I'm not even a big fan of 3 because that was when they tried making Pinhead into a Freddy type slasher character instead of the Cenobites just being Leviathan's enforcers like in the first two films. I really fucking hate that they don't do more interesting explorations of the lore that Barker created and instead just do shitty slasher movies with the name attached. At least the recent game looks like a step in the right direction.

Probably Halloween or Evil Toons.
Evil Toons was something I caught on late night tv when I was in high school and I don't care if people think it's stupid it's from the best timeline. Watching it before and after Carradine died was also really interesting. I forgot about the first scene of the movie when I rewatched as an adult and it was bonkers.
Halloween because Carpenter is a wizard of sound, lighting and mood and it's shot in Pasadena where I grew up and I enjoyed high school even.

watched the Shining recently.
it was a good movie, but it wasn’t scary.
Then I watched Doctor Sleep. same thing, interesting movie, but it wasn’t scary. at least the scene where they murder the little boy was fun.
I have issue with movies labeled “horror movies” that aren’t actually scary. I feel like movies in this genre should be scary, and so many “horror” movies I watch just aren’t.
Recently watched Texas chain saw massacre as well, decent movie, even pretty funny at the end, but scary? not even a little. The chase scene was a bit nerve racking I guess. It was certainly grotesque in the sense that the family were just disgusting, but I was never afraid, never jumped, was never startled.
Do you think horror movies should be scary? I think so. Like, I don’t mind movies that are going for something different, it’s just shouldn’t be labeled “horror”

I guess I should say that a horror movie doesn’t have to be scary if it’s at least “horrifying,” in the sense that it is deeply unsettling, or has some good gore in it, or just a really oppressive atmosphere, but I didn’t really get that feeling with those movies. I guess chain saw massacre had a pretty dark, hopeless atmosphere but I’ve seen better. I guess back then it was innovative for the time
>>
>>223744866

>>
>>223744847
I recently watched Smile 2, Obsession, Undertone, and The Dark and the Wicked, and they all had scary moments, and I’m 33. Movies can absolutely be scary even for an adult if they’re made well, I just feel like so many horror movies don’t even try
>>
>>223744830
On a technical level, how is Texas Chainsaw Massacre “not scary”? Because if you’re going purely based off of your own visceral reaction I’d have to call you a baby for still getting scared at horror movies past your early teens. I’m fine with a horror movie not being scary as long as it’s entertaining, thought-provoking or just fun to watch. I watched Life last night, and I certainly wasn’t scared at any point, but I thought the ending was cool. I think the only sin a horror movie can truly commit is being boring.
>>
>>223744876

It's definitely not a slasher (which is a sub-genre of horror) but okay, thriller. Can you see how it differs from the typical thriller in its tone, structure, and aesthetic?
>>
>>223744889
how can you judge whether or not something is scary in any other way than the reaction you had? there are certainly scary horror films even for an adult, though obviously they don’t hit as hard as they did when we were kids.
>>
>>223744928
>when we were kids.
the ceti eels in Wrath of Khan as a kid were scarier than the scariest horror movie is to me now
>>
>>223744923

>>
>>223744928
That’s literally why I asked you to explain your technical qualifications on what counts as scary. I’d say that a movie’s ability to build suspense and tension, the quality of its effects, the tone of the acting and the writing, hell even the actual composition of the shots all contribute to whether something could count as “scary”, even if I’m not personally scared.
>>
>>223744830
Why should you be the arbiter of what’s scary? I’m 44 and am not prone to being scared by very much anymore but I understand intention. Horror doesn’t necessarily mean scary anyway but a certain form of horrific.
>>
>>223745035
Tbh I put it on and turned it off pretty quickly, the acting was really annoying. I might try it again at some point and just pay less attention
>>
>>223745042
you’re just describing the technical aspects of a film that can lead to it being scary, but whether or not it is actually scary is purely a visceral reaction to what you’re experiencing. I’d say that a decently scary movie physically startles you and makes you almost want to look away because you’ve been burned and now you’re anticipating another drop that will startle you again. What you’re describing is more just the building of an oppressive atmosphere.
>>
>>223745035

I'd say most vampire movies (with exceptions for stuff like twilight) are in the horror genre, even if they aren't scary. Same goes for a bunch of monster movies
>>
>>223745079
it definitely doesn’t have excessive gore lol
I was actually disappointed in that respect, I’m a huge fan of gore and with a title like “chainsaw massacre” you’re really expecting some brutal mutilation with a chainsaw and you just don’t get that
>>
>>223745068
I will never understand paying for a movie and not watching it
>>223745077
are you underage or something? what kind of theater chain turns away a horror movie? It’s like the one consistently profitable genre lol
>>
>>223745076
Are you a little girl or something? Horror and comedy play off of the same premise, there’s a setup and a punchline to a scare. I’d say that the scene in Texas Chainsaw where the teens get hung on meat hooks and gutted is scary, same with the final girl “eating dinner” with the cannibals towards the end. You don’t need to feel the fear to appreciate it. Intruder and Death Spa are both great horror movies that aren’t scary, but they happen to be creative because they use their environments well.

I wouldn’t describe those scenes are scary, just a bit gross and unsettling. Scary is something that makes you jump in your seat, something that raises your heart rate, something that trains you to be afraid of what’s going to happen next because it might startle you again. I get that even in my 30s with some movies, others just go more for the dark atmospheric vibes and such and I guess that’s technically horror but it’s disappointing to me after having experienced other movies which actually had me jumping

Idk what to tell you, it sounds edgy to say that I genuinely don’t really get that rush like I used to. I like horror from a technical and storytelling aspect, I like the morbid and bizarre.

it has the best jump scare of all time, so horror people talk about it a lot.
you know how fucking hardcore it is to tell the audience directly they're about to get jumpscared, then make the scene nothing but waiting for the jumpscare, and still have it fucking work? Lynch was incredible.

don't do these in October, Lynch is too important. Take your time with his catalog.

good idea... I think I am going to watch one of them though. I've seen fire walk with me and all of twin peaks twice before. Thinking about Lost Highway.

Non one who thinks horror movies are supposed to be scary is going to make more than three posts on /hor/ anyway before they get bored and impatient and leave forever. People who make the post he did are like people who join private torrent trackers, nuke their ratio in three days, then never come back. Plus they waste them on movies that are on youtube, lel.
No, he doesn't belong here.
