Watched ep 1 of-An 8-part "remake" of a 1960s Japanese sci-fi thriller movie. Really hoping that I stick with it because the show is visually good-looking (same VFX team as Godzilla -1) and I love a good science gone mad revenge story. I honestly forgot this existed because Netflix is the streaming platform where surprisingly quality shows and mini-series go to languish in obscurity.

Solid for a low budget first outing, this is kinda what I want to see more out of Japanese horror and less of the "playing it straight" stuff, plus there's not alot of talking too (the entire script fits on a sheet of college rule paper probably) So if you're a Non-Jap speaker like myself youll get a good kick out of it. >>223797173Glad you liked it, anon. Shinya Tsukamoto's one of my favorite, current Japanese directors. His career trajectory is very similar to David Cronenberg: Making low-budget body horror early in his career, and progressing into more sophisticated themes, but still with an underlying current of body horror and psychosexual themes to his work. Definitely check out Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, which trades out the 80's splatterpunk vibes of the first one for 90's Industrial vibes. Hiruko the Goblin is also really fun, though I think Tsukamoto doesn't think too highly of it since it was his one attempt at making a mainstream, crowd-pleasing film and it bombed in Japan.Speaking of 90's industrial vibes, he did collab with Trent Reznor/NiN on an MTV station ID, and designed a Nine Inch Nails tour.https://youtu.be/ev6_XmtaTVc?is=6Sm35BZ99rUGMqzk

Just finished. RSOS #16One of the most race-baitingest movies ever. I think Jordan Peele tried to write a movie about generational trauma stemming from mob violence, but accidentally wrote a movie about how much remakes suck. Which means that there are two remakes about how much remakes suck starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen, weird. And they both suck. Buffaloed myself because they were showing the original AND the remake today and I screwed up my itinerary. Also saw You Can See Everything (overlong and overrated), Street Fighter (kino for 10 year olds) and Digger (overly self-satisfied but very funny.)

Was an ultra spooky moon out, clouds moving over the top of it as it peered through. It's put me in such an October mood, I'm going to watch Sleepy Hollow.
>>223798334>>223798363that is not even the first japanese>man finds a girl in a sewermovie i've heard of or seen
>>223798457>A fear-obsessed freelance cameraman investigates an urban legend involving mysterious spirits that haunt the subways of Tokyo.
>>223798438Careful not to lose your head, Anon
>>223798499Ho9w many J-horror movies don't involve angry spirits or creepy spiritual supernatural deities, and how many of them are good.
>>223798512they have some great spooky folklore creature shit but they're not all that. they are almost all very good at building suspense but 0% of japanese horror movies have a decent ending. every single one of them fucks it up. hard to rate good on that scale.
>>223798499Marebito kino. I always remember that as a Tsukamoto film although he didn't direct/write it. But looking it up I now realise that Chiaki Konaka (Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze) co-wrote it, cool.
>>223798533>hey have some great spooky folklore creature shit but they're not all thatspeaking of which, has anyone seen the Ao Oni live action movie, I remember back in the oldfag days the RPGM game making the rounds on /v/, but I never knew if the live action movie was good.
>>223798512I really like Nobuhiko Obayashi's 'Cute Devil', a TV movie from the early 80's about an evil little girl, very giallo-inspired. Whole movie is on YouTube.https://youtu.be/iSsKNocItHk?is=o36BMw25__cH5B16
I cannot fucking believe how good Alien looks for a movie from 1979. There’s nothing being made today that even comes remotely close to looking as good. It’s like looking into a lost civilization, we simply forgot how to make anything look that good and it can’t be technically replicated.
>>223798611practical effects are timeless
>>223798601>Killer little girl slasher trope but JapaneseOk I'll watch it, It wont be Tetsuo levels of good which I was just exposed to but Im game.>>223798611The inside of the Alien (Engineers now I guess lol) ship was literally one of the best renditions of a HR Giger painting IRL.
>>223798611Not shooting on film anymore has really fucked over the art of filmmaking, digital doesn't have nearly the tonal nuance or light sensitivity for cinematography that celluloid does. I was watching a shitty 90's movie like Double Dragon and marvelling at how good it looks compared to $100 million+ movies being made now.
>>223798611>we simply forgot how to make anything look that goodwhat gets to me is that low budget films back then looked great too
>>223798601>whole movie is on youtubeand soon it shall be on my hard drive, thank you
>>223798629to be fair going from black and white to color film also irreparably fucked cinematography
>>223798611The dichotomy between the Nostramos ship design and the Xenomorph design is really nice and well thought out. It all looks believable.
>>223798611That's what gets me about so many throwaway teen horror slashers of the 90s and 2000s, they look so much more 'cinematic' for lack of a better term due to being shot on film and/or featuring as simple a distinction as traditional lighting techniques.
>>223798629Analog video in general looks amazing when its not being raped by its own shortcomings (grain, fuzz, chromatic aberration and blur) even then, it still looks better than a digital film with those artifacts.
i'm drunk as shirt watching thing
>>223798512Non supernatural horror (as in not traditional Japanese ghost story stuff) in Japan like slashers and more Western style horror movies suffered a big blow after the reveal that serial child murderer Tsutomu Miyazaki was an avid horror fan and collected slashers specifically. A bunch of horror movies were canceled or re-worked overnight to avoid controversy, even horror movie magazine V-Zone folded due to fears of backlash.
>>223798699that's a good drunk pick
>>223798711>Miyazaki was dubbed the "Otaku Murderer" due to his extensive collection of anime, manga, horror videotapes and hentai as well as various other forms of pornography. This triggered a widespread moral panic against otaku in Japan, similar to the Satanic Panic in AmericaAlright, I'm def looking up a documentary on this dude or something. Very funny how Japan had their own pop media fueled scare that we had here with horror movies, metal and later vidya.

I’m watching AHS: Delicate and I’m surprised by the fact that Kim Kardashian is a decent actress; I’d like to see her in other horror projects
>>223794633It's funny to me that back then 47-year-old Tom Atkins could get in bed with 23-year-old Stacey Nelkin and no one even batted an eye. Those were the good ol' days.
>>223794712>prolonged up-close shot of actress's butt>explodes her head in comedic fashion 1 minute laterWhat a solid flick.
Army of Darkness is a lot of fun, but I prefer the original ending instead of the happy one they gave us
Just threw on this random Aussie movie.
This was a bit overrated. It wasn't bad, but I expected better from a Cronenberg film with James Woods as the star.It was just weird, and I'm not a fan of "how do you know whats really real" films yo begin with.Definitely wasn't scary. Also a vagina chest.
>>223794787Ive seen that.I saw it after I heard a song about it.https://youtu.be/uCCkGagObX8?is=PYuQDWl55gU99jDA
>>223799159Fucking badass visuals with a near incomprehensible plot, either that or I was too busy staring at the visuals to keep up, either way it gave me the same experience as watching a Lynch movie or Lain.
>>223799138Off to a pretty good start so far.>>223799159>This was a bit overrated.Damn, I was worried it might be>Also a vagina chest.I still plan on watching it, though

>>223799185Exactly, the whole time I'm watching it, I'm thinking this reminds me of Lain, or the internet makes more sense and is far more consuming and threatening than tv/cable.It is odd in retrospect how between the 80s and 90s movies and people thought TV, Cable, and video games were consuming everyone's life and would destroy us, only for the Internet to be 100 times worse. With 2-4billion people connected to the internet now, smart phones having the internet in everyone's pocket, very little need to make connections in your area when you can find the nichest of the niche that completely agree and think like you 24/7 a few clicks and taps, no repercussions for anything, and; far worse than cable and video games, all the porn, violence, death, and obscene you could ever want.I mean people really really thought and acted like cable and video games would destroy America and society, but the internet blew it out of the water and was unfathomable, all in 30 years. And yet, there could be something even consuming and worse to come. The invention and idea of the internet as it is today and has been since 2003 was completely not predictable. What new thing hasn't been thought of but could replace the internet in our daily lives?

Really ahead of its time back when when BDSM and exploitation films were the worst TV had to offer atm seems very tame today, much like the film in the Ludovico Technique scene in Clockwork Orange.
