Watched ep 1 of-
An 8-part "remake" of a 1960s Japanese sci-fi thriller movie.
Really hoping that I stick with it because the show is visually good-looking (same VFX team as Godzilla -1) and I love a good science gone mad revenge story. I honestly forgot this existed because Netflix is the streaming platform where surprisingly quality shows and mini-series go to languish in obscurity.

OP here to that thread, and wow, it's actually really good, its a psychotic metal-laden body horror mess of a dream put onto video but its a good one, its essentially Eraserhead + The Fly and unlike other Japanese horror films which bank on the spiritual paranormal afterlife stuff, it taps into a surrealist body horror nightmare the industrial OST adds alot to it.

Solid for a low budget first outing, this is kinda what I want to see more out of Japanese horror and less of the "playing it straight" stuff, plus there's not alot of talking too (the entire script fits on a sheet of college rule paper probably) So if you're a Non-Jap speaker like myself youll get a good kick out of it. I'll def be checking out more stuff by this guy.

Glad you liked it, anon. Shinya Tsukamoto's one of my favorite, current Japanese directors. His career trajectory is very similar to David Cronenberg: Making low-budget body horror early in his career, and progressing into more sophisticated themes, but still with an underlying current of body horror and psychosexual themes to his work. Definitely check out Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, which trades out the 80's splatterpunk vibes of the first one for 90's Industrial vibes. Hiruko the Goblin is also really fun, though I think Tsukamoto doesn't think too highly of it since it was his one attempt at making a mainstream, crowd-pleasing film and it bombed in Japan.
Speaking of 90's industrial vibes, he did collab with Trent Reznor/NiN on an MTV station ID, and designed a Nine Inch Nails tour.

Just finished. RSOS #16
One of the most race-baitingest movies ever. I think Jordan Peele tried to write a movie about generational trauma stemming from mob violence, but accidentally wrote a movie about how much remakes suck. Which means that there are two remakes about how much remakes suck starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen, weird. And they both suck. Buffaloed myself because they were showing the original AND the remake today and I screwed up my itinerary. Also saw You Can See Everything (overlong and overrated), Street Fighter (kino for 10 year olds) and Digger (overly self-satisfied but very funny.)

I just fucking hated it because they sidelined Tony Todd for this shit, and now he's gone. This could've been a beautiful last note for him to exit on, and he's in it for all of 10 seconds. One of the GOAT horror legends relegated to a glorified cameo in his own fucking franchise.

There seems to be a lot of disagreement about what the hell it is ghosts even think they're doing, so I'm pretty forgiving about erratic ghost behavior in movies

>Alien Abduction
My friend told me about this as a 10 year old. I don't know how he saw it since we're in Canada he must have caught it on a UHF channel from across the lake. He believed it was real and we were X-Files, Beyond Belief loving type of kids so in my mind it was this mythical thing like a one time real news broadcast on some random far away station late at night. This was all around the time of the Blair Witch hype too and it stuck with me forever even though me and that friend have long since sadly parted wayshey geordi hope you're doing well in case you happen to see this post. I remember trying to google it for years back in the caveman google days and eventually found it on wikipedia or possibly some ancient bespoke horror fan webpage and realized it was fake. It interests me but to this day I've never bothered watching it.

I cannot fucking believe how good Alien looks for a movie from 1979. There’s nothing being made today that even comes remotely close to looking as good. It’s like looking into a lost civilization, we simply forgot how to make anything look that good and it can’t be technically replicated.

Not shooting on film anymore has really fucked over the art of filmmaking, digital doesn't have nearly the tonal nuance or light sensitivity for cinematography that celluloid does. That's what gets me about so many throwaway teen horror slashers of the 90s and 2000s, they look so much more 'cinematic' for lack of a better term due to being shot on film and/or featuring as simple a distinction as traditional lighting techniques.

Non supernatural horror (as in not traditional Japanese ghost story stuff) in Japan like slashers and more Western style horror movies suffered a big blow after the reveal that serial child murderer Tsutomu Miyazaki was an avid horror fan and collected slashers specifically. Exactly, the whole time I'm watching it, I'm thinking this reminds me of Lain, or the internet makes more sense and is far more consuming and threatening than tv/cable.

It is odd in retrospect how between the 80s and 90s movies and people thought TV, Cable, and video games were consuming everyone's life and would destroy us, only for the Internet to be 100 times worse.
With 2-4billion people connected to the internet now, smart phones having the internet in everyone's pocket, very little need to make connections in your area when you can find the nichest of the niche that completely agree and think like you 24/7 a few clicks and taps, no repercussions for anything, and; far worse than cable and video games, all the porn, violence, death, and obscene you could ever want.

I mean people really really thought and acted like cable and video games would destroy America and society, but the internet blew it out of the water and was unfathomable, all in 30 years.

And yet, there could be something even consuming and worse to come.
The invention and idea of the internet as it is today and has been since 2003 was completely not predictable.
What new thing hasn't been thought of but could replace the internet in our daily lives?

That was my thinking as well personally, had it been written and scripted and filmed in the wild west era of the internet (where fucktons of uncensored gore and porn ran rampant) I feel like it could've been a more intense movie. Really ahead of its time back when when BDSM and exploitation films were the worst TV had to offer atm seems very tame today, much like the film in the Ludovico Technique scene in Clockwork Orange.
