Watched Infirmary last night, wanted to like it a lot more than I did. acting and script were a bit choppy, spooks weren't really there and the story could've been better. Best parts of it were slowly exploring the creepy hospital, phenomenal location that was wasted on mannequin(s)??? that we barely see one of?. Overall just made me want to watch Last Shift again because it's basically this movie but better

There's not really any good direct adaptations but some of the better movies inspired by HPL are:
>Reanimator (technically a direct adapt. but based on a story that Lovecraft basically wrote for money with none of his normal themes)
>In the Mouth Of Madness
>The Beyond (any Fulci gates of hell movie actually)
>>
>>223836536
>There's not really any good direct adaptations
Yes, there are: "The Call of Cthulhu" and "The Whisperer in the Dark" are direct 1:1 adaptations of Lovecraft's stories.

absolutely. if you go into the series you need to understand that the first one was the only to be released in theatres (besides the remake but that doesn't count), and is a proper horror movie. The rest are all direct to dvd with widely varying levels of quality. 3 and 5 are student film levels in my opinion. but if you're in the mood for fun kills, cannibals, and incest then you can't go wrong

Horror directed by WOMEN?!
I suffered this until I got to the Japanese directed one It's about a psychopath seeking penance for her tendency of killing animals as a coping mechanic for stress since childhood. Escalating from caterpillars to cats until she had a baby and the priest she was confessing to talked her out of killing it after the father ran out on her
The film makes the worst first impression with the "Wall Udders" short but I honestly gave it a chance and valued my time over the completion status.

Also watched The Hem, well-produced found footage flick, isn't scary in the slightest.

Been watching pic related. I'm reserving complete judgment until I've seen the whole thing, so I'm not trying to be excessively negative, but there's a few issues that I've got.

>I don't know how I feel about the sci-fi Stranger Things explanation for Jason, but I guess it's still better than demon worms and magic daggers
>The show wastes a lot of time of pointless subplots, like the self-help guru or Jason's friend having an abusive mom
>The chief's sister is the "modernity" character who bitches about white people at least three times within her first scene
>The group of hunters who have presumably been hunting for decades of course have to be a bunch of stock bumbling "bubba redneck" retards. I'm genuinely shocked the showed enough to not have one of them say "nigger" at the chief during his "Boss Nigga" moment at the gas station
>I can't begin to describe how stupid I find it that the chief is keeping rotting human remains in his refrigerator next to his leftovers.

I have seen Alien Earth, and what I will say is that I don't find Crystal Lake anywhere near as offensively bad as that piece of trash was.

Eh its fine, not amazing, but yes there's a lot of what you mentioned considering its one of the few things that King had written in the book that had some conflict in the past lore of the town in the book. Cool thing is the black guy at one point kinda stands up for the white guys on his military base who are bullying him for being black and serving (he knew they weren't lynching him but that was something in the story that kinda needed to happen). Yes the black spot does burn down, yes everyone pins it on the white guys and not the clown.

>I have seen Alien Earth, and what I will say is that I don't find Crystal Lake anywhere near as offensively bad as that piece of trash was.
Alien Earth was bad, Episode 1 was good then it just falls off a cliff. Once the Android girl single handedly kills a Xeno off screen I turned that shit off fast.

I can't say much about Crystal Lake but Chucky is probably the best attempt at a horror franchise to serial TV show format, in part because it's an actual sequel to Cult of Chucky and canonized everything within the franchise except for the Child's Play remake. Also, it's self-aware of its cheesiness and doesn't try to be anything other than a typical entry but stretched out to multiple episodes.
Too woke for /hor/ because two of the main characters are fags, with one being a black fag.

I didn't even really like the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie either, which is why I was excited to hear the sequel was so different. 2 was more cinematic, but there was just too much hooting and hollering and the scenes felt like they stretched on for way too long.

I have a schizo head-canon that most of the Italian zombie movies are really presenting the perspective of the losers of a revolution or civil war at the stage events where they can basically be lynched with impunity. I think this developed due to the fact Italy was a 'terrorized' society (from crime, terrorism, serial killers) in that era and because of voodoo zombi's and slavery connection echoed in Zombi 2.

I remember reading an interview with the director of that one and it was amusing to see his favorite films were from directors like Jacques Tati and Bergman and his favorite writers were Voltaire and Proust. not saying those things make you a great director or even that Burial Ground is some masterpiece but it seems like you regularly run into the case where even schlock directors of yesteryear had a certain degree of cultural sophistication that put them worlds apart from your modern horror nerd stuck regurgitating decades-old B movies because that's all he's ever engaged with (but at the same time not falling into the trap of "elevated" horror)

Fear Street part 1 is a surprisingly solid, meat and potatoes slasher film. You would think that since it's based on a YA series of novels that it would be a harder PG-13 but no, it's definitively R-rated. No nudity, of course but the level of gore is like a half step below the nuEvil Dead movies. There's a scene with a bread slicer that is pretty brutal, also based on the preview the next entry will have full-on fucking.
Funny how R.L Stine wrote a lot of low-brow schlock but he gets better modern adaptations of his work than Stephen King.
