give me your favorite fassbinder film, especially if it's underrated/underappreciated in your opinion
>>223856362>Steve Alpert: Yeah, he usually doesn't even watch the dubbed versions of his films. But the one he did watch was "Howl's Moving Castle." And the reason he did [laughs] was because we had a screening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the legendary actress Lauren Bacall, who voiced a role, was going to attend.>Miyazaki said, "The Lauren Bacall will be there? I'm going!" He sat next to her through the entire film. She flirted with him and held his hand. Afterward, he said he loved the dub. He was very happy.

>>223858302I thought it was supposed to be bad?
30 minutes in and so far it's mostly disgusting closeups of naked mexican people having sex and some weird gore shit. At a certain point two red ellipses appeared on the screen and then the camera panned into them and it transitioned into the next scene through them. This just feels like Reygadas discovered AfterEffects. Also this film has the same image refraction effect as Post Tenebras Lux.
>>223858309Do you have Llinás' Biografía de Jorge Luis Borges? I'll Venmo you 1000 Argentine pesos ;)
>>223858401The opinions of anyone who posts during a film are to be disregarded.
Camera just panned into a man's hairy ass, the shot transitioned into colonoscopy footage and then into a Brakhage-like montage of space imagery.I'm turning this cringe hack fraud shit off, isn't this nigger pushing 60? This is some garbage an edgy 16 year old letterboxd user would come up with when imagining a "transgressive" movie.

Criterion is literally just a boutique label. They aren't the ones responsible for the restorations. The same is true for any other group like Arrow, KL, Vinegar Syndrome, etc. But I guess they're an easy target to pick on when you're terminally online and bitter at life and need an outlet.
Cohen Media Group does very good restorations but of course, they only touch up classics. As they should.

I don't check to see what films are on PirateBay so I can't tell you exactly what I download from KG that isn't on public trackers.I can just tell you that I've found a lot of great films thanks to KG and PTP. You don't have to tell me the big secret if you don't want to. If you're afraid of seeing these films scrutinized by the masses, you know deep down they aren't up to par.
Yeah actually, if shit isn't know by at least a 100 people, it's probably not that good. The amount of obscure films I've watched which are 8/10 plus amounts to like 5% of the obscure films I watch.

>When Mario Bava returned to work [after his big success with Black Sunday], he did so gingerly, bringing with him some of the comforts of home. Upon arriving on-set, he now changed from his regular shoes into a more comfortable pair of slippers. He was also frequently accompanied by the great passion of his home life—a pet basset hound, named Centi—short for Centingar Clelium, a bewildering moniker which no one in Bava’s family understood or is able to explain. Centi went everywhere with his doting master, whose great pleasure was to pamper him like a baby, ordering special dishes for him in restaurants and making a comic show of feeding him, while amusing onlookers by comparing the animal’s sad visage to his own.

Oh wow, I'm surprised Armond is giving this a glowing review. It was getting raves from all the usual suspects, isn't particularly obscure like all the random gay arthouse movies he likes, and I assumed he will shit on it like any other liberal themed documentary but no. It must genuinely be THAT good if even Armond won't budge to the NR demands to shit on it for conservaturd points.
He is definitely going to shit on You Can See Everything tho, but it won't matter cause /tv/ forgot about their nigga. The board is kinda dead, most of it seems to be corny and tryhard Xitter shit, likely paid shills, Elonny definitely pays mods to allow Xitter screencap threads and populate them with shills. I watched Akira Kurosawa's Dreams for the first time pretty recently. I was surprised that the main reoccurring theme is about types anxiety and loss, but I found that really interesting. Just a beautiful piece of an audiovisual work of art in every way, and i say this as someone who usually does not care for animation or sci-fi.

Although we've come to the end of the road, still, I can't let go
I had a dream where the true nature of cinema was revealed to me. I can't even begin to describe the journey I took through different dimensions and planes of existence beyond human imagination. What I can describe is how everything originates from a cosmic interdimensional toilet filled with the most disgusting feces you can think of, and G-d doing the shitting. I'm not kidding.

RIP Ryu Murakami I'll be rewatching Audition in his honor
>>223888288I'm more interested in Queen at Sea which is also out.>>223889935Hardcore RIP. I had a curious story about Burning and the Murakami story it's based on but I kinda have to self doxx somewhat to tell it so alas.
>>223890927Tell the fucking story anon Burning both the short story and the film were obsessions of mine several years ago.
>>223890927yea, stop being a bashful nymph and tell us already!
>>223890971>>223890999It feel like it might be disappointing. I'm a hohol, I've mentioned being Ukrainian before in these threads, and what I didn't tell is that I'm originally from the eastern part, from Donetsk specifically. I was living under the DPR for a while, in 2018 when Burning dropped on torrents I watched it and then while going home from a tekhnikum I was very surprised to see an advertisement on a library which said they will be discussing the movie Burning the next day and that the entry is free, the movie wasn't playing in theatres obviously and it was weird obscure arthouse basically for most, I was nervous but decided to go, it turned out that it was actually a discussion of the short story and the movie in context of the story; there was a librarian old lady who I told that I didn't read the story and at the time I didn't even realize the movie was based on one, and she said it's okay and gave me the story printed out and I basically read the whole thing in 30 minutes before the discussion started. The discussion was neat and curious experience and particularly surreal was seeing an orthodox priest in whole garb being one of the people who came to discuss the movie and the story. And he actually liked the movie too, although found the masturbation scene unnecessarily lol. Idk if this is particularly interesting to anyone but for me it was a memorable experience, especially in the context of me not expecting something like this happening where I lived at the time as the cultural exports were regular normalfag shit or Russian, and I was surprised to see all these articulated and nice boomers, including an actual orthodox priest, who weren't a uptight, prudish, low culture. While there were plenty of people who didn't like the occupation, like my family, lot of them fled might earlier and I was mostly used to seeing monarcho-comunist schizo boomers. Who I guess were sometimes curious and entertaining in their own way
It's basically a blogpost, I really shouldn't have said anything, now I feel stupid.
>>223891217Thx for sharing This would never happen in America where at my screening I just saw a plump but sort of cute American girl get really grossed out and wince and turn her head to the side and gag during the cigarette spitting in the cup scene. This stuff just doesn't happen here. So it's really cool to see or I mean to hear about this happening in another country, especially one that you would not expect to be so open to the Asian art house circuit. So yeah, you know, thanks for sharing that. That's really cool. The people I saw the movie with didn't get it at all. They, uh, the thing about America is that everyone is borderline retarded. So during that same time frame, I think everyone was praising the shit out of that Alfonso movie called Roma, which is basically just surveillance footage in black and white, although the ending is pretty good. But I digress because Burning and even the short story, I wanted to get into the short story as one of the greatest endings in fiction that I have read in such a long time.
>>223891217>>223891326Or what I will have to say that I used to attend the art house independent circuits for quite a while around like the 2015, I guess 2016 era to like pandemic pretty much. And the art was always boomers that showed up to these things. But you know the thing about the boomers is that they can be based. Not all of them are. Most of them aren't. But a lot of them can be based and they were keeping these old art house things alive. They were keeping the classics alive because I was, you know, the only young boomer there. And there might have been some Gen X, but I was definitely the youngest by a country fucking mile, my friends. So what I'm saying is that, yeah, I can see someone like an Orthodox priest, you know, showing up to something like Burning Man, which is pretty transcendent in its own way. I mean even Paul Schrader has commented on how it is the same transcendental style as like Ozu and Bresson and all of those guys. And so yeah, you know, the boomers were the ones keeping this shit alive. But once they die, it's going to go into the hands of the Zoomers and the millennials. And now you know how that goes and so on and so forth

>>223883074Yeah, I know he attempted suicide. But his other films don't really necessarily reflect that (at least, as far as I can tell). The fact that Dreams appears to be semi-autobiographical is something that I like about it.
