Noroi edition

Just watched Body Bags.
Kinda middling stuff compared to the highs of Carpenter and Hooper, but a pretty enjoyable watch. The middle segment with the hair growth had a great start, but really fizzled out at the end when the reveal happens and it's just over.
Apparently this was supposed to be a series meant to rival Tales From the Crypt, but Showtime suddenly cut them off and the filmed episodes had to be repackaged into an anthology film. I wonder how long John Carpenter could've lasted having to deal with makeup to play the undead coroner before bailing if the series had actually been picked up.
>>
>>223864758
Noroi was stupid as hell
>>
>>223864824
It's easily the worst movie this general has recommend to me.
The final reveal was laughable, and the psychic was one of the most obnoxious characters I've ever seen in a movie.
>>
>>223864824
I really liked it but the crazy dude is going to put a LOT of people off, and it doesn't help that he's integral to the ending. But I could overlook these things. Good movie. Love docuhorror.

I have to rewatch this. I've seen a lot of Kojis stuff since then and Occult is my favorite.

what a disappointing movie. i get that you don't really need an explanation for why what's happening is happening, but some cards in a skull is kinda just dumb. most of the maniacs have really basic/stupid designs and the ones that look cool barely get screentime. (the reaper looking maniac towards the end for example) plus an overwhelming number of kills are just lame with the barest minimum of practical effects needed. what was even the point of the water guns in the 3rd act if no one even used them, including the main characters who knew that they worked against the maniacs. finally, the music sucked balls...

Godspeed there but watching Tomie made me realized that Junji Ito doesn't translate well to live-action for one simple reason. His stories make for the worst kind of horror movies because they're always great concepts and edging levels of build-up that leads to underwhelming blueballs climaxes. Which is fine for manga with the haunting imagery of the final panel but complete ass for horror films. Especially Japanese horror films

Humanoids From The Deep aka Genetically Engineered Frog-Human Hybrids Prowling a Small Town in Search of Young Prime Pussy.

Was a good watch and also had some interesting social commentary one wouldn't expect from a shlock monster slasher film from the 80s like this.
>>
>>223865418

>>
tonights film is Lurking Fear (1994)
>>
>>223865496
What would Tomie make you realize that? It's a weird, artsy mumblecore movie made as a companion piece to the manga under the presumption that you're already intimately familiar with the material and thus would not want to see any of the stories adapted directly and want some kind of post-script story about a Tomie event that happened entirely offscreen.

That's exactly what I wanted from it but the execution was lame as fuck. I wouldn't watch any of the straight adaptations but I'll watch the other Tomie films. Just because they remind me of the Boogiepop live action adaptation
>>

it's good until the final act and ending with the bad CGI ghosts, before that it's pretty spooky and convincing with the use of multimedia. The director's other works are total dogshit though, avoid them like the plague

I re-watched "Prince of Darkness" yesterday, and I didn't remember how messy it was. Not only was the lore all over the place, so were the characters. Running around in that church like headless chickens. I didn't get the plot either. Quantum mechanics is the root of all evil? Jesus was an extraterristial? How did they catch satan in a big glass cylinder, and why did they make it so it could be opened from the inside 7 million years ago? But then satan was not in the cylinder, he was behind a mirror? And also Catherine was also in the mirror, but she got out in the year 1-9-9-9? And the (dissolved) brotherhood of sleep broadcast that as a warning? What for? What could the students have done after the priest destroyed the mirror?

I had the impression this movie was not at all thought through. Picture: Egg Shen attacking a zombie with a shaken soda can. The attack was not successful.

Also just recently watched it. Satan's father, the Anti-God, was shut up away in the mirror world and Satan was put in the cylinder millions of years in the past by some other God(s). Jesus was an extraterrestrial who came to warn people about the cylinder but he was executed because people thought he was crazy, but his followers kept the cylinder hidden until technology found a way to deal with it. I THINK the bit with Catherine in the ending was supposed to be suggesting that while they had altered the future they hadn't actually stopped Satan, since Catherine replaces the figure you had seen in the previous future dream sequences. Not entirely sure on this and also not really sure what purpose those sequences even serve. I think the broader point with the quantum stuff is that humans had made a religion around things they didn't fully understand, but I don't think the movie really gets quite there if that is in fact what it was doing.

There's so many things about this movie that don't sit right with me. If the cylinder was made 7 million years ago (as stated by the blonde who did a "radio carbon dating" (on glass and steel)), how did it end up in Los Angeles of all places? Mountains rise, tectonic plates shift in that space of time, especially around the San Andreas fault line. How did the brotherhood of sleep know about what's in the cylinder? It's just a green slush. If Satan was trapped 7 million years ago, who tempted Job and Jesus? If the cylinder was to be opened when mankind was ready for it, why design the lock so that it could only be opened from the inside? If satan had power over homeless people, black beetles and worms, why did he need the students inside the church? Couldn't he just possess every homeless person in Los Angeles? That would be thousands.

All of these inconsistencies are the result of not adapting a book but cobbling together a movie script on the fly in my opinion. Carpenter said "Prince of Darkness" was the movie in which he took the most control over every scene and shot because of the tight budget. It might have helped if he'd known what he was going for before writing the script.

The Catholic Church, and more specifically the Brotherhood of Sleep, had been watching over the cylinder, they're the ones who moved it to LA. They knew what was in the cylinder because Jesus had told the Apostles, who went on to create the Church and passed the knowledge down. I don't think the cylinder was designed to be opened at a certain time, the Church just hoped to keep its existence secret for long enough for technology to find a solution to deal with it. I don't know that they knew when exactly Satan would be able to get out. You have to assume given that Jesus in this is an alien that most of the Biblical accounts are largely fictitious. I think the idea with the homeless people is Satan was able to control "lower" things like bugs and I guess homeless people(lol) but not the people in the church who he need to possess by having them ingest the green slush. He also needed a specific body for some reason which was that woman whose face he melted off.
I am guessing on some of this stuff because I don't think the movie connects all of its plot points super well.

>>
>>223868630
From everything I saw about it I thought it was gonna be her walking around naked on the ship killing people the whole time. But they go back to Earth and it gets boring. They could have easily trimmed 30 minutes off of the runtime. It really didn't need to be 2 hours long.

>>223868521
Well, OK. I guess that "Prince of Darkness" confused me too much. First all the bits and pieces of quantum mechanics on the university campus that didn't go anywhere. OK, they were later loosely connected to the plot when professor said for every matter particle there's an antimatter particle, so for the god of light there's also a god of darkness. Then they all arrive in the church and every student makes a statement that doesn't make sense at all, but is there purely for the impression that something mysterious (evil) is taking place. The green fluid gets out and then they all start running around in total chaos until the conclusion of the movie. At least from that point on the script seems improvised.

And what was up with that black guy? It wasn't shown how or if he got possessed. Then somehow he was walking around like a 1860's stereotype plantation negro. He killed himself, but unlike the guy whose neck got broken in the basement, he got up again and laughed manically. Which made me think Carpenter didn't really know what to do with that character, he just needed a filler for some added creepiness and a few minutes of runtime.

It wasn't a bad movie, but in my mind Carpenter should have hired a professional writer to clean up the script before they started principal photography.

>>223868695
Well that's sort of a weird thing about the movie, the characters seem to dramatically underreact to everything. Homeless people have surrounded the church and are just staring at them and there are bugs fucking everywhere but their only reaction is "huh that's kind of weird". They also all seem to be only mildly perturbed by the revelation that Jesus was an alien. The black guy takes off a cross he was wearing and the priest seems bothered by it but that's about it.
The black guy got possessed when the translator woman and the radiologist woman held him down and kissed him, rather than vomiting into his mouth like the did for everyone else. I think him walking around giggling was supposed to be Satan fucking with them, the same way he types out a message on the computer and at another point has a dead guy speak to them before exploding into a bunch of bugs. The guy in the basement starts chasing them around too, so clearly being dead doesn't prevent him from possessing your body. It's sort of unclear to me what exactly the limits of Satan's powers were or if he can communicate information between the various people he possesses. My interpretation of the black guy crying near the mirror was that because he was partially possessed by Satan, he knew the mirror was a portal to his father, but he couldn't actually open it until he had possessed that other woman. But when he does possess that woman he doesn't seem immediately aware of the giant mirror in the room the black guy is in, so I don't know.

>>
>>223868787
My guess is that Carpenter's process as a filmmaker was at the point different from that of a professional writer. He probably had an idea like what if we had students of quantum mechanics deal with the devil, and from there he developed scenes and later added bits and pieces like the "differential equations, directly translated from 2000 year old Latin". And he later added other scenes to come to the runtime of a feature film, like the thing with the bicycle. (Which was btw. a trick from Alice Cooper's stage performances, and Cooper brought his own bicycle prop when they made Prince of Darkness.)

A professional writer would have first got his core ideas, his characters and his lore straight, then written a plot outline and carefully checked if what he added conformed to his lore, and how each character or what happens is motivates when moving from action A to action B in the script. That takes time and effort. If we take the later movie "In the Mouth of Madness" for example, that seems a lot more thought through than "Prince of Darkness".
