>>223913468>>223913475>>223914785>>223914866>>223915407>Hooper has cited changes in the cultural and political landscape as central influences on the film. His intentional misinformation, that the "film you are about to see is true", was a response to being "lied to by the government about things that were going on all over the world".[9] It reflected the skepticism against the Richard Nixon administration in the wake of the Watergate, the 1973 oil crisis, the 1973 economic recession, and "the massacres and atrocities in the Vietnam War".[9][16]>The "lack of sentimentality and the brutality of things" that Hooper noticed while watching the local news, whose graphic coverage was epitomized by "showing brains spilled all over the road", led to his belief that "man was the real monster here, just wearing a different face, so I put a literal mask on the monster in my film".[12]>The idea of using a chainsaw as the murder weapon came to Hooper while he was in the hardware section of a busy store, contemplating how to speed his way through the crowd.[13]
>>223920048I was fucking obsessed with the brunette girl in this clip after I saw this, she's one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen and it turned out she was barely in any other movies after this.
>>223920065What he's arguing and what you're stubbornly ignoring is that the movie would've worked fine without it whether it's there or not and he's right and you're wrong.

>>223920065Tobe said that in 2004, long after the movie came out. It's clear that at the time he was just making something with some shock value, which he didn't dispute at the time.
>>223920116Cathie MerchantShe was only ever in 3 movies. The Haunted Palace was the last one. She mainly was just an extra in TV episodes. Sad. She really had the look.

This is just a common way horror movies try to spook the audience, like a story around the campfire.

>>223920490The Last House on the Left, The Legend of Boggy Creek, demonic horrors like The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror, Encounter with the Unknown, and you can trace it back to general urban legend telling, and horror literature like Lovecraft and Poe. TCM wasn't the first or the last, and it has always, in every case, been a way of enhancing the creepiness of a story.
>>223920559SameThe farmers around me usually still have piles of them after Halloween. On'y chumps pay a lot for them at grocery stores.

>>223920693>The Last House on the LeftI guess but the poster didn't lean into it as hard.>The Legend of Boggy CreekSure.>The Exorcist No. Being inspired by a real life case doesn't change that neither the book nor the film ever tried to claim the events depicted were based on a true story. It'd be like claiming Psycho was based on a true story because Norman Bates was inspired by Ed Gein and his crimes and disturbing relationship with his mother.>The Amityville HorrorCame out 5 years after TCM so doesn't count, and the book itself is from '77.>Encounter with the UnknownTrue, funny how your only three valid examples are all from 1972 and Legend of Boggy Creek seems extremely obscure by comparison to Wes Craven and Rod Serling. If I had to guess I'd say Last House on the Left was probably where Hooper got the idea from.>and you can trace it back to general urban legend tellingYes, but I specifically asked in relations to cinema, not literature or oral traditions.
In 24 hours, one regular poster here will be gone for good.
>>223921150Ominous post
>>223921121depends on what you're after in a film.imo it was highly kino, it just doesn't have a traditional narrative. it's about a schizo, perhaps an egyptian curse curse. the ending provides a thematic loop, but it's surreal and not a puzzle piece to put into place to make it not surreal.
>>223920009I remember watching a documentary once about the Salem witch trials, telling stories of real confessions. There were some where they described the torture and coercion and talked about how evil it was, but then they kept showing ones where there was no evidence of any kind for being pressured to confess, and the feminist host kept having to say "now, we don't know WHY she insisted that she was a witch in this situation, but she probably had a good reason for it..." and after several examples like that, I ended up believing in witches
>>223921150
>>223921165I liked it I was just confusedI wonder if it he was in some sort of hell, the Egyptian stuff lends credence to this
>>223920065>>223920357>>223921149I found an older interview where Hooper dismissed the allegorical comparisons himself just 5 years earlier in a 1999 interview celebrating its 25th anniversary:>Although released some seventeen years after the Gein affair, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre re-affirmed our ability to be repulsed and shocked, an ability we lost with the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam, the atomic aftermath in Hiroshima, and the concentration camp atrocities of World War II. But when asked if his film was a metaphor for the bloody humiliation of Vietnam or the machinations of Nixon's gang of criminals, Tobe deadpanned three words.>"It's about meat."I guess it's another Night of the Living Dead/Obsession situation where everyone else saw in the film social commentary the director didn't actually intend for, only unlike Romero and Barker (at least as of yet), Hooper decided to eventually just lean into it I guess. But considering a literal Vietnam War veteran named Chop Top exists in the sequel I don't think it was a new phenomenon that the studio invented out of the blue for Hooper to talk about so they could sell more DVDs in the 2000s.
>>223921150Reminds me of those of webcam stream horror movies like Unfriended where they die one by one.
>>223921183yeah - it's quite similar to his second film Repulsion actually, almost a retread but with more in it. and I liked the extra stuff, i.e. the hints at the supernatural because it gives you more to work with in terms of interpreting it. also there's the kafkaesque stuff, it's about a man becoming absurd, but he also sees stifling absurdity in the world around him.
>>223921150No I won't be, ya freakin moran
>>223921150>Everyone anonymous poster will be given a gun. If you can stay in the thread all night, the prize of $10,000 is yours.
>>223921185Hooper has always been a chameleon. Even looking at his movies and style over the years, he always adapted to what was popular at the time and what the market wanted. Him redefining his movies long after the fact to make them seem more socially important makes sense with his kind of personal branding and self promotion.
Okay time for something goofy, I'm putting on Basket Case
All this talk of true stories means it's time to watch this one
>>223920490every episode of the twilight zone is like that
>>223921232Maybe, but he clearly didn't come up with the social commentary stuff on his own is my point since he dismissed it himself initially, the public did.
>>223921243the great irony is it's quite a touching film.
>>223921244Good analysisI want to watch his first film now, Knife In The Water, after being so impressed with his "Apartment Trilogy"Chinatown was so boring though I'm sorryMaybe I should rewatch it

Just finished. 100<100 #032Weird anthology used to showcase some shorts by a small collective. Weird in that it seems like they cut the endings from them? The wraparound is about some chubby middle-aged dominatrix in Hell, and it seems like they might've shot those with the help of a real sex club (there's a shibari master in the credits.) The final segment has a kid who's a really good actor. There was brief footage of Hitler in the opening credits that made me go "huh?" but I forgot that completely once it turned out he's a main character in it, lol.
>>223921499this was a joke about jihadists but the AI or the transcriber didn't want to say that, so they changed it to "geologists", lmao
>>223921507Who's making these movies?Do they make a profit? Is it for fun?
>>223921529>Do they make a profit?I think almost none of them do, but everyone goes in thinking they will, or for other reasons. I know a guy who put $5k into making a totally homemade horror feature and got it on Tubi and Prime, but I think in total he's got back like $50, kek. Some of these are clearly showcases for shorts or even a particular person, and I guess the filmmakers are just hoping it'll get them work or a SAG card.
Also just finished. 100<100 #033Crazy vanity project from Pennsylvania. It's another writer/director/star/cameraman/editor/costumer/lighting director kinda project, and the lead guy is giving an unhinged performance as a maniacal stalker chemist(???) who lives in a (real) abandoned mental hospital, where the movie's shot. It's got a wide boring stretch where the two girl victims are arguing about girl shit, but when it ups the energy it gets pretty intense and nonsensical, lol. Eventually it turns out there are ghosts involved, and the climax sees the ghosts released from their bondage and flying up to heaven!! This is a bit of a hidden gem for the adventurous/experienced.trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc7PJXvr4e0

Beginning the Halloween final week countdown by starting to watch the Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror episodes. There's 37 of them now. I will enjoy the classic one, I don't know many of the newer ones yet.

OH MY FUCKING GOD I WANT TO FUCK THIS BUG SO FUCKING BAD.Anyways pretty good horror film,I recommend it for Asian horror fans, had some very tense scenes

Can binge watching only horror movies have a negative effect on your psyche?
>>223923627>Cumming soon after your pussy
People keep wanting his movies to be elevated horror, but he refuses to do it, which in turn causes seethe from a weird intersection of horror fans. Do I have that right? Like Weapons for example, everyone really wanted to be mad that it was a le slow burn allegory about school shootings and when it wasn't, people kind of didn't know what to be mad about, but they had to be mad about something.Cregger is kind of based for this. He seems to understand the genre and prioritizes a fun story over being pretentious and trying to make social commentary.
>>223924646doesn't have to be about school shootings to be elevated horror, it's still elevated horror since it's about him coming to terms with his best friend dying from his alcohol and drug addiction

>>223921581low budget PA stuff reminded me to look in on Ryan Callaway and I'm happy to report he continues making unnecessarily long christian horror films that look like lifetime movies and are full of mid white women
Are any of the Pumpkinhead films worth a watch?
>>223924900The first one absolutely is, peak comfy Autumn vibes and an amazing looking practical monster.
I watched "Final Exam" (1981), or I should say I re-watched it because I think I had already seen it a long, long time ago. But it's a mindless campus slasher flick which were a dime a dozen in the 80s and I remembered almost nothing. Plus for almost an hour it isn't even a slasher flick, it only shows frat boys and their floozies pranking and hazing and messing around. The slasher isn't motivated or has a college history. Apparently a slasher is just somebody who will show up on a random US college campus at one point. "Final Exam" is not much of a horror movie, but it is a comfy 80s watch. The 80s clearly were a different time; for example there's a professor dating a young blonde student of his, and that's totally OK by the movie. College coeds weren't posting #METOO! at the time, they were actively seducing their professor to get better grades. 4/10.
Good morning /hor/! I’ve been mulling over this movie and, in addition to the great posts other anons have made on here about it, I wanted to add:>four references to Dracula:>picked up Dracula>where Bela Lugosi is from>freezer coffin>blood drinking>the pre-Christian, pagan, cannibal Texans>vs.>the post-Christian, New Age, hippie, city-dwelling TexansThe setting is rural Texas (the home of the post-Christian, New Age, hippie, city-dwelling Texans) but it is also the location where Bela Lugosi was born, this barbarian, Eastern Europe/Balkans/Transylvania Otherland. https://youtu.be/Ge4sxLgiAGA?is=uH5VHehC9qxEuDt-The truck that runs over the brother is approaching industrialization.>Can we read this as a Christian (Catholic), conservative, crypto-fascist kino, the kind Anon likes?I think we can. First off, it’s curious that nobody is Christian. I find that interesting, like a cautionary tale of: “Here’s what happens without the civilizing nature of Christianity.” Also, sometimes, the stranger (Other) that you pick up on the road, doesn’t share your values and you’re not going to liberally love and feed taxpayer monies to, in hopes of civilizing, as shown in the present-day riots happening everywhere in the HuWest.
>>223924646I think some horror fans are just annoyed their pre-written letterboxed reviews now can't be posted for the updoots they crave.
>>223924900>>223924934I agree the first is good, but Pumkinhead 2 kept making me imagine some kid running into frame going "Pa, there's a Pumpkinhead in the barn again!" as though it could be chased out with a broom.
>>223925245Now this is the kind of schizo overthinking that preserves the soul of these threads.
>>223920009He plays a similar character in Cry Of The Banshee.
>>223925509>Cry of the Banshee>has absolutely nothing to do with Edgar Allan Poe>they have to write the name Edgar Allan Poe on the movie poster anyway

Dracula (1958) is incredibly mediocre, I thought it was a classic. Why did people keep this lie?
Freaked (1993) now, then it's Beetlejuice (1988), Little Monsters (1989) and Cemetery Man (1994) then later this evening will be Phantasm 1-4, stop in for a movie today! @ https://manestream.live/north
>>223925708Is that the Hammer Studios Dracula? I think it was the first Dracula shot in color. US studios still shot in black and white until the mid 60s, the British Hammer Studios chose to shoot Dracula in color which at the time meant that about 1/10 of the entire budget was spent on color film material. It was so expensive that even the UK rating agency understood there wouldn't be many (expensive) re-edits which would have involved re-copying on color film material just to get a better age rating.Using color paid off, the film was a big success at the time.
>>223925588cant ever go wrong with andrew robinson
>>223925792Yes, is that Dracula. But I don't mean technically, just in general. I didn't like it but it's overrated everywhere so I'm concerned about what's going on here.
>>223925810Well, it managed to be quite OK for such a small budget. The sets are so great because their studios were located in what passed for a castle at the time. It was also the first time movie blood appeared in bright red on the screen, which shocked viewers in the late 50s. But you're right, we now have 104 years of Dracula films to choose from, and this one doesn't particularly stand out. Maybe it's the nostalgia of people whose first introduction to dracula was this film. It saw many re-runs on late night TV in Europe.
>>223925894Agree with your opinion.
>>223925245Yes, there are vampire tropes in it.>Can we read this as a Christian (Catholic), conservative, crypto-fascist kino, the kind Anon likes?White supremacy? There's some of this too.
>>223925894I think it might a kind of sequel osmosis too as some of the Hammer Dracula sequels are pretty fun.
Another that sort of fits the theme, and much like the OP example less a horror movie than a historical drama spiced up with some witch torture.
>>223925245Yes, very interesting themes to mull over here.Meanwhile, the director:>waiting in line at a hardware store>see the chainsaws>"Man, I'd love to cut through this long ass line with one of these"
>>223922016>Dougie Jones
>>223926126I always felt that their scripts seemed rather improvised, and when I watched the documentary about Hammer Studios about 6 months ago, I learned why. Their writer was actually a production assistant, they didn't have a professional writer for a long time. The difference is obvious when you get to "Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter", which was written and directed by British TV legend Brian Clemens who wrote and created other (non-horror) TV shows and films that were really successful.
>>223926126One of the biggest problems with Hammers stuff are the limited sets. After the fifth movie with those same twisty columns and the plinths outside it gets old.
>>223925245>>223925946I always kind of saw TCM as something akin to Tolstoy's 'The Power of Darkness' on steroids and meth where the pettiness of peasants almost creates a spiraling blackhole of increasing sin and crime. In the play one small sin builds on another until things reach pretty a appalling state only redeemed and ended by confession. In TCM the confession and subsequent redemption has been much too long delayed and things have become all the more appalling and deranged to the point seems impossible that redemption could even occur. Such is American society.
>>223926250That only goes for their oldest movies. They had to move in the mid 60s and used sets built on sound stages from then on.

One common theme that you find across all horror films that supports my claim about why horrors are conservative is: there is no moral relativism. Evil is evil. There is no, as Slavoj Zizek* citing someone else, I believe, said: “A villain is someone whose story we don’t know.”*Nota bene: Slavoj Zizek is your run-of-the-mill, Central European, post-communist, moderate conservative who sells the kids conservatism but claims it’s communism so the kids eat it up.

Watched two flicks, The Hitcher (1986) and Diary of the Dead (2007), what did I think of them
>>223926359Okay bait, might work on some.
>>223927167You thought The Hitcher was cool but mostly for when Rutger Hauer is on screen, and Diary of the Dead was shit (in your opinion) and old man Romero's attempt at "staying hip"
>>223927019https://youtu.be/dL3hX1VtgFw?t=104
>>223927118I've noticed some 4k remasters look worse. The film grain can end up looking like digital noise. Downloaded seinfeld remux and it looked like fucking shit.
So now that all the Gen Z are surely gone, what's the best horror movie of 2026?
>>223927320Buddy
>>223927320>what's the best horror movie of 2026?werwulf
>>223927257>You thought The Hitcher was coolyeah overall I thought it was great>and Diary of the Dead was shit (in your opinion) surprisingly it was the opposite, I admit being a zoomer I wasn't familiar with uncs game and a certain point it becomes a comedy more than a horror/thriller, clearly the point was social/political messaging mostly about media with the movie thrown in there last minute, nice tits also

>>223926285Fascinating. Good comment. Is it because Protestants don’t have confession?
>>223927005>across all horror filmsthat is false and you know it's false so idk why you took the time to write this out.
>>223927167Nolan clearly was enamored with Rutger Hauer after watching the hitcher. He cast Hauer in 'Batman Begins' and showed the hitcher to the cast of 'the dark knight' for inspiration.
>>223927600Watch this as well
>>223927916How is it false?
>>223927963your claim is that no horror films have ever shown sympathy to, or somehow offered justification for the actions of, the villain? if that is your claim is it false.
>>223928021it is false*sry I'm posting and driving
>>223928021You’re right. I could’ve been clearer and said that rarely is there the kind of moral relativism going on that tries to blur the boundary between good and evil by providing some sympathetic backstory for the villain.
>>223927783More like a metaphor the suburbs are unsafe and repressed sexuality is bad.
>>223928080>sex-havers die>Girl Scout lives
I watched "Dead & Buried" (1981), my 2nd movie today from 1981. Lisa Blount is in it, the love interest from "Prince of Darkness" who pushes the woman into the mirror and saves the world in the end. And Robert Englund who later became Freddy Krueger. "Dead & Buried" has a slow pace, but some great practical effects. The scene where the mortician reconstructs the pretty hitch hiker's face, puts a glass eye in her empty eye socket, and then she gets up and opens her eyes and it's not a dummy anymore is great. Halfway through the movie I guessed correctly that the policeman must also be a walking corpse, because why shouldn't he be when everybody else is. 6/10, comfy 80s horror kino.
My gay boyfriend wants me to crossdress this year for Halloween :/
>>223927469I watched obsession and backrooms at the same time but I still kept looking at my phone to watch tiktok

>>223928377>>223928080you are both wrong, slasher as a genre is there to make men understand just why women don't feel safe around strangers
>>223928277I watched this last night. I admittedly didn't pay a ton of attention to it, but I liked the concept and mystery presented.
>>223928076you say rarely but i think it happens a lot, and maybe even moreso in the past than today.>frankenstein killed a kid but it's only because his creator defied god and created an unnatural being>wolfman isnt bad, he just has the wolfman curse>jason has the sympathetic backstory of being bullied to death>michael sometimes given the sympathetic backstory of an abusive childhood>bubba in tcm sometimes gets the abusive childhood excuse (this applies to most movies where the "monster" is some kind of deformed/retarded guy who had a bad childhood)then there are horror movies where the monster is actually the good guy, like dark night of the scarecrow, or a purely neutral enforcer of some kind of weird cosmic justice hellraiser, pumpkinhead
>>223923910top kek
>>223928395reminds me of that television show Stranger Retards
>>223928395>>223928080Uh sweeties it's clearly about how violence doesn't solve everything (Donald Pleasance shot him SIX TIMES! SIX TIMES! SHOT HIM IN THE HEAART)
>>223928277I liked it quite a bit, I just felt the ending was sudden, needed another beat or two to settle in. Felt like an abrupt Hong Kong movie ending.
>>223928277The pretty hitchhiker was Lisa Marie, Tim Burton's ex who played Vampira in Ed Wood and the female Martian in Mars Attacks!
>>223928349you sure he's gay and not a closeted breeder?
>>223928604Yes, the ending was quite sudden. Maybe it didn't register with me so much since I had guessed it some 20 minutes earlier.>>223928623Thanks, that's interesting. For some reason "Ed Wood" doesn't show up in her filmography, but if you go the other way round and look up "Ed Wood", there she is as Vampira.

>>223920009What did I think of Del Toro's Frankenstein?
>>223928769I thought this was just a gag from the movie Popcorn
>>223928912I need to re-read Frankenstein before I watch any of the movies to get all the Illuminati, social engineering, Germans-destroying-civilization-as-per-usual tropes.
>>223928912it looked good but was average and never really gets the emotional element going, which is what it wants to do.
>>223928951>Ordnung muss sein for wir, liberalism/communism for du.
>>223928912Missed opportunity to do a faithful adaptation of Shelley's book to just regurgitate ground del Toro's already covered in his other films. He took away all of the moral complexity and ambiguousness in Victor and the Creature's relationship and characterizations and made Victor literally evil and the monster a dindu. It's also corny del Toro literally did references (like to Curse of Frankenstein) like this is a Marvel movie or Star Wars.
>>223928629I'm a boy so I'm not sure what he's gonna breed.
>>223928932nope, it's a real thing
Last night I watched "The Bay" and it made me VERY happy to see my state's culture represented so well in a found footage horror film.Apparently it was actually filmed in South Carolina but it sure fooled me, it looked like any town on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Also, the movie was good.
Del Toro's a hack
>>223929089he's just in it to jerk off to cgi monsters, the whole film career is a side gig at best
>>223928979>made Victor literally evil and the monster a dinduNo, you did that. Very common now unfortunately, just blatantly ignoring what is actually explicitly depicted, flattening the text to preserve your slip-shod narratives and half-cocked judgements. The fatherhood/creation/christian themes are rich and the act of forgiveness dramaturgically compelling.
>>223928979the movie was bad but you needs meds anyway
>>223928912I was amazed someone made an entire film that looked like an E3 trailer for a PS3 game.
they should make a horror film about a monster that engenders sympathy from the leads, only to actually be an unrepentant monster

>>223929206Isn't this most zombie movies

>>223928951>Germans-destroying-civilization-as-per-usual tropes.Yeah, just like Nosferatu 1922 since it's about the aftermath of WWI>It's their cultcha
>>223929145I noticed this with the new Carrie. A lot of really distorted recounting what occurs so the work better fits as a failure counter to their notion of what it's 'supposed' to be. Whatever problems of apprehension get compounded with clumsy wielding of very loaded words like "evil" and "irredeemable" e.g. Obsession. language games innit
>>223929341I was watching a Youtuber and he so perfectly expressed what I’ve always believed:>communism is a weapon
>>223929324it started very promising but it spent too much time going back and forth between "it's the end of the world" and "nobody knows what's going on and is still going to work normally and stuff."

And my third movie from 1981 today was "Looker". It's not that I picked them for that particular year, it just so happened that I had "Final Exam", "Dead & Buried" and "Looker" on my watchlist, and they all turned out to be from 1981. "Looker" may or may not be horror, maybe it's a dystopian scifi with horrible deaths by a serial killer in it. It also has some very beautiful women in it. Albert Finney plays the main role, which he also does in the true horror movie "Wolfen" from the same year. They predicted generative AI, and the story is something that in part could happen today, 45 years later: Models show up at a plastic surgeon with computer generated instructions down to the millimeter on how to alter their faces to achieve perfection. They are later scanned so that a computer can recreate them in commercials and have them move perfectly. After they're done a murderer with a looker device (optical impulse hypnosis) visits the model and kills her so that it'll look like an accident or a suicide. What's so evil about that? The villain has a computer generated presidential candidate speak to billionaire donors, and the looker optical hypnosis embedded in the CGI senator's eyes makes the donors do whatever the villain wants them to do. Anyway, it was well made and entertaining, but some aspects are always unrealistic and larger than life in a Michael Crichton movie. 7/10.

>>223925553Roger Corman had been directing a whole series of Poe adaptations starring Vincent Price around that time. The studio may well have thought that it was a good marketing move to include Poe's name on the poster since Price was the lead. Might have been Corman himself who suggested it, since AIP was the company in charge of distributing the film.
I like the Sara Paxton rape scene from Last House on the LeftHe gave it to her pretty goodAnd I believe she was only 18 years old at the time of filmingAlso Jesse Pinkman was there too... just watching
>>223930399Yes, I remember "The Haunted Palace" (1963). The movie was a mishmash of three or four short stories by H.P. Lovecraft. They put a few lines from a poem by Poe before the opening titles so that they shamelessly could claim it was an Edgar Allan Poe adaptation.

If audiences in 1982 had a much more open mind, the Halloween franchise could've become a horror anthology series centered around the day of Halloween. Everything could've been fresh and original.Instead we got forever rehashed Myersslop.
>>223929511I still haven't seen the 1993 version, only the 78 one. I just watched Strange Invaders today, which is a ripoff of it. It's a really bad movie, but was also somewhat enjoyable and has Nancy Allen in it.
>>223930914I saw a scene from this when I was like five years old where the dude in the hotel room cracks his head open and is actually an alien and I thought it was from the 70s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers but it wasn't and then 35 years later I randomly put this on and the scene was actually in it and I fucking jumped out of my chair
>>223930940For being clearly low budget, the effects and aliens were pretty okay at times
