Snoke could have been a former Emperor’s Hand or Inquisitor or some shit that Luke tries to fully train and redeem and metaphorically save his father and surpass Obi-Wan as a teacher. He fails and either fails to kill him or spares him. Decades later Snoke emerges and has been corrupting ans twisting Ben right under Luke's nose. Yadda, yadda, yadda. The Last Jedi roles up and Luke leaves with Rey to confront Snoke and Kylo. Snoke sees how powerful Rey is and wants her as his new apprentice, Kylo at the same time seeing Snoke was just a manipulator and deceiver the whole time. Rey joins Snoke under the promise of power and finding her family, and Kylo returns to Luke realizing his failures and resolving to undo the first order and redeem himself. There's a fight, bullshit happens, both sides escape, the story is set for the third movie.

>>223927699Part of the problem is that they wanted to have their "the New Republic won" cake while still playing the "and the good guys are still the overwhelming underdogs" card - so the consequence is that the First Order comes out of fucking nowhere and has rebuilt itself into an even bigger, badder, stronger version of the Empire through offscreen bullshit, making it feel less like a tangible organization of real people and more like whatever the writers need it to be in a particular scene.Supposedly, the New Republic exiled everyone vaguely associated with the Empire (including probably a lot of people who were just doing day to day work for the recognized government rather than running around clubbing baby space seals and twirling their moffstaches), so it would have been much more interesting to see the First Order as a collection of exiles and their descendants trying to rebuild lives on the fringes of galactic civilization and having guys like Snoke and Hux being rabble rousers leading a splinter faction that's trying to stir up shit with the New Republic. You could have stormtroopers evolve into a less sinister, more neutral organization of peacekeepers in the FO and have characters like Finn and Phasma be at odds over how to deal with the discovery of a spy like Poe and end up on opposite sides of the emerging conflict.
