I’m really struggling with Battlestar Galactica. Everyone raves about it being one of the best science-fiction shows of all time but I find it to be a pretty average show with the occasional episode that’s pretty good. I find the writing to be melodramatic, sappy, and corny. The acting is really inconsistent; Starbuck, Sharon, Helos, Kat, Dualla, and the chief cannot act for shit. I’m currently on the second season and just watched Scar. God, what an excruciating episode to sit through. Seriously, how did Starbuck’s actress get the job? The shows attempts at being serious and emotional feel really cheesy, its attempts at badass moments often fall flat, the romances are all really cringe inducing, and whenever a character tries to be funny, especially the obnoxious hotshot pilots when they quip during missions, I roll my eyes.

Are you? It is constantly brought up in conversations when people talk about the best sci-fi shows.

Everything in media is you-had-to-be-there, and if you're watching it in 2026 you weren't there. You can't have a tiktok brained diarrhea colored zoomer watching media from a time when people still had an attention span and expect it to work. It's the same thing as people thinking LOTR is generic fantasy, or not understanding what was so special about Star Wars. It's beyond you, you missed it. Go watch a roblox streamer or something, live in your own time.
>>
>>223934124
I watched it first time in 2021. It was great.
>>
>>223934124
LOTR and Star Wars were both before my time and I enjoy them just fine. Star Trek TOS is one of my favorite shows of all time. Believe me, this is not an issue of attention span or not being able to appreciate something that is before my time.

Yeah the whole story line of the New Caprica insurgency was taken from the news from Iraq.

New Caprica was pretty much the end of the series. After that, they started that "Final Five" bullshit and it went right into the toilet.
>>
>>223933992
The miniseries/pilot and the first season are pretty good, but then it drops off hard and gets worse over time. It arguably peaks with "33," the first episode of the first season.
>>
>>223933992
You had to have been there in the 2000s.

Compared to basically every sci-fi on the air at the time, there was nothing like it. It (and Lost) more or less killed the "monster of the week" format of shows like Stargate. SG:U's existence was a completely on the nose aping of BSG.

People were pretty desperate for space sci fi back then. We were in kind of a lull where all the Star Trek series had ended and nerds were looking for something to fill the void. A lot of people convinced themselves that BSG was super gritty and deep and therefore that meant it was good. It was like "OMG they aren't doing loud explosions in space...so realistic!"

Also, you have to realize that a lot of fandom of BSG was women, unlike pretty much any other sci fi show up to that time. They drove a lot of the discourse about how awesome the show was. Stuff like the melodrama, the sappiness, the constant love triangles obvious play to the female crowd. And the whole Starbuck is le badass drove a lot of the popularity of the show.

The writers basically admitted they made shit up as they went along. Obvious that they hadn't planned things out ahead of time, which led to constant fakeouts, constant cheap thrills about revealing someone was a Cylon.

TIL "eye teeth" = canines. What a dumb thing to call them. Why not just say "teeth" or "teeth and nails"?

>you were supposed to watch this back in the day on the space/sci-fi channel it's too late
I tried to watch it back in the day. I kept hearing about how great it was, but when I tuned in I had no idea what was going on. It wasn't until years later I started watching the DVD's from the beginning and I ended up watching entire seasons day and night. It was crazy.

What the fuck is going on here?

>just watched Scar. God, what an excruciating episode to sit through.

Your bait would be better and more believable if you removed this part.

BSG was basically a show that was 10% rebooting a forgotten chrome-schlock sci-fi from the 70s (the actual fact that it was a reboot of that show is 100% irrelevant), maybe 30% decent actors carrying mediocre material, and the rest was just "We really, really want to make something to compete with Stargate and Star Trek TNG, but we have no ideas".

Some of the early stuff was ok, it was your average space sci-fi. But it had a problem that it was never going anywhere, in a literal sense because the people making it had no idea what the actual point of the show was or what they were going to do with it, and the more it wound on and on, the less and less it made sense, until it crashed and burned miserably in the last seasons and then shot itself in the face right at the end.

>they started that "Final Five" bullshit and it went right into the toilet.
That last season. Lol. That one guy jump roping away all that weight seemingly overnight.
>>
>"We really, really want to make something to compete with Stargate and Star Trek TNG, but we have no ideas".

Stargate was on the same network so they didn't need to compete with it, and TNG as ceased airing a full decade earlier.

On the DVD commentaries Ron D. Moore insists it all went by his plan according to the show bible he made.

The insurgency the humans wage on New Caprica led by Saul in S2 was meant to be an allegory for the war in Iraq.

congratulations on saying nothing, you fucking zoomer retard.

>melodramatic

it's a soap opera and their extreme emotions reflect the extreme situation they're in. should they be subdued about everything and treat the situation they're in as mundane?

just stick to meaningless shit shows like severance.
