Undertone, like much atmospheric-horror, requires nice- and loud- audio to function. Laptops or shitty built in TV speakers just aren't going to be able to cast that spell. Even if you find the premise silly I admired that it was committed with the cards it held and tried more than just jump scares. Found the first hour really nailed the unease late at night in a dark house.

it's horror anthology with a stupid wraparound. for some reason there's 4 people wandering around a basement together looking for an exit, no idea who they are, if they know each other or how they ended up there. when a ghoulish man named "the sentinel" enters from a side door and informs them that he's there to punish them for their future sinners, we then watch 4 segments showing their sins.
it's kinda cheap looking with some really bad acting, but overall i really enjoyed it, especially the 2nd segment. it felt like i was watching low-mid tier "tales from the darkside" episodes and i really love that series. so if you're a fan of the show, i'd recommend checking it out
>>
I watched "The Dunwich Horror" (2009), which in contrast to the cheap 1970 film was a cheap TV movie. Dean Stockwell is in this again, as is Jeffrey Combs. The TV movie takes a lot of liberties with the source material and invents some new characters and locations, but what are you going to do when a short story simply does not have enough material for 92 minutes of runtime? For the Necronomicon they make use of is the 1977 Necronomicon paperback by "Simon", and they think if they photocopy it or print it out on brownish paper, crumple it and straighten it out again, they can pass that off as "ancient parchment". Oh, well ... it is what it is. 3.5/10.

You can have easily 6 movies for it for 1 day so it's a good choice
>>
>>223962797
>Corman/Poe
I was trying to figure out why they made these, often with no more relation to Poe than a few lines from a Poe poem quoted at the beginning. The only reason I can come up with is that Universal probably had gotten all the good horror IPs while Poe was in the public domain in the late 50s/early 60s.

The hot naked with from Debbie Does Demons is Countess Bathory here, who puts an ad out for a caretaker job just to lure a girl whose been chosen as the vessel for Satan's baby. She's given a mark of Satan and then kills and eats her husband. She dreams a big worm hand puppet is raping her and then wakes up pregnant! She gives birth to another hand puppet and it starts killing people. Five stars!

The Back rooms was unexpectedly enjoyable despite expecting it to be shit. Not scary at all though. I guess I'm a sucker for lore heavy films.

Also its getting a bit annoying having depictions of men going to therapy and it being either "you're not mentally ill, you're just an awful person" or "you're going to therapy to help you be an even worse person". It's a weirdly common thing.

>>223965509

>The Back rooms was unexpectedly enjoyable despite expecting it to be shit.
Truth.
>Not scary at all though.
More truth, but to be fair, only kids are scared of movies. Getting a thrill is different for an adult.

>you're going to therapy to help you be an even worse person"
That's actually the real goal because curing or helping anyone doesn't keep the cash flow coming in.

It's a prison break movie set in old timey France, but it's Edgar Allan Poe's Legend of Horror because one of the two guys escaping happens to be the main character from The Tell-Tale Heart, who tells his story in an extended flashback that appears to be a dubbed episode of some Spanish TV program. Those stop-motion stabbings are wild. The poster has nothing to do with anything, there isn't a single cat in the movie.

Same energy lol, all those creepy closeups of Lecter always reminded me of Lugosi in Dracula. There are a lot of fairly obvious similarities between the two characters come to think of it, even in the books.
>Hopkins was cast, of course, and in the excerpt he writes, “I instinctively sensed how to play Hannibal. I have the devil in me. We all have the devil in us. I know what scares people.”

>He recalls avoiding his co-star and fellow Oscar winner Jodie Foster during production—in service of the odd dynamic between their characters—though he writes that they’re great friends now. At the time, though, she was a bit afraid of him, he says.

>“On the day of the first table reading … I was as scary as I could be. You could have heard a pin drop in the room. A couple of seconds after I started to speak as Lecter, I saw Jodie grow tense,” he wrote.

>And here’s where Dracula came in: “I also called on my childhood impersonations of Bela Lugosi at boarding school. As a kid, I went to see him in Dracula. That had been one of the first big books I ever read. In the book, the protagonist Jonathan Harker nicks himself with a razor and senses Dracula’s rapt attention. The sound I imagined Dracula made in that moment, thirsting for Harker’s blood, was a very particular combination of hissing and slurping.”

>“That’s where I got the sound I made with my lips as Hannibal, the one that gets imitated so much.”

As well made as 1931's Frankenstein is I don't really like how they kind of drop the idea of Frankenstein being an evil sociopath once he successfully animates the monster. "Herr Frankenstein was interested only in human life. First to destroy it then recreate it. There you have his mad dream" fits the character perfectly then it just kind of gets dropped and he becomes like oh no this guy is in this unfortunate situation. Which is doubly odd because the monster is clearly meant to be the sympathetic one and much more so than in the book. It's so strange how he's this grave robbing maniac at the start but then his science experiment works so now everyone is like oh well ok i guess instead of horrified.

I really like Peter Cushing's Dr Frankenstein where he's never shown in a good light or presented as any kind of normal.
