It's not that easy to get right. You have to draw on several distinct creative wells, give them a reason to exist, have innate sincerity to sell it, and then package it all in a way that makes sense both within and with respect to the format.
i don't think it failed as much as you don't see a lot of it talked about because so much of it ends up being flat.
buffet infinity is worth watching though. it's a bit stretched out but has a lot to offer.

I saw this movie several times on TV back in the day and every time I wondered if a large piece of the movie was edited out because I was always confused towards the end. Was the tv version that bad or si the movie just nonsensical towards the end?

I’m going to blogpost on OP’s behalf. I watched Salem’s Lot a week ago, I think it was on Amazon Prime or Tubi, and it still holds up. Solid horror movie and I’m surprised they’d put something like that on TV in the 70’s. I watched it because it’s my favorite Stephen King book and my dad said he had nightmares after watching it in the 70’s. Way better than the It miniseries in the 90’s.

I can't recall much but it was something about being on the Buddy show except I was my 35 year oldass self and I had to sing with Buddy but didn't know the proper words and was fumbling the song and scared he'd kill me becauseof that as I kept hugging him and trying to placate him with love, kinda like when the kids try to fake it, some other situations like that
Then I escaped except once I left the building at the end of Buddyfor some reason I time traveled into some gritty shitty future and now it turned into some scifi horror where the scientists there wanted to perform horrific experiments on me and I was all alone and suffering and apparently time traveling was a big crime
I sometimes have nightmares about dystopian, grimy industrial futures and ending up there for some reason from the present

I don't think the tapes had anything to do with the disappearances. I think the dude who owned the storage unit was mostly telling the truth. That it was an elaborate shitpost. I think Michael was probably just some weirdo internet dweller and that protag just went off the deep end because he never had any real closure with his wife's disappearance. Also Alice didn't exist. Lithgow made a jab about going down a rabbit hole and then dude started seeing a woman named Alice everywhere. Movie was shown from his pov so he's an unreliable narrator

You know this is the most likely scenario deep down. It's why you dream of it often. Transhumanism will be nightmarish once it's actually within our grasp.

>>224026633
>tapes had nothing to do with the disappearances
Oh I like this! I still think the protag is the killer, and since you mentioned the tapes being a nothingburger, he probably used that as a form of cope and mental gymnastics to convince himself that the creator of the tapes is the killer and not himself. How would you explain the flashback sequence in the beginning? The gfs face was the mask used on the tapes, and it occurred before he saw any of the tapes
Nice that you caught the Alice reference I thought that was well done

There’s still some things I don’t get, did the protag actually make the tapes with the fat guy? If so, was he playing oblivious the entire time? Michael must have been the accomplice cause that was his hand on the last tape, so why didn’t he recognize the protag? There is also the way he changed his tone during the script recording half way through, maybe the protag told him at one point to not recognize him if they cross paths again and just play along? Who was calling the phone, all in his head? So many more questions
>>
>>224026985
I think James saw one of the original broadcasts and that's how he knew about the mask. Then he just tried to tie the coincidences together. I don't think he had anything to do with making the tapes

Did Michael and the fat guy know each other? The shed was (allegedly) the spot where the tapes occurred. If not, where was the original recording spot? Maybe the house belonged to Michael and the fat guy? Still doesn’t explain how the protag knew about the house, maybe just a coincidence?

Wrong. I get that it's a bit of a slow burn for a slasher but everything from the atmosphere, music, cinematography, editing, characters and even the plot is top notch. There's a level of paranoia present in the film that is only matched by The Thing. With each of these two movies Carpenter proves that mystery can prove a valuable ally in creating horror and tension. A lot of old classic horror stories from the greats were also good mysteries after all.

You're fucking retarded and most likely the "can't read" skin color.

All of the horror of book-version Salem's Lot comes from how smart Barlow is and how he slowly corrupts each and every single member of the town to do his will. To pull that off you need a large ensemble cast. The movies turned Barlow into just Retard Goblin, but the book version is pure Machavellian.

King did the same thing, even better, in the first 90% of Needful Things, but he fucked it up at the end with a stupid "le symbolism" ending.
>I'm pretty sure the real Stephen King died in that van crash. His 20th century work is pretty fuckin good.

Psycho and The Birds were the original slow burns, then Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby. Halloween was also heavily inspired by Psycho and Black Christmas, Donald Pleasence's character is literally named after a character from Psycho. What they all manage to do so well though is the mood and atmosphere. I guess slow burn horror just isn't for everyone.
