posting my comment here because I don't wanna support this thread >>224078194but it reminded me of that Voyager episode where there was silver goo on a planet that became sentient after touching Tom and Harry and cloning them and refused to let Voyager leave because it didn't want to go back to non-sentience. and Janeway was like "cool chill let us go and you can clone anyone you want who will let you." and then they show them leaving the planet and it's like the entire crew apparently agreed to be cloned and left there. That really surprised me honestly. I think my initial reaction would be hell no I wont be cloned but on the other hand I can also see the appeal of knowing your DNA and another version of you is thriving on an uninhabitable planet and might thrive on for eternity even if you never make it home. but also randomly remembering that a clone of me exists would give me really bad anxiety and dread so idk.
who is the best Trek captain, and why is he Jellico?
>>224081900No one cared who I was until I put on the mask
>>224082095And then later in Voyager, in the most depressing video ever, they all fucking die
>>224082095I would tell myself that by his very nature, the silver goo version of me is a completely different type of being and I would encourage him to explore also the aspects of himself that stem from that, whatever they may be. Sort of like when Odo was exploring his heritage by turning into rocks and metal and that chair next to Kira's bed.

starting a full tng rewatch tomorrow after only doing random playlists of selected favorite episodes for years now. just so i get the spic taste out of my mouth and proper honour stewarts passing. havent done it since early covid, so i'm actually a little giddy
>>224082095If it were just my DNA I absolutely would not give a shit. If it were a straight-up clone of my current consciousness, I guess that question is "Do I want to completely abandon my life to go on this adventure (but not really?)" because ultimately that is the decision being made.
>>224082539TNG is highly rewatchable. You can also go through the Memory Alpha pages for every episode as you watch, and/or the TNG compendium.
>>224082149Always found it interesting he had such young children, especially considering people live longer in Trek, so he'd be even older than the actor portraying him (54)
>>224082539i've rewatched TNG almost continuously for 20 years, sometimes i watch DS9
>>224082560in the episode the details are really peculiar because it is a clone of your consciousness and it seems your personality as well to a certain degree but the clones are clearly also different because they perceive the planet differently than the originals so they may have real physiological differences as well. it's kinda like your own consciousness and personality is just their starting point. also there is no choice to make because the clones can only exist on the planet because it's Y class or whatever and the atmosphere is sulphur gas or some shit. the originals can't breathe it and the clones can't breathe oxygen.
>>224082643Come to think of it, the David Warner (51) Cardassian had a little girl too

>>224083732TOS was full of sentient robots
They seem to be putting some of the DS9 and Voyager episodes through AI slop upscalers when they get broadcast on HDTV channels.
>>224085294That's just the result of a bad de-interlacing filter. The problem with the 90's shows is that the live action was shot at 24fps but the visual effect were often shot at 30fps. I've noticed it causing interlacing or judder artifacts especially when they lazily try converting everything to a consistent 24fps.
>>224085435Maybe it is just that. I don't have the original DVDs to compare it to though and I believe they were the highest quality versions that have ever been released.
One thing that annoys me about DS9 is how dark it is.
>>224085435>live action was shot at 24fps but the visual effect were often shot at 30fpsI always wondered why this is. CGI would have taken forever to render a single frame back then, so why not just use the lower framerate?

Was Miles an idiot?
>>224085868i love ds9 so much
>>224085821I'm not talking about CGI I'm talking about the actual physical model ships they'd shoot at 30fps. When they released TNG on blu-ray and they had to convert everything to 24fps to match the live action footage. Back when TV's were all CRT's running at 60hz interlaced the difference wasn't really a perceptible issue.
>>224085868It's the most creative and took the most risks. Just watched "Rules of Engagement", damn good episode. Love how they integrated the examinations into the flashbacks.
>>224085948honestly as I'm watching through Voyager right now I think it's actually the most creative.
>>224085966>rehashed TNG plots for 3 seasons then BORG BORG BORG interlaced with more rehashed TNG plots>the most creativeYeah okay.
>>224085966Not really, IMHO. Voyager never took any real risks. It was way too clean and safe for an isolated smaller science vessel trapped in the Delta Quadrant. Equinox and Year of Hell were the sort of thing that should have happened more often.
>>224086020ok what risk did they take on DS9 having an ensemble cast do interpersonal drama on a space station? i love DS9 but you sound like a contrarian retard. all I said is Voyager showed more creativity which was actually necessary because they didn't have the strengths to fall back on that DS9 has.

>>224088672I doubt they wait seven years though. For them it’s probably just soup and chill.
>>224085937It's probably a side effect of them compositing effects using a video system (it was the sort of thing typically used for putting together motion graphics for news shows and stuff like that), rather than doing their compositing on film, which would be a much slower process. So the system is already natively working in 30fps for regular broadcast TV since their 24fps film footage fed into it has already been telecine'd

It's enough to wow a casual fan of TNG but anyone who actually knows and cares about Star Trek will see all of the flaws beneath the "comfy" coat of paint that is the reuniting of the TNG cast.None of the cast act like their characters. They are not playing Picard, Geordi, Worf, etc, they are playing "The TNG Cast at Conventions." Worf is played as a doddering old man who has become a Klingon pacifist even though he should more or less be in his Klingon 40s. Riker and Picard make some comment about "leaving things to the egg-heads" at some point as if everyone in Starfleet isn't a fucking egg-head and Picard isn't the biggest anthropology nerd in existence. Marina hasn't done Troi's accent in so long that she probably forgot she ever did one in the first place. She's just British. Crusher looks like she's joined the Son'a from Insurrection and has some weird Halloween mask of someone else's skin stretched over her face. Seven of Nine is there too and she's a bloodthirsty girlboss out for revenge who becomes a captain even though she's never held a rank in Starfleet of any kind. The awful drug addict character from earlier seasons is there to keep the "wypipo" in check. It's genuinely a terrible, terrible fucking show that shits on various lore points, like bringing back Changelings just to forget how they fucking work.Utter, complete fucking trash. The only people who talk about Nutrek in this thread are the Lower Decks spergs who are only ITT to ragebait and troll.
>>224097790>>224097807I imagine that for normal viewers in the 60s, this was a weird episode where the nothing he did made any sense even knowing that his mission statement was (as he explains to his Beta-5 computer, the same prop as the M-5 from The Ultimate Commputer) "to save humanity from dooming itself to destruction". And to modern viewers like myself who know that THIS is the guy they're trying to sell to us as the protagonist for a new series, absolutely nothing about him is appealing. Gary Seven is a dullard, a hardass, an idiot, and he's not funny either. If he's Supervisor 194, why doesn't he realize that Miss Lincoln isn't 201? If his vault was able to teleport him to the McKinley AFB, why the hell didn't 347 & 201 use that instead of driving there and dying in a car accident? If his sonic screwdriver can put people into a happy trance, why doesn't he do that to Miss Lincoln either time he pulls it out to use it?The worst thing is how they keep putting Kirk & Spock on the backfoot to prop up the new guy. They've got every reason to be suspicious of him, and he's done nothing to gain their trust as someone who really is providing beneficial aide. He couldn't use B-5 to vouch for him, and he'd never submit to a mind-meld to probe his thoughts because he wants to keep the planet he comes from a secret, but surely the medical scans Bones performed would be sufficient for the truth detectors they have onboard (as seen in "Wolf in the Fold", and earlier in "Court Martial").continued

>>224099513They did find the incident in their records in the end, right down the exact distance of the detonation in the lower thermosphere 104 miles above the surface, so there's no reason that they couldn't have used that to verify Gary's mission of a controlled detonation to deescalate the nuclear arms race - a plan that makes no sense anyway, because the Russians & Chinese would just look at it as another failure of American engineering because both of THEIR satellites were launched and work just fine! If this had been the first of these that'd be one thing, but Spock clearly states that it's a DETERRENCE satellite.Even worse is the way the writers have the Enterprise crew handle things because it doesn't matter what they do in Gary's episode, like beaming up with a pair of cops and then beaming them right back down without doing anything to their memories. This was a huge deal last time, in "Yesterday is Tomorrow" but here it's treated like an incidental punchline. And the fucking sexy catlady to top things off, just reminds me of Catspaw and how much that blowed. Like fine, Gary sucks, but so does his entire supporting cast of: snarky computer, cat with no lines, and a woman having the worst day of her life. How the hell did the writer for "Obsession" screw this up so badly? Which is stupid. Their mission? Observe how... humanity DIDN'T annihilate itself with nukes. Also stupid. I don't know. It just doesn't feel consistent with the rest of TOS. It really felt like they were trying to figure out how to force Star Trek into the pilot of this spinoff.
>>224100349It's not going to be consistent. The story was a handwave by Roddenberry who just wanted an excuse to show off his new pilot, thinking audiences would fall in lover with the characters (lol).Assignment Earth throws Roddenberry's reputation into suspect territory as he was ultimately ready to abandon Star Trek the moment he thought its prospects were bad. Apparently Gene's micromanaging of the pilot included him hemming her skirt as high as they could get it, and she hated the experience so much that she never talked about the series afterwards.I might have liked the cat lady more if they showed her off sooner than a split-second teaser which makes it unclear if Gary knows she can change shape, or if that's gonna be a weird love triangle where Isis prevents Roberta from pursuing anything serious with Gary because she loves her master too much to let anyone else near him and Gary doesn't think it's unusual because of his stupid alien upbringing removing all common sense from him.Apparently the idea was reused for another Roddenberry project called "The Questor Tapes" about a ROBOT who the aliens send down to save us from ourselves, and I've gotta wonder if the robot has better social skills than Gary Fucking Seven. Wikipedia also says Questor served as partial inspiration for Data on TNG, and I love Data so clearly the idea had something going for it.>>224100393>>224100568Yeah, The Menagerie Part 2 was pretty high up there for flawed episodes, but mainly because of how it rewrites the original Cage and does kind of a bad job of it. It makes sense if it was just shoved in to meet a quota. Nowadays, the studio LIMITS how many episodes you get, which creates its own share of problems.>>224100674Lmao.
>>224099513>>224099612I don't understand what all the fuss was about over Spock's Brain. Sure the science isn't there today for how the human brain functions, but did they really know this much about it back in the 60s? Or rather, did they know enough in the 60s that even contemporaries said this was stretching the fiction of science-fiction too far?And maybe some of the scenes early on, like Kirk & Bones debating things in Sickbay or Kirk discussing which of the Sigma Draconids to land on, had some odd dialogue to them, but perhaps that was purposely done to emphasize what a great absence Spock has left behind. That without his counsel, Kirk must rely even more heavily on his hunches. Also, the stuff with the sex-segregated (sexregated) society of the Morgs & Eymorgs - sidenote: if this is a matriarchal society, why do they still follow the same naming pattern as we do? Morg is Man/Male, and Eymorg is WOman/FEmale, but if the Eymorg run things (via the controller) shouldn't their half be the dominant term with the subservient Morg reduced to a prefix? - but anyway, even their whole society getting dragged back to the stone age is pretty much the same as the Feeders of Vaal from The Apple, aside from their environment being in a peaceful ice age instead of a tropical minefield. This episode also provides a good excuse for what seems to possibly be a huge shift in how the team is writing Spock, if his motormouth excitations in the coda were anything to go by. He even thanks McCoy for putting his brain back in! This, just 2 episodes after he mockingly said it to the doctor in "Bread & Circuses" while they were trapped in their cell without Kirk.

did they like....dig the mobile emitter back out of One's brain to get it back? that's grim but I guess I can see the Doctor demanding they let him do that.
