And aside from the fact that "wholesome" is you preference and not an actual inidcator of good yuri, there are still hundreds of fluff pieces to drown in on the JP side. People just get tired of it and want something more extreme on occasion. Japanese yuri has been around for so long that it needs works that shake things up on occasion.

And even then some of the most successful yuri manga of the recent years are stuff like Whishper Me a Love Song (wholesome). The biggest yuri thing thing in anime this year was Cosmic Princess Kaguya which is obssessed with undooming doomed yuri. Light Novels? A yuri harem comedy like Watanare or Buying My Classmate for 5000 yen a Week (sort of toxic, but also about healing two fundamentally broken girls).
And if we bring it back to games/VNs, the upcoming WataMari is just pure cute couple core. Magical Princess was totally full of wholesome yuri (it's idea of an "evil" daughter is her being slightly naughty). VampBride was full of old-school one-true-binding-love autism.
Sure you got some more psychological or weird stuff like Crymelight coming up or Monophobia coming up, but those have flavor.

Unlike the actual retard, I do not believe all chink yuri to be bad, but the margin is very skewed. And chinks absolutely have zero focus on "purity" in their yuri. Way too many of their stories are about bisluts who changed from marrying some guy who turned out to be a bastard to a woman.
Japs definitely make a lot of bad stuff too, but the most popular yuri works are pretty much still the gold standard.

Honestly, I was fucking recommending Blood of Caro, but there always has to be some idiot who has to immediately become a chink praise bot the moment anything halfway decent comes out of that circle.

There isn't really any explicit yuri. You can unlock a female playable protag who is a lesbian. She can have a female side-kick and some encounters are different because she is a lesbian, but it's really not yuri by itself. More like, easily goggable? This is somewhat more common in JP/CN/KR translations towards each other, because their writing systems are similar. Japanese and Chinese are not that different, so many writing tricks work similarly in both directions and can be translated more easily.
English on the other hand is not very compatible with these languages to begin with and no system that doesn't have characters that can represent whole sentences will ever perfectly capture it.

I played the demo for the Guiding Spirit. It's that game where you customise a party and then send them on an adventure with a variety of events and paths. It's basically a one person D&D campaign.

First of all, character customisation is crazy detailed. And that's for the best, considering you mostly don't control the characters and they have to be interesting on their own. You can pick sex, appearance and even sexual attraction right off the bat.
There are so many traits and stats to choose from that it borders on overwhelming, but backstories, core memories and goals are still a bit limited (around 15 each, with some secret ones depending on class and race). But the dev said they have been adding more and more as development goes on, so the full game should have a bunch more.

The demo is pretty short, but it gave me a decent idea of how it would work. I think the automated interactions work pretty well. You still roll dice, but your only infuence is if you as the Guiding Spirit give certain party members stat boosts. And at some intersections you can pick who will do what or split up etc.
I tried a party of 6, which is a lot. One of the ladies barely got any scenes or reactions (though I did make her stoic), while others got a lot more attentio. The girl who's a halfling equivalent immediately started fliritng with the lizard lady mercenary in my party, which was fun. Of course it didnt go anywhere in the two chapters of the demo.

You can absolutely fail the adventure. Party members can die and they can fuck each other up, depending on their traits. If you make a lunatic who craves violence, they aren't gonna be very stable, shocker.
While there is also a difficulty selection it pretty much just decides your dice bonus during dice throws. Mostly how difficult the game is has a meter that takes into consideration the traits of your party. If you only got badly stat spread ranged fighters, you aren't gonna do well in combat.

One interesting interaction was my uh... "pyromancer" who I gave a phobia of darkness. She freaked out in the tutorial dungeon, so my helpful bard held her hand through the whole dungeon so she would calm down.

Right now you can only pick one negative trait in every category, so maybe it's balanced. I think total freedom would just make a lot of people pick endless super good traits.
That being said there are neutral ones too that just add flavor.

Picking stuff like the archaic speech quirk still cause some issues. The dialogue was really bad and broken, because the dev clearly just told the text to replace normal words with archaic ones and it doesn't work too well. But the dev is aware and trying to fix the dialogue issues.

The first aventure (aka the 1.0 version of the game) is supposed to be finished this year, but they intend to add several more over time. With the framework they created you could theoretically have infinite kinds of adventures. Maybe this would be a good foundation for modding. Make custom user adventures, similar to CYOA engines.

I was shocked to see that the only Elder Scrolls game with an extensive mod section was Daggerfall. I mean no judgement, that's pretty cool. But I took the liberty of giving Skyrim the same treatment, because let's face it, no matter how mid it is as a game, the modding community made it pretty amazing.

Serana Voice Add-on: The name is too basic to describe how big this mod is. Serana is the most in-depth companion after you apply this mod and the romance is stellar

Rune Factory 3 Special finally got a playable female character mod so there's a yuri way to play now. The mod swaps Shara and Micah so technically their het romance left intact but that still leaves 10 bachelorettes to pick from.

yeah RF3 doesn't seem to hold the same reverence as RF4 does within the community so maybe that's why modding scene has been pretty non existent. I remember when RF4S came out and people were modding in gay romances within a week, but it was probably much much easier to just be switching the male and female protags around for that. Where as with RF3 you'd have to make a new model and sprite or do as this mod has done and switch an NPC into the role, but lose her romance in the process.

Interestingly the person who documented the modding tools back in the day does actually have a sprite mod for a custom female protag but there's no dialogue updates with it.

Interesting. So many mechanics and ideas are super obviously copied from Volcano Princess. This may very well be the most direct inspiration I've seen yet.
But there are also some refreshing new ideas. Like having to decide on how to cash out allowances, setting curfews which influence how long the daughter can be outside and do things and so on. As you mostly play the daughter, you would want to give yourself as much as possible. But as a parent these choices can have some bad consequences. Really makes you feel both sides of the coin, unlike in VP or Matgical Princess.

This stood out to me too, because it literally never happens anywhere else. All pronouns are extremely accurate and consistent.
This leaves me with 2 theories:
1. This is intentional. Maybe Xie pretended to be a man when she was the military advisor. She has a slightly androgynous look, and this newspaper is written by official outside sources who might not know her true sex.
2. Whoever translated that paper might have translated this before they knew that Xie is a woman and they haven't fixed this yet, because there are mountains of text as is.

They definitely have, but not the free versions. Only commercial models with quite a bit more power have actually been getting better. As cursed as Youtube's auto-dubbing feature sounds, it is still quite impressive how well it manages to translate the spoken word in so many languages.
And google translate/deepL are fairly reliable these days too, so some free software is usable.

Nope. I also read the English version of the fanfic first. I was doing it specifically to test the accuracy. Considering it was translated to Chinese by a human first and then back to English by google, it's impressive how accurate it was. It only got a couple subject/object mix-ups in 100+ pages.
