And aside from the fact that "wholesome" is you preference and not an actual inidcator of good yuri, there are still hundreds of fluff pieces to drown in on the JP side. People just get tired of it and want something more extreme on occasion. Japanese yuri has been around for so long that it needs works that shake things up on occasion.

And even then some of the most successful yuri manga of the recent years are stuff like Whishper Me a Love Song (wholesome). The biggest yuri thing thing in anime this year was Cosmic Princess Kaguya which is obssessed with undooming doomed yuri. Light Novels? A yuri harem comedy like Watanare or Buying My Classmate for 5000 yen a Week (sort of toxic, but also about healing two fundamentally broken girls).
And if we bring it back to games/VNs, the upcoming WataMari is just pure cute couple core. Magical Princess was totally full of wholesome yuri (it's idea of an "evil" daughter is her being slightly naughty). VampBride was full of old-school one-true-binding-love autism.
Sure you got some more psychological or weird stuff like Crymelight coming up or Monophobia coming up, but those have flavor.

This is somewhat more common in JP/CN/KR translations towards each other, because their writing systems are similar. Japanese and Chinese are not that different, so many writing tricks work similarly in both directions and can be translated more easily.
English on the other hand is not very compatible with these languages to begin with and no system that doesn't have characters that can represent whole sentences will ever perfectly capture it.

I played the demo for the Guiding Spirit. It's that game where you customise a party and then send them on an adventure with a variety of events and paths. It's basically a one person D&D campaign.

First of all, character customisation is crazy detailed. And that's for the best, considering you mostly don't control the characters and they have to be interesting on their own. You can pick sex, appearance and even sexual attraction right off the bat.
There are so many traits and stats to choose from that it borders on overwhelming, but backstories, core memories and goals are still a bit limited (around 15 each, with some secret ones depending on class and race). But the dev said they have been adding more and more as development goes on, so the full game should have a bunch more.

The demo is pretty short, but it gave me a decent idea of how it would work. I think the automated interactions work pretty well. You still roll dice, but your only infuence is if you as the Guiding Spirit give certain party members stat boosts. And at some intersections you can pick who will do what or split up etc.
I tried a party of 6, which is a lot. One of the ladies barely got any scenes or reactions (though I did make her stoic), while others got a lot more attentio. The girl who's a halfling equivalent immediately started fliritng with the lizard lady mercenary in my party, which was fun. Of course it didnt go anywhere in the two chapters of the demo.

You can absolutely fail the adventure. Party members can die and they can fuck each other up, depending on their traits. If you make a lunatic who craves violence, they aren't gonna be very stable, shocker.
While there is also a difficulty selection it pretty much just decides your dice bonus during dice throws. Mostly how difficult the game is has a meter that takes into consideration the traits of your party. If you only got badly stat spread ranged fighters, you aren't gonna do well in combat.

One interesting interaction was my uh... "pyromancer" who I gave a phobia of darkness. She freaked out in the tutorial dungeon, so my helpful bard held her hand through the whole dungeon so she would calm down.

Right now you can only pick one negative trait in every category, so maybe it's balanced. I think total freedom would just make a lot of people pick endless super good traits.
That being said there are neutral ones too that just add flavor.

Picking stuff like the archaic speech quirk still cause some issues. The dialogue was really bad and broken, because the dev clearly just told the text to replace normal words with archaic ones and it doesn't work too well. But the dev is aware and trying to fix the dialogue issues.

The first aventure (aka the 1.0 version of the game) is supposed to be finished this year, but they intend to add several more over time. With the framework they created you could theoretically have infinite kinds of adventures. Maybe this would be a good foundation for modding. Make custom user adventures, similar to CYOA engines.

yeah RF3 doesn't seem to hold the same reverence as RF4 does within the community so maybe that's why modding scene has been pretty non existent. Interesting. So many mechanics and ideas are super obviously copied from Volcano Princess. This may very well be the most direct inspiration I've seen yet.
But there are also some refreshing new ideas. Like having to decide on how to cash out allowances, setting curfews which influence how long the daughter can be outside and do things and so on. As you mostly play the daughter, you would want to give yourself as much as possible. But as a parent these choices can have some bad consequences. Really makes you feel both sides of the coin, unlike in VP or Matgical Princess.

This leaves me with 2 theories:
1. This is intentional. Maybe Xie pretended to be a man when she was the military advisor. She has a slightly androgynous look, and this newspaper is written by official outside sources who might not know her true sex.
2. Whoever translated that paper might have translated this before they knew that Xie is a woman and they haven't fixed this yet, because there are mountains of text as is.

They definitely have, but not the free versions. Only commercial models with quite a bit more power have actually been getting better. As cursed as Youtube's auto-dubbing feature sounds, it is still quite impressive how well it manages to translate the spoken word in so many languages.
And google translate/deepL are fairly reliable these days too, so some free software is usable.

Okay, here is the second proper female love interest in Fairy Princess. Lan Qingyan. And I gotta say, Yue is cute and all, but Lan here really got my attention. Pic realted is their FIRST meeting and she already has such a yandere level attachment to Riri (the daugher).

I like the tribal setting and how she is much more direct about everything than the general Chinese polite society coded cast, but she is seriously crazy. The first thing she does is poison every single student who insulted her and only gives Riri the antidote bug wine.
The absolute madness of that is slightly undercut when the vice-principal comically puts her into detention for that, but still, what an entrance!

Looks like there will be three male and three female main love interests from the way the menu works. They don't really have a tab for platonic aquaintances and you can't level up their affection like you could in Volcano Princess. So this is a lot closer to Magical Princess where only real love interests got prefence and affection menus.

The most you really influence is using your Gurdian Spirit points to give party members dice boosts. You earn these if you party accomplishes things. You also get occasional choices of who does what and how to split up the party. That's about it in the demo.

However, the dev has taken in feedback about giving the player more opportunities to make choices. I read they want to integrate this via characters getting orders from their specific deities (every character has to choose a god, though I think there is meant to be an anti-religious trait).

But you absolutely do want to replay it. That's kinda the game's appeal, testing out different parties and seeing different outcomes and paths from the way they interact.

It is hard enough to find a Chinese game with a halfway decent and coherent translation, but Fairy Princess writing has AMBITION. It is super poetry focused and full of very archaic terms. So the fact that they not only translate poems, but make them actually sounds like real poems in English is beyond impressive. Whoever is translating this must be fluent in English literature. No MTL could ever reach this level of sophistcation.

Had to actually look that up. Learned a new word today.
Agreed, the game is really ambitious with the word count. Poetry, literature, newspaper articles (!), background stories that get unlocked and those little speech bubbles popping up around the town from the villagers. It keeps the story engaging, interesting and worthwhile to uncover. I absolutely adore the daughters calligraphy lessons and how her writing skill improves over time. Or the drawings she comes up with. If it at some point you unlock one of her drawings where she painted a picture of only herself with her very favourite person which is obviously Yue then I will happily die of a preciousattack. Sadly some things got missed in the translation. I remember one tutorial prompt not being fully translated and this one.
Nonetheless, Yue is no scaredy-cat. She is cultivating inner strength and that's why is she is a much better fiancee for my daughter. I bet Qingyan is much more milkytoasty.

Here we go. As promised, I reached the final female love interest in Fairy Princess. That is one hell of a gorgeous introduction too!
Lady Ephemera. She is clearly not a normal human. That's the character who I assumed was a "guardian spirit" from the trailer. She is seriously mommy-coded... She is already an adult right away which makes things a bit more complicated, considering her bio states she is over 1000 years old.
There is also the fact that her inner monologue kinda implies that she knew the daughter's previous reincarnations. So she probably has affection for her carried over from her past lives. She calls the daughter "Dawnplume".

Quingyan has some actual competition now.

Thanks! I had a some time today so I looked to see if there's been any other new mods for the big farming sims. The main thing I came across was that the 3DS version of Story of Seasons now has a dialogue mod that can be used alongside the original model swap mod, giving it the complete experience. Mod author said it's not fully tested so it might be rough in places but I didn't run into any issues while playing for a few hours so I've added to the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons section of the public mod list.

Cute Bite (while a servant raising her vampire mistress is super cool, the actual game has little to hold interest)
Growing Up (it's fine. Just ugly though)

Whimel Academy (100% wasted premise for such a nothing game)

So it's one of the most unique concepts. A lesbian vampire starts a relationship with a saintess. But homosexuality bad says the church, thus saintess gets punished and kills herself. Vampire protag swears to revive her, but the leader of the church already took her girlfriend's soul and stole the book with the revival spell.
So vampire protag goes out and kidnaps royal family members from all over the continent (only female ones) and then sexually tortures them until she extracts all info about their secrets and the church out of them. Makes them into sex slaves which either serve her or can be sold for gold if you deveolop them well (this is the raising sim aspect).

So the whole game is about lesbian revenge against the church and royals and only features lesbian sex. What's the catch?
Well the game just can't help itself and had to add futanari stuff. Not that all of it is futa, but a major mechanic is locked behind it and there are unavoidable events where vampire protag fucks her vampire servant and so on.

That's why it's disappointing. It genuinely could have been a yuri experience that you can't get anywhere else.

The Eiland sprite... somehow feels off a little. I can't put my finger on it. I think it's the head size? But it's basically the same physique. So male Eiland might have just looked weird by default.

-March Dialogue Expansion. Adds 400+ lines for March being tsundere towards the farmer. Has a comaptibility mod with Butch March, so the female pronouns are kept intact
-Milk of Mistria... this is a coomer mod for sure. Adds a questline where you help Juniper find some mysterious liquid. If you spray it on adult villager she will start lactating and needs to be milked regularly. Adds a lot of milking events that adjust to your relationship status too. It's totally optional even if you install it, because you decide whether you spray anyone with the mystery juice... It's just a cute little mod for people who want some spicy stuff in the game. If you just use it on your fav bachelorette/wife then it's less intrusive

Two options:
1) Director kept being told to do things he didn't want to by higher ups and eventually got frustrated. Development hell could be explained by this constant clashing and the fact that it releases so soon after the director "resigned" could means the higher ups got what they wanted.
2) The director wanted to keep adding or changing things and the publisher got really fed up with the delays. Director was forcefully "resigned" to stop him blocking progress, so they switched publisher and try to salvage the game with what they have.

By definition, as this is the only sub-series with proper yuri. I still recommend playing the original PSP game first, because it is timeless and it has a sequel that was in the same style, so the jump between the remake and CCC might be awkward.

Marvelous x Xseed publisher sale. All the Story of Seasons, Rune Factory games. Potionomics too. And Fate/Extella. It's a treasure trove for yuri.

If you had told me 10 years ago Marvelous and Xseed would be a well of yuri games I'd have been confused. I just knew them as the yuribait publisher (Senran Kagura, Corpse Party etc.). Time be a'changin'.

Last time it was raising sims, this time I ranked farming sims. I only picked those with yuri or yuri mods. And even then I skipped some real gutter trash. This genre is bloated as hell and 3 new ones come out every month.

Honestly considering what time sinks this genre has, you will probably be fed for years with just the games in the highest tier. You probably don't need anything else.

Another more detailed look at Extra Record. The card gameplay reminds me a lot of Slay the Spire, but with a deck you can actually keep and construct yourself.
Designs are generally pretty faithful to the original, but for some reason Rin and Rani got some really heavy outfit changes. And Ronald McDonald got a complete redesign.
They replaced Aoko and Touko with Alice from Mahoutsukai it seems...
For some reason Ciel is now the caeteria lady.
Graphics, music and level design are very good. There is so much more emoting and the L2D portraits are smoother.

The fact that they put so much focus on Hakuno's VAs makes me hope that there will be more voice acting for Hakunon, even if it's just her voicing the choice lines and saying some cool stuff in combat.

It still annoys me that they seem to be contractually obligated to always show Tamamo with Malekuno, considering they showed Hakunon with both Nero and Archer, but not fox wife (in the 90% Hakunon trailer we did see Tamamo and Hakunon together.

I am waiting for the other shoe to drop and all the new additions that will actually be significantly different though. This is a Type-Moon remake, they literally cannot be 1:1 accurate, they have to change something significant.

I really wonder how the power progression will work and how railroaded you will be in deck construction, hopefully you can build a deck with a decent direction rather early in the game instead of relying on basics for long.
While each character has its own playstyle, I hope I hope card option will not be too narrow and allow you some creativity.

I also wonder how they will translate the investigation phase and how it will tie to gameplay advantage if any, maybe being able to know what card the enemy servant have in the deck ?
The game looks great in the video I hope it's actually great and stick the distance. The production issues can't help but make me think it might be just smoke and mirrors.

Considering the original game literally only had basic moves with like 4 special skills and an ult and still was decently fun, I think having a full on deck system should work just fine. I am more worried about the fact that you are reliant on having a good draw, which maybe you could equate to having to be lucky with the right rock-paper-scissor prediction in the OG, but at least there chances were always 1 in 3.
Imagine you brick your hand in a boss fight because you simply aren't drawing the move you need. The special moves in the original were only limited by your Mana and always available (minus the Noble Phantasm of course). In many cases spamming skills just to get through unknown attack patterns was a valid strategy.
This also brings me to the upgrade mechanic. In the OG you leveled up the Servant's stats directly. But if it's all cards now, you won't need that. Takes away a lot of the charme, because raising a Servant's stats from F-EX is a lot more significant in the Fate universe.
Now instead Alice from Mahoutsukai will help you level up cards it seems.

I am sure there will be benefits beyond the plot to uncovering Servant identities. It's actually way more interesting with a card system. Revealing enemy cards, upgrading your own cards temporarily, letting you draw more or delete one of their hand cards etc. Imagine you figure out Robin Hood's identity and now his poison cards cost twice as much or last fewer turns.

At this point we have seen so much that it's hard to pinpoint what could go wrong, outside of massive performance issues. They might fuck up the story, because Type-Moon cannot make remakes without changing almost everything about the original. So the faithfulness we see right now might be the director's influence. MM is not only the first mainline HM game to feature a selectable female protag, it also is a classic that still holds up today. They clearly tried pretty hard to accomodate female players too, even if it was still too early to have yuri in the series (the yuri mod for MM is pretty good though).
Like it's not revolutionary or innovative per se and it isn't an All Time Great one either, but I'd say it has heart. I still like it better than Winds of Anthos, despite the latter featuring yuri by default.
