SotN doesn't really do anything new other than introduce a bunch of poorly implemented RPG stat nonsense that almost no metroidvanias copied - all it did was create the precedent that Metroid doesn't have a monopoly on the gameplay style and that it's now a genre and not just a singular franchise.
Metroidvania was a perfectly good way to describe these games until people insisted that Hollow Knight not only was one but was the best one. Now it's just a fancy word for a side scrolling action adventure.
