You can freely swap your character before embarking on a mission, as easily as changing your weapon in MonHun.Admittedly, by the time you reach endgame, most characters will have pretty similar builds, since the stuff that's good is pretty universal (the buffs I mentioned above are worth putting on every character, for instance), so you probably won't be tailoring your loadout for each specific fight. It's more of a question of whether you want to use the fast-but-weak or slow-but-strong character, and if you want melee, range, or support.The main story has a bit of cinematic stuff in it, but I don't recall it being that egregious.I should mention, however, that most bosses have cinematic super attacks that force you to dodge for a while, like in an MMO. I figure this might be a dealbreaker for you, so I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention it.I can link you some videos that are light on spoilers if you want an example.

If you're playing online, you only need to worry about one character: the one you're controlling.
