There was a clear shift in design philosophy around the 7th gen.
Look at Wii commercials at the time for an example. You don't really see the stereotypical "gamer" archetype anymore and instead see soccer moms and their families playing the games.
This type of design philosophy requires making extremely bland and watered down products that everyone finds "okay", as opposed to taking a risk that only some people might find great.

This. There is a clear shift in targeted demographics.
The technology is also at a point where everything is possible so developers don't have to think around problems creating unique solutions in the process.
