I played through the whole campaign on hard with the 5.5 patch. It's generally a fun time. The biggest improvement is that the AI takes much less time to take turns, base game is almost unplayable in that regard. There are a handful of obnoxiously difficult missions, mostly in the orc expansion, but I think they were annoying pre-patch too.
Don't know about multiplayer but I think it's just Russians playing that nowadays

I'll tell my friend about it because the last time we were pretty bothered by how long the AI took, and while they played their fucking infinite turns you hear the town music on loop which is annoying

It's a meme. The AI is turned to 11 and you need to have competitive skills to beat it. Turns the game from comfy into a sweaty shitshow.

Be aware that the changed AI in the mod screws over some of the campaign missions. Particularly anything where the AI isn't supposed to free roam, so missions with predetermined patrolling routes and stuff like that.
And I think same goes for couple mission where the combat relies on some gimmick, the AI will start targetting different units and such.
