That was not an original feature in the game. It was planned as a melee weapon but was eventually scrapped before launch. Maybe it was going to even be rideable at one point, who knows?

This is why I like 6th gen games so much. They always tried to have a shitload of variety. Think of all the different gameplay styles in the Sonic Adventure games, or all the vehicle sections in Jak and Ratchet games. Pure soul.
