Lies of P is honestly the best souls-like to come out the past 10 years. It even beats Stellar Blade - just barely, though.

lies of p clears stellar blade easily. It's level design is much better and you have many different builds you can run to mix things up

I really like the level design too, except the part leading up to the boxing boss. It felt like it there should have been a stargazer amongst the humans that used guns.

They both approach the genre so differently and I almost disagreed but I loved Lies of P specifically for its level design. I liked the open areas of Stellar Blade as well as their linear, puzzle focused 'dungeons'

Linear world design is not bad. If you don't like that style of game then that's fine but for me, that is not a negative in LoP and DaS3 because the levels themselves are good. I don't know what's considered a "real souls fan" but I've been playing all of From's action RPGs since DeS (PS3) and have enjoyed every single one of them. I can say that LoP was definitely good and a lot better than I was expecting.
>>
>>682888071
>>682888175
I'm not saying you can't replay the game, or even that the game is bad for being linear. However, it is objectively worse for being linear because it's at odds with the games genre of being an ARPG, where player agency is the whole point.
>>
my only complaint is that some of the larger miniboss style enemies only appear a handful of times in the game which is a shame because they were much more fun to fight

Also I'd like to add that Lies of P is NOT Ninja Gaiden, DMC, or Bayonetta. The combat is completely reactive and there is nothing about the combat that one can even master to begin with, what you master are the timings of individual moves bosses throw at you.
This reason this is important is because it increases the burden of the 'RPG' part of ARPG to carry the experience. Dark Souls, which also has simplistic combat, realized this and made up for it sufficiently via giving the player more non-combat freedom.
>>
>>682888547
the whole point of an arpg is to sprinkle rpg mechanics onto an action game, and that's it. stop making shit up.
>>
I watched my friend play this for 10 minutes and the roll animation is so dogshit I don't think I could pick it up
>>
>>682889092
>Action game = player expression via combat complexity
>RPG = player expression via build/part composition choices
>ARPG = (you know this one)

>>682888945
>>
>>682887447
I think the end credits scene is just to show they plan on doing more games in the setting based on other fairytales
>>
>>682888547
How is a game worse for taking the route of having a clear order that you do the levels in? The game has a narrative and it only makes sense to do the levels in the way they're laid out. I replayed the game after clearing it once in order to get the true ending. I did NG+ and carried all my stuff over, thus having late weapons carry over and usable from the beginning. The way you say it's "at odds with the game genre being an action RPG" is confusing because that implies that there's some sort of fixed rule-book on game design. An action RPG can be linear, open world, or whatever the creator wants really. If you can only enjoy games that let you do the levels in whatever order you want then that's fine I guess but nothing is "objectively" worse here. It's just not the style of game you like, that's it.
>>
>>682889198

>The game has a narrative
In video games, the narrative serves the gameplay and not the other way around. The narrative could easily be changed to fit a non-linear world layout.
>Implies that there's some sort of fixed rule-book on game design.
ARPG has a set-in-stone meaning with straightforward unchanging objectives.
>An action RPG can be linear, open world, or whatever the creator wants really.

It's always amusing to me that soulsfags scream about the linearity of the maps (this goes for Nioh and SoP as well) as if it's objectively wrong instead of it just being a design choice of the developer
>>
Good:
Nameless Puppet and King of Puppets are fantastic
The record system being the most shockingly high-soul music system since Far Cry 5's triple album
Core combat very satisfying, WAY better implementation of non-R1-spam combat mechanics than Sekiro or ER
Thematically I don't like the blade-handle system but it makes for some very cool possibilities
Bad:
A lot of the moves feel like cheesing is the correct way to play, from Romeo's "Fable art to stun me out of my combo windup" to how most of the major combos can be outranged by link dodging backwards twice
The FF13 of Souls games, linear to a fault
Ignoring linearity, the level design is REALLY uninspired
Awful weapon variety for Advance builds
Jank translation, not quite engrish but very awkward sounding writing and dialogue which is a shame
Outside of Romeo and Nameless Puppet the puppet theme fell totally flat for me. Probably looked a lot cooler in the concept art, didn't lean hard enough into the horror
The Petrification Disease zombies fell REALLY flat, holy fuck they're so lame and not cool
Gold Coin Fruit and the Wishstone mechanic is just total dogshit, nobody interacts with it
Game is generally too easy probably because they didn't intend for rolls to have as many iframes as they do in-dev (Parade Master demo v release game is night and day boss difficulty)
>>

What could be changed about the level design to make it more inspired?

Am I bad if I use a summon when the boss has a second phase? I beat the archbishop's first phase and had a sigh of relief, until that snaky bastard came out of his arse. And the looping back and the shortcuts are completely fucking useless. Unless you are going to be doing a farming loop the looping back is purely superficial and adds no actual depth to the level design. The shortcuts also are a solution looking for a problem in the game, since they exist so there are fewer stargazers to act as obvious check points, instead letting the shortcut be the obvious check point.

Neither the looping or the shortcuts serve the purpose they would in a non-linear level design, which is to allow the player to reach different parts of the world in interesting ways. The developers clearly realized this later, as more stargazers were just plopped down like check points as opposed to using shortcuts to serve that purpose. Christ, even CoD had levels that looped back, but no one would ever dare to suggest that it made the level design less linear.

Don't let your enjoyment of a thing blind you to, and exuse its obvious flaws.

I started playing this last week, I just got to the 2nd part of Barren Swamp. It's really fun so far, perfect guard timing is pretty unforgiving but it's satisfying as fuck to pull off. Best boss so far was Romeo King of Puppets and the worst was definitely Fuoco because he wouldn't stop spamming his fire attacks. Started as a technique build but swapped over to Advance recently.

NGL dark souls 1 is still the only game in the series with actual flow and thought put into level design. Later games are just linear tours to the next boss.
Bloodborne is probably closest to recreating it, and ER tries to while failing miserably.

Demon's Souls had much better level design though. Also Dark Souls has terrible flow because the quality is all over the place, the latter half has some appallingly bad zones, and there is constant backtracking to the opposite side of the world to multiple specific vendors, blacksmiths, or quest NPCs (this was especially egregious in 1.00)

I unironically think Lies of P is better than Dark Souls 2 and 3. It's nowhere near as good as Sekiro, BB, and DeS, and I think Elden Ring clears it just from an artistic direction/production quality standpoint. But I personally enjoy Lies of P much more than Elden Ring because it's short and sweet, not bloated at all with collecting nonsense and open world/copy paste.

It's a really good game, by far the best soulslike. I think most soulslikes feel way too jank or try to be way too different in ways that make them feel bad to play. More importantly, most soulslikes just feel like they completely miss the point of what makes Souls good (artistic direction, good level design, interesting and varied builds/gear, different ways to play) whereas Lies of P genuinely excels in all of these ways.

Probably my favorite surprise hit of 2023, and one of my favorite games in recent years for sure. I've beaten it 3 times now and loved every run

Probably because this.
It's the same reason why Dark Souls III onward have been excessively trashed.

The more games that are built on BB's legacy which are multi-plat, the less /v/ cares about BB. Enjoying games and not being mad Bloodborne makes them upset. Ps5 has nothing that /v/ wants, they can't get their fix so they have to feign tortanic over and over again.

the biggest weakness this game has, aside from occasionally awful telegraphing and overuse of delayed attacks, is its OST.

almost anything aside from the Hotel Krat theme is very forgettable. You don't need to copy recent Souls games to this degree.

I’m liking it a lot, I maining a Booster Glave Handle + Pick Axe Head for the the Charged R2 and the honestly just the visual of the head, there might be something better, I don’t know.
My main problem is the obvious linearity, the fact that literally every side track leads only to some lot and maybe a mini-boss is sad. I was expecting something more akin to Bloodborne, where you can stumble into a whole new area basically everywhere.
Also can’t figure out the timing of the Katana at all, but I’m maybe overthinking it.

If Sekiro was a problem Lies of P will be worse.
Endgame bosses are on par with Shadow of the Tree difficulty.
Perfect Deflect/Parry window is smaller than Sekiro's.
I can pop into Sekiro and manhandle SSI drunk at any time, but Lies of P bosses and their goofy zero windup swings are a nightmare.

And if you don't perfect deflect you take weapon damage and have to repair your weapon in combat.

I'd put it over DS3 and Wo Long, but under Sekiro, BB, and Elden Ring.
