>>683600736I have no idea why games didn't follow pokemon's model of just having grass with random mobs, basically voluntary grinding. But all of that was a different era, we were younguns with heaps of time yet few games, people were okay with 50~100h JRPGs even if half of it was grinding. Modern JRPG-inspired games handle things better, usually there are no/little random encounters, you can see them all beforehand and can backtrack before they respawn.

>>683601398I know they are good, especially considering how shit other adaptations are. Like the Wheel of Time netflix one. But cutting Tom just massively screwed up the sense of the adventure for me, since they just decided to leave the Shire and basically immediately afterwards meet Aragorn. Plus I always liked how Tom made the world feel bigger, because while the ring is important, there are still beings that do not care about it. And he is pretty intriguing, since he is such an enigma while being a jolly fellow. But maybe after all these years, I'm able to let go of this and see it as a separate entity instead of comparing it to the books.

I thought the ASM schedule was bad, but so far the ESA schedule been worse.
>>683602341>>683602487also people always say 'well why didn't they just xyz if they could abc'the point was that it was beyond hopeless since the beginning of any of the stories, the elves were eternally doomed to never defeat Melkor, and there was virtually no hope for men to beat Sauron. It's only due to valar intervention that anything works out and even then it's by the skin of their teeth and great/unexpected deeds by the small and seemingly unexceptional people

Tolkien constantly makes it a point that one's spirit mattersHe was also pissed off when he predicted that the twist in some shakespeare work (i'm a pleb) didn't turn out how he predicted, so he wrote it into LOTR that the 'no living man will slay me' prophecy had a loophole.also >>683602794

>even the ice cream guy leftowari da...
>>683602038>the war for the ring in the grand scheme of things is a historical footnoteYeah I know, but almost every character in the story is pretty concerned about it. It makes sense that is so, because that is what the books are about. But Tom easily established early on that there are forces that do not care about the ring. The other characters that also don't care show up latter. And either end up as antagonist so are still impacting the journey like the Balrog, or still end up helping the fellowship like the ents. Tom is the only character that says have fun on your journey, but I'm staying home. And even have the council discuss how involving Tom would be a bad idea, since he will just not care about the ring itself. That is why I really like him being there, it makes the world deeper instead of just being a stated fact that it's a footnote>>683602603Yeah, to me it just adds so much to the world itself. It is just not a story about the ring, but it makes it feel like its a living world with various powers and factions in it. Especially since he lives pretty close to the hobbit's home, sort of adding to how sheltered the hobbits are. I get why he got cut in the movie, just like why they didn't include the scouring of the Shire. But it does detract from worldbuilding itself, plus it would have been fun to have included him in the extended cut just to see him sing and dance.

Sauronman also was punished by being eternally banished/imprisoned when he died. the maiar are supposed to dwell eternally in valinor (eternal bliss/heaven) but he forfeited that right.
>>683603207it seems it doesn't look half bad honestly
>>683603287Yeah, because she is written like a character instead of written like a statement how women are better than men. So you're empathize with the character instead of the scene trying to make you feel ashamed for being a man.

>>683603208as i warned i'm a pleb, shakespeare just doesn't do it for me and i'll admit it.i do remember it now i think, wasn't the prophecy that someone important wouldn't die 'by the hands of one born from a woman' but they were born from a c-section which created the loophole?
>>683603287She earns that moment 100% in the film. She's scared to die, loses her father immediately afterwards and fights for her friends. Now if she was #GirlBossing all over the fellowship and DESTROYING their preconceived notions about what a warrior can be and essentially winking at camera I'd release a de-Éowynized version of the movie myself.

>sound alert didn't even play to isengard Good morning I hate planks

This game was so cool for me as a kid, literally perfectly replicates the atmosphere of the movies, the movie studio and crew worked closely with game studios giving them access to the props and assets and even got all the movie actors to do the voice acting. That shit never happens anymore.

>>683603754>God I wish I could pound this into the head of every modern show writerYeah, modern writers are fucking stupid. Just make cool and interesting characters and people will like them. People don't mind Éowyn, but hate Galadriel in Rings of Power. CJ from SA is beloved, but people complain about Yasuke because he is chosen just as a statement. I have never seen anyone complain about Arcade from FNV being gay, yet modern writers now just make stereotypical faggots. The best example is probably the Wheels of Time series. The books make a statement that man and woman may be different, but each needs the other. While the tv series just completely ignores that to push their strong women
>>683604157The gamer girls trapped and betrayed esa
>>683604330the elves also indiscriminately hunted the dwarves when they first found them, the dwarves then murdered a high-tier elven king named Thingol when he requested that the implant one of the Silmarils into a necklace he had them craft.that said, the dwarves and elves never would have been successful/prosperous as they were without the trade routes and alliances they formed despite the animosity. the dwarves also sacrificed themselves and their king to save both elves and men in one of the pivotal battles against Morgoth.
>>683603836Honestly, the best thing about watching speedruns with /v/ is having an excuse to discuss stuff related to the run. Making a thread about some obscure and old game wouldn't really survive on modern /v/, but is perfect for these runs

>>683604953>made by an impatient Ainur before even the elves.it's a really cool part of the story, Aule basically intercedes in the grand plan of Eru by creating the dwarves prematurely, he appeals to Eru and begs forgiveness. He even attempts to smite his own creation in repentance to which the dwarves cower in fear, Eru stays his hand and proclaims that he himself gave them life/sentience or else they wouldn't feel fear at all as Aule didn't have the ability to bestow awareness in his creations.as a caveat, they were sentenced to remain in hibernation until after the elves were created.
>>683604953What's also pretty cool is that Aule made a mistake in creating the dwarves, since he wasn't God himself he could not imbue them with true lifeSo what he created were effectively automatons, that appeared to be alive as long as Aule focused his attention and power on them, but otherwise were just puppetsHe was overcome with grief when he learned of his mistake and tried to undo his cursed creation, but then Eru seeing Aule's genuine remorse and the good intention behind it instead imbued the dwarves with true life, with the only condition being that they would be made to sleep and only awake after the Elves had awokenThat's what the scene depicts, and how Aule learns of what Eru did: the dwarves instead of awaiting their fate as puppets would have recoiled before the hammer strike

I don't remember Moria being this short.
This run feels like Stream 2
Aule's tale with the Dwarves is also meant to contrast him with MelkorBoth went against the apparent wishes of Eru, both inserted something notable into creation of their own design, out of impatience, prideThe key difference being one of them sought to atone for it and the other did not, and to showcase that Eru had already accounted for the Valar doing so, as both the Dwarves and the concepts of Heat and Cold (latter being Melkor's design) could fit into reality seamlessly and only made it grander and more beautiful But the outcomes for either Valar was different, Aule remained in god's grace and got to watch the Dwarves grow and carve out their own paths, while Melkor succumbed to darkness and never got to appreciate the beauty Heat and Cold had on the world
>check twitch follows>stream 2 is on, I'm saved>it's a mirror of stream 1end my suffering
>>683605429>>683605428Kek thanks for the rundown loregods. > Eru stays his hand and proclaims that he himself gave them life/sentience or else they wouldn't feel fear at all as Aule didn't have the ability to bestow awareness in his creations.>and how Aule learns of what Eru did: the dwarves instead of awaiting their fate as puppets would have recoiled before the hammer strikeMan that is a kino scene, knowing that background now. I didn't really care for the dwarves before, but that completely changed now. Love how Aule fucked up, repents and then during that attempt learns he has been forgiven. Really has those old testament vibes.
this is basically final fantasy x with bows
That's horrifying
>>683606010>Really has those old testament vibes.Well Eru was supposed to be God, as in Judeo-Christian God, and LotR was meant to take place in the past of our world, before magic left it
>>683605901during Melkor's first punishment that lasted several ages he was also bound by chains that Aule himself crafted, then for his final and perpetual imprisonment (until an event that Tolkien never finished) he was bound with the same chains. kinda serving as an eternal reminder that Aule embodied the benevolent qualities of the dichotomy between Aule and Morgoth that you're describing.
Just came in, didn't even knew about this LOTR game existed, is it any good? Is there any other forgotten LOTR games?
Fucking mental that multiple people on the ESA team okayed this.
I wonder if their onsite vods are gonna be as fucked as the streams are getting.
>>683606310it's also interesting that Sauron was before his fall the greatest of Maiar of Aule
>>683606010>I didn't really care for the dwarves before, but that completely changed now.like i described in an earlier post they also get their own heroic moment in an ultimate sacrifice. The dwarves displayed such fury and prowess with the superior craftmanship and mastery of their arms in a key battle that even the orcs, elves, or men wouldn't waylay them when they somberly departed from the great battle where they made the sacrifice that cost them their king in defense of retreating elves and men.
>>683606379Story's kind of shoddy, but having a secondary Fellowship that's following behind the actual one's a nice concept. There's an ungodly amount of grinding required to unlock certain skills. Battle system itself is a shameless ripoff of FFX, which I'm happy with.
>>683606274Yeah I'm aware of the religious background of Tolkien, but didn't he himself deny that his work was based on Christianity and how he hates allegories? There are some religious aspects in the books, but nothing explicitly. The story of Aule is probably the closest I have seen Tolkien go for something that could have been a story straight out of the bible
>>683606483>Maiar of Aulei somehow missed they were spawned from Aule, super interesting.>>683606274did Tolkien always have that allegorical intent? i don't know in what order he devised all the concepts but he did say it was a catholic work, 'not intentionally' at first.
>>683606404I think Deano is also one of the volunteers/staff, so that'll be part of it if so.
>>683606379It's a really cool game if you like the movie trilogy and old RPGs. It uses all the locations, assets, music, etc. from the movies and has surprising levels of effort on stuff like Ian McKellen narrating, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli appearing with their real actors voicing.
Holy fuck the rest of the day is a total disaster too.Thank God tomorrow is free of any of this multi hour long crap.
>>683606687no he hates allegory, but Eru is not supposed to be an allegory of God, it is supposed to be straight up God
>>683606640>Battle system itself is a shameless ripoff of FFX, which I'm happy with.Better than trying to invent their own and halfarsing it.
>>683606640I'm in shock at how shameless it is though this is LITERALLY just FFX, even the minimap is the same shit. The cursor, the battles, what the actual fuck
>>683606703not spawned by Aule, Maiar were created by Eru same as ValarSauron, Mairon back then, was meant to be the chief assistant to Aule, and he served that role dutifully for ages upon ages
redditbob MOGS thet trannies
>>683606541>like i described in an earlier post they also get their own heroic moment in an ultimate sacrifice. So many works have copied dwarves, but made them pretty superficial so it's easy to think that Tolkien's dwarves are bland. But Tolkien knew how to craft an interesting world, there is a reason why everyone copied him.>a key battleWhat battle was this? Would like to read up on it
>>683604010>thinking about other men's dicksYikes
>>683606775It's a movie tie-in game made at the peak of LotR hype. The selling point is just the setting really, the gameplay is just serviceable. Normally these kinds of games were pretty low quality but EA actually put a lot of effort into LotR with two hack and slash games, this RPG, and two strategy games.
>>683606978Some stuff does at least do interesting takes on them to make them theirs but then you also get companies like Blizzard that are pretty fucking shameless.
>>683606726>Ian McKellen narrating, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli appearing with their real actors voicing.they also do the voices for the ROTK game and even show up for filming in bonus videos available on the disk.i genuinely think part of what makes the films so enjoyable is most of the actors and people involved in the production had genuine respect and appreciation of Tolkien's work.this is a pretty funny video that most have probably seen where Elijah Wood gets pranked, but the actor for Merry asks a genuine question about a line from the books and you can see how serious and contemplative Wood gets. He even gets frustrated when he's not given a chance to give a serious answer. could also be my 'tism flaring up.https://youtu.be/IfhMILe8C84?t=260
>>683606761Kek yeah okay, easy solution.
runs that are 3+ hours long should only happen in the overnight stretches to bridge two days.
>>683606775Not LITERALLY, the characters/setting/story is actually good in this game
>>683607135The actors seemed like they really got along well during those movies.
>>683606913>Sauron, Mairon back then, was meant to be the chief assistant to Aule, and he served that role dutifully for ages upon agesahh i missed that too, i do recall that Sauron 'seemingly' does have genuine repentance after Morgoth's fall, but whether that was just due to fear instead of remorse is plausible and i believe even explicitly mentioned.
>>683606310>benevolent qualitiesSucking up to God?
Am I having fun vee
>>683607238and there's also the factor that it might have been remorse that got him close to redemption, and fear what ultimately kept him from itwhat is true is that Sauron never fell as far as Melkor and there always was a vanishingly small spark left in him that might have seen his redemption
>>683607135all of the 15 something hours of behind the scene documentary footage is just solid gold
>>683606379War in the North, hack and slay rpg similar to The Two Towers/RotK but instead you're playing one of three characters in single player or coop and venture north to Gundabad etc.Has been removed from digital storefronts a few years ago so you'll have to figure some other way of getting hold of it
>>683607116Yeah I can at least appreciate series like the Witcher that try to do something different with their fantasy races, even if for some attempts it doesn't work. But a lot of western and JRPGs just take the surface level stuff, and make them short people that love to dig and craft.
This run is so boring it's 17:00 and I feel like I am ready to go to bed already.
>lets put this troll to sleep
>>683606978>What battle was this? Would like to read up on itit was the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, the dwarves man up and solo an OP dragon that neither the elves or men could withstand.there's a youtube channel called wizards and warriors that do a nifty watered down portrayal with a battle map that makes it a bit easier to understand.
almost there, only 4 hours left
The elf girl's voice actor sounds familiar.
>>683607604>me at work
>>683607315>banning and deleting the trannies and the trollsBest way to do it desu.
>>683607049>EA actually put a lot of effort into LotR with two hack and slash games, this RPG, and two strategy games.Yeah, kinda surprising how much effort EA made even if it is a movie tie-ins, but guess it was because of the respect the series had. Nowadays you have the constant decline from shadows of mordor to rings of power to the fucking gollum game. Imagine making a game less respectful of the source material than fucking EA
>>683606913So I guess Aule sort of did get his punishment for creating the dwarves in a way, by having his best man become one of the world's worst evils
1/3rd of the way there, /v/ how you holding up?
How'd Aragorn live to 210?
>>683607687https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUgHDXOdUos
okay why is gandalf fighting a balrog again?is this a sequel?a prequel? this is kind of silly, but I'm okay with that, looks fun
>>683607320i guess you could argue that, though i don't think Tolkien ever alluded to Eru not being benevolent (there's an argument that his non-intervention strategy is evil similar to the judeo-christian god as he does have the power to stop tragedy and suffering)Aule's motivation behind the creation of the dwarves wasn't selfish or conceited like Morgoth, he genuinely enjoyed teaching/companionship and seeing his creations benefit the world and it's creatures.
>>683606978One of the factors that gets often overlooked, even by the LotR movies, is that the dwarves tended to have a warrior-poet aspect to themAnd they do enjoy beauty both crafted and that of the natural world, it's just that things they consider beautiful are not always the same as what other races consider beautiful, prime example in LotR with Gimli ending up in the glittering caves of Aglarond and being overcome with tears at the sheer beauty of it and flat out says the dwarves wouldn't dare use it for a mine, no matter how much wealth was in itAnd after the war it becomes a site of almost pilgrimage for dwarves who maintain it and in return help reinforce the Hornburg to be the greatest fortification in the world
>>683607552>I've made a terrible mistake agreeing to join this run
>>683607552
>audio directly ripped from the moviekino
>>683607738no, absolutely not, Eru does not punish by proxy in that way, he would NEVER corrupt someone just to punish a third party That's in fact a massive KEY difference between Eru and Morgoth, Morgoth engages in that sort of bullshit constantly and it is always shown to be utterly evil Sauron's fall was an entirely self-contained event in universe
>>683607569>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XBLHBmYNGwFound it, going to watch it when a shitty run is on. Will serve as a nice start while I track down the book
>>683607347>there always was a vanishingly small spark left in him that might have seen his redemptioni think this existed in Saruman too, first when Gandalf contronts him at Orthanc and when Frodo does in the shire right before he's killed.
>>683607780Neither, it's parallel.
>>683607743Third Age is a guilty pleasure, so I'm loving this.
>>683607931yep that's it, i think they get some minor details wrong that purists throw a hissy fit over but it's clear they put a lot of effort into it and the map helps alleviate my retardation when reading/listening to Tolkien's description of it.
>>683607780The party of this game are meant to be following the fellowship trying to protect them. So the developers take any chance they can to have a member of the fellowship join the party if they are separated. Here it's meant to be them helping Gandalf fight the Balrog sometime after the rest of the fellowship has departed (Gandalf fought the balrog for like days all throughout the mountain so even though it didn't happen, it's not technically impossible for them to have joined him briefly)
>>683608004Nothing guilty about it. It's a pretty good game.
>Get rid of stream 2>Still include quarter of a day long jrpg runs
>>683607959and it's also why later in life Tolkien was heavily conflicted about the portrayal for the Orcs as he wanted them to have the potential for redemption too Honestly Tolkien writing a short tale about a tribe of orc's slowly coming to redemption would have been fun to have

>>683607810it's also a fun bit of banter between him and Legolas where they make a deal for Gimli to show him the caves, Legolas is so enthralled with Gimli's passion and reverence he agrees despite his disinterest.
