There's coop mode too for some reason, though it means you just control different characters.
Also a mode where you get to play as the evil guys to unlock extra stuff for the main party.
Gets a bit silly because some enemies just let's you stunlock or instakill the good buys pretty much.
>>
>>683600736
Lucky for you this game doesn't have those as you'll know when you'll be getting an encounter based on the indicator in top left of the screen

I have no idea why games didn't follow pokemon's model of just having grass with random mobs, basically voluntary grinding. But all of that was a different era, we were younguns with heaps of time yet few games, people were okay with 50~100h JRPGs even if half of it was grinding.

Modern JRPG-inspired games handle things better, usually there are no/little random encounters, you can see them all beforehand and can backtrack before they respawn.

I know they are good, especially considering how shit other adaptations are. Like the Wheel of Time netflix one. But cutting Tom just massively screwed up the sense of the adventure for me, since they just decided to leave the Shire and basically immediately afterwards meet Aragorn. Plus I always liked how Tom made the world feel bigger, because while the ring is important, there are still beings that do not care about it. And he is pretty intriguing, since he is such an enigma while being a jolly fellow. But maybe after all these years, I'm able to let go of this and see it as a separate entity instead of comparing it to the books.

It's only due to valar intervention that anything works out and even then it's by the skin of their teeth and great/unexpected deeds by the small and seemingly unexceptional people

not a regular woman, she was a Rohirrim sword maiden who had incredibly devotion and love for her people. Tolkien constantly makes it a point that one's spirit matters

He was also pissed off when he predicted that the twist in some shakespeare work (i'm a pleb) didn't turn out how he predicted, so he wrote it into LOTR that the 'no living man will slay me' prophecy had a loophole.

>the war for the ring in the grand scheme of things is a historical footnote
Yeah I know, but almost every character in the story is pretty concerned about it. It makes sense that is so, because that is what the books are about. But Tom easily established early on that there are forces that do not care about the ring. The other characters that also don't care show up latter. And either end up as antagonist so are still impacting the journey like the Balrog, or still end up helping the fellowship like the ents. Tom is the only character that says have fun on your journey, but I'm staying home. And even have the council discuss how involving Tom would be a bad idea, since he will just not care about the ring itself. That is why I really like him being there, it makes the world deeper instead of just being a stated fact that it's a footnote
>>683602603
Yeah, to me it just adds so much to the world itself. It is just not a story about the ring, but it makes it feel like its a living world with various powers and factions in it. Especially since he lives pretty close to the hobbit's home, sort of adding to how sheltered the hobbits are. I get why he got cut in the movie, just like why they didn't include the scouring of the Shire. But it does detract from worldbuilding itself, plus it would have been fun to have included him in the extended cut just to see him sing and dance.

Yeah, modern writers are fucking stupid. Just make cool and interesting characters and people will like them. People don't mind Éowyn, but hate Galadriel in Rings of Power. CJ from SA is beloved, but people complain about Yasuke because he is chosen just as a statement. I have never seen anyone complain about Arcade from FNV being gay, yet modern writers now just make stereotypical faggots. The best example is probably the Wheels of Time series. The books make a statement that man and woman may be different, but each needs the other. While the tv series just completely ignores that to push their strong women

the elves also indiscriminately hunted the dwarves when they first found them, the dwarves then murdered a high-tier elven king named Thingol when he requested that the implant one of the Silmarils into a necklace he had them craft.

that said, the dwarves and elves never would have been successful/prosperous as they were without the trade routes and alliances they formed despite the animosity. the dwarves also sacrificed themselves and their king to save both elves and men in one of the pivotal battles against Morgoth.

they don't get along due to both having long cultural memories and things having gone awry between them, there's no natural aversion between the 2 races

Moria and Eregion were close friends for a thousand years and said friendship was only ended by Sauron overrunning the latter
In general, as long as there was no Silmaril autism involved, the Noldor and the Dwarves got along pretty well

>made by an impatient Ainur before even the elves.
it's a really cool part of the story, Aule basically intercedes in the grand plan of Eru by creating the dwarves prematurely, he appeals to Eru and begs forgiveness. He even attempts to smite his own creation in repentance to which the dwarves cower in fear, Eru stays his hand and proclaims that he himself gave them life/sentience or else they wouldn't feel fear at all as Aule didn't have the ability to bestow awareness in his creations.

as a caveat, they were sentenced to remain in hibernation until after the elves were created.
>>
>>683604953
What's also pretty cool is that Aule made a mistake in creating the dwarves, since he wasn't God himself he could not imbue them with true life
So what he created were effectively automatons, that appeared to be alive as long as Aule focused his attention and power on them, but otherwise were just puppets
He was overcome with grief when he learned of his mistake and tried to undo his cursed creation, but then Eru seeing Aule's genuine remorse and the good intention behind it instead imbued the dwarves with true life, with the only condition being that they would be made to sleep and only awake after the Elves had awoken

That's what the scene depicts, and how Aule learns of what Eru did: the dwarves instead of awaiting their fate as puppets would have recoiled before the hammer strike

Aule's tale with the Dwarves is also meant to contrast him with Melkor
Both went against the apparent wishes of Eru, both inserted something notable into creation of their own design, out of impatience, pride

The key difference being one of them sought to atone for it and the other did not, and to showcase that Eru had already accounted for the Valar doing so, as both the Dwarves and the concepts of Heat and Cold (latter being Melkor's design) could fit into reality seamlessly and only made it grander and more beautiful

But the outcomes for either Valar was different, Aule remained in god's grace and got to watch the Dwarves grow and carve out their own paths, while Melkor succumbed to darkness and never got to appreciate the beauty Heat and Cold had on the world

>and how Aule learns of what Eru did: the dwarves instead of awaiting their fate as puppets would have recoiled before the hammer strike
Man that is a kino scene, knowing that background now. I didn't really care for the dwarves before, but that completely changed now. Love how Aule fucked up, repents and then during that attempt learns he has been forgiven. Really has those old testament vibes.
>>
this is basically final fantasy x with bows
>>
That's horrifying
>>
>>683606010
>Really has those old testament vibes.
Well Eru was supposed to be God, as in Judeo-Christian God, and LotR was meant to take place in the past of our world, before magic left it
>>
>>683605901
during Melkor's first punishment that lasted several ages he was also bound by chains that Aule himself crafted, then for his final and perpetual imprisonment (until an event that Tolkien never finished) he was bound with the same chains. kinda serving as an eternal reminder that Aule embodied the benevolent qualities of the dichotomy between Aule and Morgoth that you're describing.

>>

>I didn't really care for the dwarves before, but that completely changed now.
like i described in an earlier post they also get their own heroic moment in an ultimate sacrifice.

The dwarves displayed such fury and prowess with the superior craftmanship and mastery of their arms in a key battle that even the orcs, elves, or men wouldn't waylay them when they somberly departed from the great battle where they made the sacrifice that cost them their king in defense of retreating elves and men.
>>
>>683606379
Story's kind of shoddy, but having a secondary Fellowship that's following behind the actual one's a nice concept. There's an ungodly amount of grinding required to unlock certain skills. Battle system itself is a shameless ripoff of FFX, which I'm happy with.
>>
>>683606274
Yeah I'm aware of the religious background of Tolkien, but didn't he himself deny that his work was based on Christianity and how he hates allegories? There are some religious aspects in the books, but nothing explicitly. The story of Aule is probably the closest I have seen Tolkien go for something that could have been a story straight out of the bible
>>
>>683606483
>Maiar of Aule
i somehow missed they were spawned from Aule, super interesting.
>>683606274
did Tolkien always have that allegorical intent? i don't know in what order he devised all the concepts but he did say it was a catholic work, 'not intentionally' at first.

So many works have copied dwarves, but made them pretty superficial so it's easy to think that Tolkien's dwarves are bland. But Tolkien knew how to craft an interesting world, there is a reason why everyone copied him.

It's a movie tie-in game made at the peak of LotR hype. The selling point is just the setting really, the gameplay is just serviceable. Normally these kinds of games were pretty low quality but EA actually put a lot of effort into LotR with two hack and slash games, this RPG, and two strategy games.

>Ian McKellen narrating, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli appearing with their real actors voicing.
they also do the voices for the ROTK game and even show up for filming in bonus videos available on the disk.

i genuinely think part of what makes the films so enjoyable is most of the actors and people involved in the production had genuine respect and appreciation of Tolkien's work.

this is a pretty funny video that most have probably seen where Elijah Wood gets pranked, but the actor for Merry asks a genuine question about a line from the books and you can see how serious and contemplative Wood gets. He even gets frustrated when he's not given a chance to give a serious answer. could also be my 'tism flaring up.

ahh i missed that too, i do recall that Sauron 'seemingly' does have genuine repentance after Morgoth's fall, but whether that was just due to fear instead of remorse is plausible and i believe even explicitly mentioned.

Yeah I can at least appreciate series like the Witcher that try to do something different with their fantasy races, even if for some attempts it doesn't work. But a lot of western and JRPGs just take the surface level stuff, and make them short people that love to dig and craft.

Yeah, kinda surprising how much effort EA made even if it is a movie tie-ins, but guess it was because of the respect the series had. Nowadays you have the constant decline from shadows of mordor to rings of power to the fucking gollum game. Imagine making a game less respectful of the source material than fucking EA

i guess you could argue that, though i don't think Tolkien ever alluded to Eru not being benevolent (there's an argument that his non-intervention strategy is evil similar to the judeo-christian god as he does have the power to stop tragedy and suffering)

Aule's motivation behind the creation of the dwarves wasn't selfish or conceited like Morgoth, he genuinely enjoyed teaching/companionship and seeing his creations benefit the world and it's creatures.
>>
>>683606978
One of the factors that gets often overlooked, even by the LotR movies, is that the dwarves tended to have a warrior-poet aspect to them
And they do enjoy beauty both crafted and that of the natural world, it's just that things they consider beautiful are not always the same as what other races consider beautiful, prime example in LotR with Gimli ending up in the glittering caves of Aglarond and being overcome with tears at the sheer beauty of it and flat out says the dwarves wouldn't dare use it for a mine, no matter how much wealth was in it

And after the war it becomes a site of almost pilgrimage for dwarves who maintain it and in return help reinforce the Hornburg to be the greatest fortification in the world

no, absolutely not, Eru does not punish by proxy in that way, he would NEVER corrupt someone just to punish a third party
That's in fact a massive KEY difference between Eru and Morgoth, Morgoth engages in that sort of bullshit constantly and it is always shown to be utterly evil

Sauron's fall was an entirely self-contained event in universe

>>
>>683607780
The party of this game are meant to be following the fellowship trying to protect them. So the developers take any chance they can to have a member of the fellowship join the party if they are separated. Here it's meant to be them helping Gandalf fight the Balrog sometime after the rest of the fellowship has departed (Gandalf fought the balrog for like days all throughout the mountain so even though it didn't happen, it's not technically impossible for them to have joined him briefly)
