I think it has something to do with the cute aesthetics combined with the hyper competitive nature. You have a strange mixture of casual (mindless) players, with hyper sweats, and if you wind up with crayon eaters on your team, it's an uphill battle. The bad matchmaking combined with the netcode that can make many deaths feel cheap adds to the rage. Still, there's something unique about Splatoon rage. I can't think of any other games that got me this mad before, but for some people they take it to other extremes. See pic related, but also people breaking their TVs and controllers is not uncommon with this game.
