We truly owe a lot to the philosopher gamer, Neil Druckmann.

You have to understand, gamer culture was pretty different back when TLoU came out.
People hated putting the quarters in, they called them "microtransactions".

I feel like games really did mature after Last of Us 2, so many low IQ, impulsive chimpchuds couldn't handle
>CHARACTER I HAVE UNHEALTHY ATTRACTION TO IS LE DEAD!!!!!
and had meltdowns

Well narratively you could say that he preemptively poisoned the well before attempting to get you to like the new character
but otherwise having the complete one side of the story building tension towards a presumed finale only to have that shit crash as you start the other half of the story and have to start that build-up again.
The sequel also was a bit of a tone change since the previous game and was of a downer really, kind of alienating a lot of the previous audience.

>NoOoOo you don't get it you stupid chud, when the quirky diverse character humiliates and murders the fan-favorite while marvel quipping, it's a good thing!

>Walking simulators, cover-based shooters, environmental storytelling, stealth games, quick time events, and drawn-out melodramatic cutscenes didn’t exist before The Last of Us

I know, I hated needing to put a quarter in my xbox every time I died in Halo
