It looks like Godwyn was going to be at least in the game as a boss but somewhere they changed it to Radahn because everyone knew Godwyn had to be in it. They seemed to go out of their way to not include anything any prominent lore pointed to so no one can have any conclusive narrative.

There was plenty of interesting stuff in the base game they could have explored but instead their focus was entirely on "WHAT DID MALENIA SAY TO RADAHN IN THE OPENING!" which was the most nothing thing they could have used to base the entire DLC on.

Godwyn should have just been his own boss in the base game, finally killing his body so he can be properly be reborn by being embraced by Fia. Instead one of the games only good questlined ends anti climatically and gives a generic ending
