>>683727805It's linear story progression but literally every single FF game prior to FFX had full areas that you could visit out of sequence, or which were entirely optional. FFX has optional areas, but they are all crammed into the endgame.

You explore a little patch of the world, then you find an item/vehicle that opens up the next little patch of the world and so on until you have access to the full world, that's how all of them work. Then 10 is just linear with some backtracking and when the "open world" "opens up" it's just optional areas to pick in a menu. Unfortunately it was also a good game so it cursed the entire genre with this meme structure.
