Why do indies fail to capture the essence, the soul, of classic games despite looking so similar?

The limitations and lack there off of the hardware.
Old games look the way they do because the limitation of the hardware. Doing the best they can with what they have.
While New games mimicing the style are emulating a style without limits. So nothing them make actually looks are feels like the effort was put in. Holding themselves back for worse than what they could do or going much to far and ruining the illusion. Very few indie games can match the aesthetic and feel of an old game making the best of limited hardware.

The classics were the best looking games yet made at the time, they were made by the best artists in the industry who had to work within hardware limitations, and they were competing on quality graphics just like companies do now. A hobbyist who can just ship whatever they can muster because of the low barrier to entry of indies on PC is obviously going to be hitting a lower standard. The exceptions take over 5 years to develop or were the type of 2D artists that would've been scooped up by a major company in the 90s.

These people just never had it. Best they can do is imitate. Soul is something that grows within, from sruggles to yearnings. That's an artist, and these people aren't artists, just copy pasters.

Indies can rarely be authentic because technology has advanced so much. They don't have the same limitations. They can make kick-ass graphics that would be impossible for actual retro games to do, but they still use pixels so there's a disconnect.

They use low resolution sprites to hide their glorified doodles as oppose to use every trick in book to extract details out of those pixels like SNES developers used to.

Old devs did pixel art. New devs do 16-bit cal arts (((homage))).
