In most CRPGs it just saves time.If you save before a combat and then get annihilated you can of course play until the game over screen which forces you to reload anyway or just reload earlier as soon as you know it's over. In some games you even need to reload fights you won because if you spent too much resources on it you'll lose the next one so you need to optimize that encounter.In some games it's also necessary to savescum if you don't want to completely replay the game. Let's say for story decisions or quest rewards you want to see different outcomes so you reload a few times to see them all and then choose which you like the most. This is totally legit since many games are bad at telegraphing what some decisions entail.
