This. Back then companies didn't have a knife against their throat all the time, because games were way cheaper to develop, and risks could be taken.

Also, Vanessa's animations are manually done by hand. No motion capture. If you look at the ending credits, it was done by the same guy who later directed Resident Evil 5, Kenichi Ueda.
