>le meaningless open world meme
The game was brilliant with it. Only free roaming was a bit too static since there was no traffic or activity in between bases and outposts. That's really my only complaint about the open world aspect. The maps we're still tightknit and very well designed. In missions they did it justice with a lot of patrols and general activity happening in the operation zone.
If the lack of activity in free roam annoyed you, Infinite Heaven (mod) fixes that and goes way beyond with customization. They probably would have spruced up free roam with the planned DLC that we never got.

So why not have the map reatorcted to around the area where shit actually happens? It was pointless trend chasing.

The only way you can do open world right if you make progression through it part of the experience of your playthrough, like choosing parts pf the game in different orders, exploring/finding stuff, traveling and finding routes, collecting gear,...

The idea of an MGS open world is retarded

I agree, I don't think air dropping via helicopter would have worked if the map was more dense.
Only way I'd change it is being able to analyze LZ's more closely for random enemy patrols, but that's basically already a thing with alert mode anyways.
>>
>>683795950

Infinite Heaven adds the option for random patrols in freeroam, but doesn't let you increase frequency sadly (I don't think)

mods don't even fix it, just makes it a little bit less empty and lets you tune the difficulty a little bit, but it can't fix the dogshit level design (or lack thereof), the story, the mission structure.

>>
>>683799658
I meant in the game.

It is the same level design you with extra decoration.
>>
>>683794586
I don't think any mainline MGS game is bad, but I would put GZ over Phantom Pain, hell I'd put 4 over Phantom Pain because the world lacks personality and intrigue.
>>
>>683800062
It's a good game but not a great one, and you expect the latter in a MGS.
>>
>>683800128
Did you even play the game?
Like 90% of Afghan is a massive canyon, and 90% of Africa is a huge plain, they're not even remotely similar.
You can just SAY you watched a playthrough on youtube you know, you won't be judged too badly
>>
Should I give MGSV / Death Stranding a chance? Never played them.
>>
>>683800128
They're not the same at all and I play entirely differently in both zones.
>>
>>683800523
They're pretty different games, but yes, I recommend them
>>
>The open world was meaningless and just pushed pointless grind and MTX on the player
>Due to the open world, main mission structure was a mess in which it felt like 90% of what you did in the game didn’t really matter.
>Side missions are literally Bethesda tier radiant quests.
>Designing tight interesting levels for a open world map is not possible so 95% of the map is utterly forgettable and the ones that aren’t, are half baked compared to most locations in the series.
>No warfare between different NPC factions that would have made exploring the open world way more enjoyable, Something fucking MGS4 had
>Motherbase support bring there at all times killed a good amount of the tension and need for exploration. OSP for all missions is not support for some retarded reason.
I really wished it was better, I really did
>>
>classic Metal Gear but with all the movement and options from V

That's all I want. The way V controls was awesome and you could do so much shit if you wanted to, even if the best way to sneak around was quite literally rolling around on the floor.
>>
The only level that felt like classic MGS was Retake the Platform
>>
>>683800996
Yeah MGS5 might be the most smoothly controlled game of its kind ever. Its such a fucking god damn shame the FOX Engine will now waste away.
>>
>>683794586
Game really should’ve been about Big Boss establishing Outer Heaven and eventually Zanzibarland. Drop the oil rig, first half set in Africa where you start building Outer Heaven and can freely travel from base to open world. Second half is about being hired by the CIA or some shit to fight a war in Afghanistan. Your mercs can be deployed as an allied faction in the game that patrol and control towns as the enemies do. Epilogue mission is a remake of Metal Gear 1 where you play as Solid Snake infiltrating the base you’ve built.

Seems like we're getting that with mgs traingle. The running, crouch walking and crawling (while on your back) animations seem to have been ripped directly from V. It'll probably be another Twin Snakes situation though since it doesn't seem like they've made any changes to the levels
>>

>get to africa
>BOSS THERE'S TWO DIFFERENT PMC'S
>FUCK YEAH THEY'RE GONNA FI-
>THEY'VE GOT A DEAL WITH EACH OTHER NOT TO FIGHT
The world not feeling alive is it's biggest detriment. I wish the story missions were longer and more thought out as well, they went with peace walker (unsurprising) level design despite being on consoles this time around.
I remember playing Ground Zeroes and just wondering what the main game would be like, I still enjoy playing it but it's still sad. Most depressing fact I find is that most of the game's cutscenes are shown in snippets in the red band trailer.
Later on in the game, the subsistence and extreme missions are better. Makes it feel like an older MGS game in that regard.

>>
>>683804014
>Mansion
Overrated as fuck, mainly because no missions made good use of it. In the Code Talker mission for example, it was a disgrace to put a backdoor that takes you directly to him.
>>
>>683802682
It has a terrible camera though, the worst in the series.
>>
>>683804125
Huh? How so? I've never seen this complaint
>>
>>683804119
I liked the areas surrounding the mansion itself, the indoors was alright, elevated by the mere fact that we get fuckall indoor areas in the game.
>>
>>683804242
Also the camera becomes very shitty in indoor areas, it gets too close to snake which doesn't let you see shit
>>
>>683801807
How?
>>
>>683804213
It’s way too zoomed in and they went for an Arkham style where you have to change shoulders even when not aiming. You no longer have the same sightline as enemies and therefore makes it needlessly harder to tell if you’re covered. Miller will also talk to you at inopportune times so you can’t hear.

>>683804242
>>683804314
I was so irritated that you couldn’t soft-open doors.
>>
>>683805298
>I was so irritated that you couldn’t soft-open doors.
you can, you just gotta go slower than usual, unless you mean something else
>>
>>683805645
Can you do that on keyboard? I’ll have to play again, but I swear that I couldn’t do that when walking with the ctrl key.
>>
>>683805972
yeah you hold Ctrl while opening the door, Snake initially gets stuck at the door for a split second but you have to just continue slow-walking forward
>>
>>683802903
>Later on in the game, the subsistence and extreme missions are better
Not if you played the game correctly the first time around. Then they just turn into repeats of exactly what you already did. If you played with aimassist, vision hud, or used any weapons you didn't beat the game.

A cool anon was showing off webms based on his Infinite Heaven setup earlier this week in a MGSV seethe thread. I decided to reinstall both it and GZ and finally check out some of these mods.

So why is the consensus that GZ is a better game? It’s really small and the stealth can be obnoxious. Honest, I think it’s better as a commando game than stealth.
