Why did old games have so much SOVL, /v/?Why don't newer games ever feel the same?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIR22Q97R44
>>683804023because you were experiencing rare genius and expecting it to just keep happening nonstop
old games had soul
Made by people who actually care about videogames
Because the medium was full of imagination and experiment back then and the financiers took risks.
The world in general was more hopeful back then
Everything was meticulously hand crafted and animated. Now you practically press a Generate button in Unreal to do all that for you.
>>68380435290s aesthetics tend to be darker than 00s and especially 10s. It's just there's also a lot of charm in 90s aesthetics too.

>>683804023Natural state of every industry - continous cost saving to the point where quality becomes shit. In 1997 they had to make a good self contained game and had no way to patch it if they released shit. Then internet became popular and you could patch your game. Then you could use internet to distribute your expansion packs so you no longer had to make a big expansion pack. Then you could dlc out of stuff in your base game. Then you could off source beta testing to people who pay for early access. It all started to naturally creep towards shit and now everyone is used to shit so no need to make anything good.

1995 to 2005 is probably the peak.
>>683805208One of the best tracks yeah. I also like the one that plays when Cloud is in the wheelchair.
>>683804023Have you played anything besides final fantasy?
>>683804023You are not going to like the answer but ok. Soul comes from passion and skill and challenging oneself, in short it can only happen when artists and not suits are in charge. You know, people that are actually making the game that they want to make. The moment companies start playing it safe by copying proved success or change their games to appeal to larger audiences, the moment social media feedback influence their decisions, the moment a company hires people to fill quotas or starts listening to social correctness teams that talk about inclusivity and representation there is no chance to achieve soul. The reason old gaming companies could afford to be more creative, original, free and experimental is because passionate people being in charge didn´t necessarily mean a company would go out of business for taking all those risks. A lot still did but the industry was smaller so some degree of commercial failure didn´t mean the same thing it means today. These days even successful companies that play it safe can go under if they don´t meet sales expectations. So not going through the hoops and appealing to the larger audiences is no longer optional for big companies.
>>683805208played when Cloud faked up the memory that 8yo Tifa ever noticed him.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az2zXT6o7KM&t=851
>>683804023The game was gay then and it's gay now. Only women could enjoy that boring shit.
>>6838040231. Devs and producers and testers put in a crazy amount of overtime to make something they believed in2. Games were made for Gamers, not for 'consumers'3. Couldn't just ship it broken and patch it later, so, it had to be polished and thoroughly tested before launch4. The people making them loved the medium and those who loved it as well, instead of being purple-haired job coaster / quiet-quitter trying to insert their love for bisexuality into everything - even if nobody asked for it.
>>683804023Iq is falling all over the worldPeople were smarter back then
>>683804023I like the Remake version, I think the Remake has amazing music, but I feel like OG Mako Reactor fits the setting better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZH6coTxDTo
because working within limitations makes the artist think creatively and results in the audience also needing to think creatively, which your brain will do subconciously, to percieve the desired outcomeit makes it feel like a mgic trick, because you know it's not realistic, but your brain will fill in the gaps in a way that is pleasing to youalso their were less distractions back then, it allowed the artist to really hone their craft and let the audience have a better mindset to absorb it
