A bunch of RE fans were butthurt about the Paul Anderson films not adapting the games directly, so they've spent decades gassing up George Romero's fucking terrible Resident Evil screenplay (which most of them have never read) and downplaying how deeply mediocre, even bad, most of Romero's movies were.

The director of Event Horizon makes a Resident Evil film and it has a tight script, fantastic visual design, great music, memorable characters, and an immense sense of vision and passion -- and people are like, "I wish we'd gotten the version by the guy who made Diary of the Dead instead." They have this bizarre idea that Resident Evil needs to be translated "faithfully" into a movie, and they refuse to let go of that delusion.
