Graces's story might be bad but the characters and all the skits, jokes and how they interact elevates it beyond most tales games.

Can someone help me see what I'm missing with this game? I played it and really didn't like it, and all comments i've seen were "yeah the story and characters suck outside of the loli but THE GAMEPLAY" but the combat felt like a lot of great ideas executed poorly

whole game just felt like I was doing the same combos on the same enemies over and over in linear hallways the game calls dungeons that exist in linear hallways the game calls a world, I'm not even gonna bother talking about the story because I've literally never seen anyone defend it but people seem to love the combat in this game when to me it feels really mindless unless you've literally never played a game with a parry/perfect dodge mechanic before

Mashing until you use up your CC, then giving the enemy its turn back while you stop and wait for all your CC to come back isn't efficient play. It's like doing nothing but thoughtless lv1->lv2->lv3 chains in Symphonia and saying it doesn't have links. It's because CC runs out and has to refill that links exist and are useful, especially early game/first playthrough where you have less CC and using links and loops effectively is important to keep combos going. Links allow you to regenerate CC between the linked combos, extending your combo past what you'll get out of running up and blowing all of your CC at once then sitting around waiting and letting the enemy become actionable again. Here's an example of a couple different links that can be performed in the very early game in Destiny DC, the original CC game. If Stahn here played the way you're describing then he would mash swallow dance or hell sword a couple of times and then proceed to stand there guarding and letting the enemy take its turn back 4 seconds in. The combo would be a lot shorter, wouldn't lock down the enemy nearly as effectively, and Stahn would leave himself in a vulnerable state much more frequently.

Cheria's moveset really shines when you have Hubert cosplaying as her with the nakiri dolls. His High accuracy and strength makes those little daggers stagger like crazy and deal lots of damage. I fucking love the Nakiri dolls, because they let you shore up the weaknesses of some characters. For example, you could have Sophie or Pascal cosplay as Hubert if you wanted him to be tanky, and I think Asbel was a better Malik than Malik because he had higher strength and magic. If I recall correctly, it's Cheria and Richard who have the worst stats all around and aren't very good, but Richard at least serves better as Cheria than Cheria.

Abyss was so much fun. I randomly pirated it and spent like 120 hours going through all of it. Unfortunately, Abyss was also my first Tales game so it's been a slightly bitter experience when playing the other ones. One of the better ones was the first game, Tales of Phantasia. I was a hardcore nintendo-only JRPGlet Symphonia baby growing up, and I absolutely HATED the Vesperia remaster. There's a reason Metroidvanias are currently one of the most popular genres. It turns out most people fucking loathe missables and arbitrary points of no return for quests in their games, and Vesperia is chock full of them, to the point you could have played the game a dozzen times and still need to be tethered to a guide so you don't miss stuff on a fresh save. It's been a while but I believe you can, technically, although it won't be as consistent. However that's not because of CC but rather the fucked up hitstun mechanics in Graces where enemies can have very abusive stagger resistance and seemingly randomly break out of combos. (By the way, if you bring this up, people online will usually tell you that ACC affects stagger time and the solution is just raising your ACC stat. That's not actually how it works, and it still happens with ACC maxed out.)
i.e. this would still happen if it was TP-based and some TP-based games have similar problems like Xillia.

At low level/early game CC is less limiting and lets you focus more on efficient kit usage and fundamentals instead of using two artes and running out of TP, while TP late game has the opposite problem with high TP pools and availability of TP cost reduction items like the faerie ring making TP into an ineffective limiter that can just be ignored whereas CC similarly will be more abundant, just like you can start new chains with 100s of TP you can also start and link into new chains with 20-30 max CC (Yes the number is lower but 1CC is a lot more valuable than 1TP and regenerates) but the resource management doesn't completely stop existing to the extent it does in the mid to late portion of TP games.

I think Graces is decent, it's just the hitstun mechanics mainly holding it back. I should also mention that to my understanding weaving sidesteps into combos more is what actually counteracts that shit.

I don't really agree. The Faerie Ring cuts your TP consumption in half, and is arguably the best accessory in several games, especially Destiny 2 where TP cost reduction is almost a necessity, whereas most other rings are negligible stat boosts or elemental/status effect resistances which are highly situational. That is to say that the thing is, the faerie ring IS an accessory that makes you win more, by effectively doubling your available resources. Although it's true that even without it TP rises so high in late game and NG+ that it becomes largely ignorable. Especially Vesperia where level 3 over limit disables TP consumption. And,

You should, since you seem to like the fighting game adjacent aspects of the series. It's the same thing I like about Tales, and in my opinion it's the game that captures those elements most effectively.

FYI, there's a hidden stagger resistance value that all enemies have. Bosses like Kurt or Veigue are like that because it's set really high. You should be able to play around it with about anyone by using weaknesses and the way sidestep interacts with hitstun effectively. Cheria is definitely especially effective but I mostly play solo Sophie. You can also set that value to 0 using cheat engine and the only thing that really will change is random combo drops becoming less likely
