Romancing SaGa 4 is a part of the SaGa series and is a sequel to Romancing SaGa 3. It stars new character and a new make-believe legend known as the "Eight Pyramid Jewels." It will be released for the Wii U, Playstation 4, and Xbox One in June 2016. It will also be released for the Nintendo NX. This is a part of SaGa's 25th anniversary.

- Plot

A long time ago, on Earth their was 8 Pyramid Jewels that has strong powers. A devil named, Jaxus wanted to get the power to rule the world. Some heroes defeated him and they placed each in a different position. But, 900 years later, he was revived by the "Four Imperial Hellions." The new heroes have to go through adventures of collecting all 8 jewels, beating the FIH, and destroying Jaxus for good.

After the heroes defeated all of the Four Imperial Hellions, they ask a genius, Norman (not playable) where Jaxus was, because he researched everything about the 8 Pyramid Jewels, the Four Imperial Hellions, and Jaxus. He said that Jaxus is in an underground castle under Forgus.

After the heroes defeated Jaxus, he went to a rocket and blast off into space to the moon. Norman said that he was planning to bring back the Destroyer from Romancing SaGa 3 back to life. They have to find parts to make the rocket to go to the moon and save everyone from Jaxus and the Destroyer.

After they defeated Jaxus and the Destroyer, they left the moon before the Destroyer destroyed the Moon. But Wynne and Koline had the unknown power of creation. So they used it to form the moon again with Jaxus and the Destroyer not there. Then the Earth went back to being in good order.

Is this the series where the gimmick is you take over multiple generations of protagonists? I have never played any myself. Would this be a good place to start?
>>
>>689265414
It is very divisive. I personally like it but it has a lot of problems.

>the different worlds have variants to them depend on your number of playthroughs as well as who the protagonist is make the writing all over the place. It has a few highs but too many lows.
>the Emerald Wave pointing out where to go make the worse world variants feel a lot more of a slog as you just go from point A to point B to just get it over with
>can't skip events, even the ones you've already seen
>slow and clunky UI
>there's no normal shop where you buy and sell stuff, you have to trade materials through a menu, and trading what net you what is somewhat obtuse. This combine with the clunky UI makes it a real chore to do.
And to be honest, even if I'm not a graphic whore, the whole game just feel really cheap.

Outside of the UI and some middling character design it's really good, but it was still riding on a shoestring budget at it shows, a couple of worlds are clearly underdeveloped compared to others and they also had to cut some of them.
Also trading was a really, really bad decision, overall it's a great entry but it's still meant mostly for hardcore fans who vibe with how Unlimited did things, if you don't like that you probably won't like EB, that and there's a lot of throwbacks to the GB games.

RS2 is a game of your whole kingdom and lineage. The game has first prince / king, but after events a time skip will occur and you pick the one who will inherit the throne.
The game can end 1000 years after the intro scene.
>>
>>689268494
You can't softlock yourself unless you do absolutely retarded shit like completing the mermaid quest with the Final Emperor, which is basically impossible for you to do unknowingly.
Also given how much the devs have butchered the game in this remake I doubt you can even do that in here.
>how is Scarlet Grace Ambitions
It's divisive because it plays like a HOMM game, in the sense that you don't have dungeons or cities to explore, other than that it's good, it's a romancing style game with fairly complex campaign and quest design.
It suffered from very low budget though so the graphics are pretty bad and the gameplay got streamlined a fair bit, Emerald Beyond is basically a direct upgrade in terms of gameplay but it also doesn't have a lot of mechanics from SSG, and a lot of core mechanics are different as well since EB is like the GB games or Frontier rather than the Romancing style.

It's not even multiple generations. When your character dies or "ages" you just pick a new heir. The heirs aren't even related to you or anything, could just be a random dude in your castle. I was disappointed by that, but the game was enjoyable.
>>
>>689275984
The UI and main menu design is really important, especially in a game where you navigate through menus often. These days you get shit like FF XV and Valkyrie Elysium (god that menu is disgusting), but the game that started this trend was none other than FF X
>>

The demo was really awesome. The gameplay is not as amazing as EB but then what could ever match up to peak JRPG combat, it's still great and it's a remake so they have to make some concessions to the original. I was gonna get this game anyway but demo convinced me to preorder.

SaGa games are for pure RPG ADHD schizos. The ones who write spreadsheets and have to keep a notepad on how many times they used X skill so they can build characters properly. The ones who have to keep track of total battles because difficulty scales off an invisible counter called battle rank.
A majority of games are ugly as shit, both in 3D and 2D. Again, it's schizo shit. It's worshipped on /v/ because it's filled with schizos.

The battle mechanics are fun, but you get locked into worlds and you are guided by green threads constantly. You'd need to be braindead to get lost in Emerald Beyond, and it really hampers the exploration that previous games had. Even Scarlet Grace gave the player more flexibility depending on the character. Also mucho texto compared to other entries. Still a good game, I just rank Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song, 2, 3, SaGa 2, SaGa Frontier, and Scarlet Grace over it.

That didn't answer my question, but okay. So, you play as like eight generations worth of rulers? That just tells me it takes 100 years to slay one villain.

Time skip occurs when you retrieve a lost part of the kingdom. It doesn't have to be killing one of the seven heroes.

Kawazu during these years has painstakingly made sure to rerelease most of the series in official format in some capacity, the only three major titles missing currently are the original SNES Romancing (not sure if we'll ever get that one), Frontier 2 (and we know the remaster of that is coming soon) and Unlimited (which let's be honest, is the one needing a remake or at least a fuckton of qol changes to work).
10 years ago SaGa was just a forgotten franchise that Square had barely released in the west in all of its life and had only a dedicated fanbase. If back then i was told we would have got annual releases and finally import old ass titles like Romancing 3 which would have given us gems like picrel, i would have laughed in your face and called you retarded. This level of effort earns at least some degree of respect from my part.

minstrel song is a full remake of RS1. this is a remake of RS2. it's basically the difference between FF3 and FF6
RS2 original was kinda jank but not *nearly* as bad as RS1 original, the devs learned a lot over the process of making the two games, and it looks like the remake is addressing and improving a lot of the other old pain points (awkwardness of reforming your party after a new generation, slow traversal of the world, utterly opaque sparking system, etc)

That seems like a dumb excuse because the more you play, the less a game can hide from you. If the game isn't as enjoyable after you've played it a lot vs the start, then it isn't a well designed game.

So obviously, if they explain or show basic mechanics in a well designed game, that doesn't make the game worse to play.

So generation skipping is mainly for gameplay, past the intro and final scenario, all the Emperors consist of the generic classes out of the pool you've unlocked. So, the Emperor could be a Fighter, a Wizard, a Moleman, a Nereid, a Lobsterman, a robot, whatever you get out of a selection of 6 characters. You shift Emperors whenever the previous one dies from a TPK, gets perma-killed, or the in-game timer pass on (usually reclaiming/conquering about 2 sections of Avalon or getting into ~50 fights. SaGa games hate you grinding). There can (and most likely will) be more than 7 Emperors.

You enter the final scenario once you kill six out of the Seven Heroes, giving you the Final Emperor (whose gender you pick at the start of the game) and tasking you to finish the job, take out the last one and their final form.
>>
>>689315014
From what we've seen, they're adding stuff from the RS2 stage play into the remake. Nothing saying they aren't also adding new expanded on things too, but we don't know about that yet.
>>
>>689323281
Roguelikes are some of the most consistently better designed RPGs and they hide like 90% of the critical information from you because the genre is built around making you fucking think.
I think RS2 obfuscation on armor values was a bit bullshit but it was not the end of the world and there was still a general logic that worked when appied to equipment, as long as you read the fucking manual which told you how armor worked.
Obfuscation is rarely a problem unless it's actually done for malicious intents, which isn't the case for these games and why despite every single modern entry being almost completely transparent they still didn't break into the mainstream regardless of the complaints about the obfuscation which has not been a thing for two decades by now.
>>
It's very obvious Square ordered Xeen to make a dumbed down remake of the most beloved game in the franchise for casuals and when it inevitably sells better than the brand new game Kawazu made with no budget they will use that as an excuse to remove control from him
>>
>>689324284
You're right about most things outside of the fact that this will actually sell and Kawazu is near retirement anyway so this matters little, SaGa's not surviving this decade anyway
>>
Did they remove the level scaling?
>>
>>689324284
Despite your raging autism, you aren't wrong that they wanted a more casual remake for the global audience. Just that it wasn't Square as it was Kawazu himself that wanted XEEN to do their thing.
https://www.rpgsite.net/interview/16302-romancing-saga-2-revenge-seven-interview-talking-remaking-niche-classic-with-shinichi-tatsuke

Ultimately, it is a remake designed to onboard people into the series, balancing how much SaGa will remain with more casual mechanics. SaGa fans can always play the original remaster (which you also hate for some reason...) or Emerald Beyond.

>>689325030
Of course not, that shit is part of the DNA of the series.
>>
>>689325030

>>
>>689324467
Nips have a huge nostalgia boner for RS2 and they didn't care fir EB. There's no chance this doesn't sell better. I already recall seeing it ranking high on amazon.jp.
>>
>>689325030
BR is not level scaling, retard
They also made it worse to appeal to babies like you
>>
>>689323686
I don't think roguelike sensibilities apply well to a game with set design and challenges, and aren't a good design philosophy in most cases to start. They do a good job at extending game time alongside randomized content to get more out of a game, but that's not what most RPGs are outside of mystery dungeons and Daggerfall.

But to a new player, what is even being revealed here that makes them stop thinking? You don't even know what an unlockable tech is called until you learn it, or what level it's learned at, just that it's possible to learn one with that weapon and whether or not you're close to it.

And once you learn it, fuck if you know if that was particularly that helpful on that character or not until you fight enemies that require it or are trivialized by it, which you'll also have to learn yourself. Like you didn't know the next move you would learn with the weapon type you were leveling would teach you an attack that stuns, and you don't know how useful stun would even be after you do learn it.
>>
Eh... I like some of the character designs, but I felt like crap losing them, can't you keep the same design even if they have different names or something?
>>
>>689312818
They have a demo out for the game on everything too, save data carries over to the main game so you can give it a shot.
>>
>>689325695
SaGa is, without a hint of irony, greatly influenced by the philosophy of the original Hack, there's a lot of roguelike design philosophy in these games, this is something Kawazu himself said.
If you don't like this aspect of the series you just don't get it, no offense meant because you can certainly enjoy things for different reasons, but that specific layer of obfuscation is part of the series' core identity and is derived from Roguelikes.
>>
>>689325582
>BR is not level scaling, retard
It serves the exact same purpose.
>>
>>689326036
Regardless of whether they live or die, a character will be replaced by their successor. For the most part, they will be palette swaps of one another, so don't worry your head. The remake does add more unique accessories based off their appearances in the mobile games, but they still follow a base design trend. So the enchantresses will all look busty~.

you COULD play long enough that the game have to cycle back around to the original designs, but that would take ages.

Being inspired by something 30+ years ago does not mean every single part of UI presentation is mandatory to this day. Even modern roguelikes are obviously well beyond that, plenty of them will outright tell you what an item does or how it differs from others down to the percentages.

I think this is just a difference of opinion though like how the imperfections of the past become defining nostalgic points as they're no longer forced. Like film grain or the sound of certain audio playbacks.
>>
>>689326036

>>689262018
is Dancer a new class?
Is Blacksmith also a new class?
>>
>>689328547
But SaGa also did go forward on that since like the PS2 days.
Nowadays you get detalied breakdowns on basically everything outside extremely technical aspects that are frankly just there for minor flavour, it's impossible to say the games are impenetrable or needlessly obscure now since they spell out basically every single thing including turn order and enemy HP.
>>
>>689329101
Both are new classes, what they actually offer is unknown though
>>
>>689329403
Any chance of a new weapon type or no?
>>
>>689329880
Nope, everything is the same on that.
They gave some basic attack spells to Hydrology and Terrology, there's some new spells in general that did not exist in the original game like Flashfire, presumably there will be new techs as well, but there's no new spell school or weapon type, and overall the mechanics are worse
>>
>>689329208
The PS2 is over 20 years old. Like the PS3 was out 18 years ago, and roguelikes weren't starting to become more mainstream until 2011 minimum.

I do think you're overestimating what they're telling you though. Like if you decided you want Gerard to use fire magic, you don't have a single clue as to when he'll learn a new spell, what that spell will do, what it'll cost, how strong it is, if strong enemies are even going to be weak to fire, how many times you'll be able to use it in a fight, any of that until you already are there.
>>
>>689327543

>>689330740
>Like if you decided you want Gerard to use fire magic, you don't have a single clue as to when he'll learn a new spell, what that spell will do, what it'll cost, how strong it is
And that is different from any RPG....how?
>>689331010
The one who actually started this was not Kawazu but Ichikawa.
Ichikawa was the one who asked the XEEN director if he wanted to do this remake, Kawazu was only called in for some minor advice, he doesn't have a horse in this race which is why he's silent about it.
As to whether Ichikawa did this of his own volition, that's also up to personal interpretation since this remake wasn't something anybody asked for in the first place and came out completely out of the blue as well, which isn't the modus operandi of the team.
All signs point to corporate meddling.
>>

>>
>>689331471
You were just complaining that they don't have enough obfuscation, but the only new things shown don't give any actionable information until you already have it.

I think you're just nitpicking like crazy and looking for reasons to be upset.
>>
>Actually, Ichikawa was the one who invited me to the SaGa team. So there's that connection there. The one and only thing that Ichikawa asked me to do when I took on the role as the producer of Revenge of the Seven was that he wanted to make this game into something that a lot of people would play ... more people who haven't played the SaGa series yet. That was really the only direction that I received from him, and he didn't really provide any other specific details on how he wanted this game to be. So in terms of the actual gameplay elements, he didn't have any specific orders.

>In terms of Kawazu, he actually did give me free rein and he was comfortable with me taking this game in the direction that I wanted to. That being said, there were some elements of the worldview of Romancing SaGa that I wasn't very clear on. So, there were times that I would consult him and ask for his advice on how we should do certain things, which he did provide input on.

Yeah, that's a major issue SSG and EB have, the pacing is too focused with no donwtime like other entries so you burn out extremely fast unless you're a Gregor tier autist like me, and I still got a severe burnout after 200+ hours.
Other entries have way better downtime so you can keep playing them longer, admittedly it's because these two games are designed around short bursts rather than long sittings, but still.

Yeah. But the Minions can only realistically steal about 3 Fatestones without your intervention and the first 5 Fatestones barely do anything to the final boss's stats. On top of that you can't give him any stones until NG+, so getting murdered by 10FS Saruin's wholly an opt-in sort of thing on your part.
Minstrel Song Saruin's still dangerous without any stones, mind. He's not just a gimmick like say, Zeromus is; he hits hard and will actively try to snowball by zombifying chars and throwing any pillars you fail to break at you every so often in his second phase.

Absolutely not. It has proper environments and the cutscenes aren't just two portraits talking to each other, or still images. It's not a high budget release but it's clearly above whatever EB is. I don't even want to call it mobile tier because mobile games look better nowadays.
>>
>>689339093
I don't know why you're dignifying anyone who uses nonsense like "safe horny" with a serious response.
>>
>>689339093
And it's all cheaply done. at least EB or SSG didn't lie to you about that and are also better games mechanically.
But hey, you do you, I'd rather pay 50 bucks for a good game that looks mediocre but with no promise made on that than a low effort remake with generic UE assets, mediocre animations and most importantly, garbage gameplay that isn't even in line with the series standards
>>
>>689334190
I buy games, just now ones with denuvo. Can you read, retard?
>>
>>689339945
>And it's all cheaply done. at least EB or SSG didn't lie to you
What the fuck did you mean by this? How is this remake "lying" to you? It's evidently higher budget than both EB and SG. You insisting that it's just as cheap again and again doesn't make it true.
>>
>>689340606
It is higher budget, doesn't mean much when the people who made it are incompetent and can only deliver mediocrity.
If you think it's an inherently better game because it has modern JRPG bloat and some middling UE environments that will not even amount to a passing memory it's on you, having a higher budget doesn't mean the game isn't cheaply made, otherwise Star Wars Outlaw and other assorted trash like Dragon Age would be 10/10, when in truth they're cheap garbage.
This game's the same, mediocre eyecandy made for normalfags who don't care about this series, especially since it doesn't even play like SaGa anymore outside of some vague surface elements, if you ask me that's way cheaper than actual good games like EB or SSG.
>>
>>689341210
>>689339945
You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about when people say that a game looks "cheap".

what exactly did they change that makes it no longer play like RS2? be specific.

That kid is probably pulling more pussy in a week than the majority of the Final Fantasy male leads get in their lifetimes. Game looks like it was made with five bucks, though.

Oh I don't know, like the entire damage mechanics for instance and combat design, the fact that you have save fucking points in a SaGa game, just a couple of unimportant things really
>>

You should, it's a great game and this remake is not doing good service to it

I'll try to give you a quick rundown of the basics
>TP is EXP, every proficiency level takes a certain amount of TP and the amount needed is bigger for each proficiency
>TP is only awarded to the actions you use in a fight, if you only use sword attacks you'll only get TP for sword proficiency, but if you use something else then the TP amount is divided equally between the proficiencies related to the actions you took in battle
>Global Levels work the same, except the TP you gain for personal proficiency stacks on Global levels, e.g. if two people get TP for swords your Global level gets two characters worth of TP
In short, unlike other entries in the series it's actually better to sorta spread yourself in fights as global levels are arguably more important than personal levels, at least, this is true for the original game as you need certain global level threshold to learn new spells, the remake changed that so things would probably be different.

So that is why I keep dying.
>>
>>689343948
Unironically one of the more heroic out of the whole bunch, they should have gone with his chad design instead of the fuccboi design from Emperors
>>
>>689344060
He was a coward and not even the other heroes liked him.
>>
>>689344020
Yes and no.
You keep dying because RS2 has enemies that are actually dangerours and can easily one tap you regardless, but you probably also keep dying because you can't kill them as fast as you're supposed to for many reasons, it's a bit of both really.
RS2 is built around high lethality though, you are supposed to take losses and power through them, that's the game's main theme really and why in gameplay terms death is just one step forward toward the end of the game rather than a game over, outside of Leon's prologue and the very last generation, that is.
>>
>>689344169
And bokuohn was a shady opportunist, Dantarg a dumb meathead and Subier a lazy guy who just got in the club because of nepotism, doesn't mean they didn't change, well technically Ku was the only one of the bunch who got some actual growth as a person precisely because he started out as a coward.

If his backstory is going to be about a coward growing into a hero it makes sense to pick the design that makes him look younger and more inexperienced.

>>
>>689344690
The new designs don't really follow that logic and the Seven Heroes also got constant redesigns through various spinoffs and side material, the only ones who have been somewhat stable throughout the year are Wagnas and Dantarg, everyone else looks COMPLETELY different from the original designs, and some of their backstories got changed as well, Ku being one of the biggest cases of that in how he wasn't really the butt of the jokes originally, that's something that started with Emperors Saga making him less villainous and more relatable.

SaGa fans barely care about graphics and EB was still derided by a lot of them on first look for barely looking better than SG 6 years later. No one is asking for a fucking AAA budget but at least something like Minstrel Song with better proportioned characters.

EB was fantastic. It has the best turn based combat ever designed.
>>

>>689346158
Not really, DS enemies hit like wet paper most of the times, especially since in that game you can upgrade armor to ridiculous degree, in this game even little shits like Misers can tear your asshole apart if you don't actually build of specific defense.
RS2 was just built around high damage enemies to enforce the death component of progression, it's very different from most other entries, RS3 enemies for instance are total weaklings outside of some major bosses, mid BR enemies in RS2 have truly ridiculous shit like access to four digit damage potential in a game where your hp caps at three digits, it's potentially super brutal.
>>
>>689290791

>>
>>689343583
What's global level mean, the HP/BP of characters?
>>
>>689347441
No, Global Levels are proficiecy average for your characters.
If you like at your characters' attributes, you'll see how they have all sorts of proficiencies on top of their HP and TP/MP, since the game is wildly nonlinear and there's not really a set order in which you go through its content, Global Levels exist as a way of carrying over your progress regardless of the way you play through the game.
Global Levels are basically an average of what your characters will start out like in terms of HP/TP/MP and their proficiencies, the reason why freshly recruited characters at the end of the game start out much stronger than they were at the beginning of the game is because of Global Levels which readjust all of their values outside of the core stats, they also allow you to learn new spells as you can only develop new spells through various thresholds in your Global Levels.
The remake handles things differently though and it's not particularly clear what Global Levels end up doing since magic learning is completely different now, but maybe the research center will still take them into account for some things and won't be just a general adjustment mechanic.
>>
>>689312139
The PS2, game was god tier. Stop being a seething faggot who gets irrational that another series that isn't FF gets attention
>>
>>689347957
So is it the average of all the proficiency levels of the main character, the 5 people in your party, or every potential person you could recruit that's alive combined? Like in the demo there were 4 different people you could swap into your party, so if they counted against your level I could see it being worth training everyone. Or it could be weird and be worth killing people you won't use so they don't weigh your average down for new recruits.
>>
>>689348792
Refer to>>689343583
Global levels don't use your current party as a measure of anything, it's the other way around, your party gets adjusted according to your Global Levels, which grow continuosly through the game as all TP gained matters for Global Level growth
>>
>>689343712
It's not mindlessly kill slime until level up 5x for hours so it's nonsense

As in progressing without a care in the world for your event rank, it's not that bad but basically there's more reasons to avoid getting into constant encounters. It's designed to be replied with each of the characters (the main quest is actually not that long) so it's okay to "fuck up" the first few times since you learn from it

>>689350996
The nice thing about Frontier is that each character has their own campaigns and they're generally pretty short, so you get the whole Saga progression experience in a highly compressed form.
The game also feels very disjointed and straight up unfinished in parts, but if you can look past that it's a pretty good time and a solid entry point for the series
Minstrel Song is a MUCH more well-rounded experience and arguably the best game in the series. It does have the whole Event Rank thing that typically stresses out new players but it's not that big of a deal as long as you don't go out of your way to fight regular battles.

In the remaster you unlock new superbosses for further NG+ cycles and an even more unhinged version of 10FS Saruin.
Outside of a couple of exceptions in their original releases, SaGa included optional CBT versions of the bosses since Romancing SaGa 2 for the people who think the final bosses were not already hard enough, they're really just for bragging rights for the most part outside of the remaster of Minstrel Song and the optional final ball busting version of the final boss(es) in Emerald Beyond which gives you some busted accessory AND bragging right.
