did you even read the novel?
It has the best portrayal of ~~Mukuro~~(unlike how the retarded DR3 anime did) and it revealed ~~how Junko made everyone lose their memories~~.
And because it isn't a game, Ryoko being the protagonist means she didn't need to be written as a self insert half of the time (and ended being the most interesting one of them all), and how the story didn't need to follow a formula and was its own thing
