I haven't played a fighting game in like ten years since I emulated Tekken 3. Ended up buying T7 the other day since it was on sale and I'm so shit. On one hand I'm having fun, but at the same time I feel like the game is just constantly telling me "this genre is not for you". Just barely scraped through the main story today and been doing treasure battles. Haven't dared to touch online yet since I'd probably just get juggled to death. Here's a question, when I look at the move list for a character, there's like over 100 different moves for each one. How many would a typical player know for their main? Is it enough to just be able to read openings rather than knowing the entire moveset for like 40 different people

You should even be able to lookup like a list of the top 15 moves for each character to give you a starting point. Nobody's going to regularly use their entire movelist especially if you don't count usage in combos. Tekken has fairly bloated movelists and is really knowledge check heavy compared to other FGs. Even very high ranking players don't know all the matchups remotely well and probably have very little experience with more obscure characters. This can make it a very frustrating game to learn so you shouldn't feel bad for having trouble especially in a genre you're new to. Everyone felt the same way at some point.
