The animations may be stiff and the script not all that great but it was the introduction to an entire brand new sci-fi universe and clearly they knew what they were doing at the time because it very quickly became extremely popular and beloved. It was a big deal in gaming, even got on mainstream news, compared to Andromeda and Anthem, they have experienced a downward trend for sure. Anthem had impressive visuals and a huge marketing campaign but their bread and butter was never in multi-player coop, and they were so bad at that they couldn't even figure out weapon scaling. People were using starter guns their entire run. You can blame that on EA but it was just a very large misfire. The poorly implemented high price shop, the balance issues, even by their standards an unimpressive story, right after Andromeda? For sure they have degraded.

Baldur's Gate was a good game, but it's absolutely flaccid nowadays for the same reasons, KotoR got rid of the isometric perspective and also added some of the earliest dynamic alignment systems and gave updates to your companions every time you completed an adventure, letting you get to know them and complete story arcs entirely based around their shit. It's basic stuff now that's in every fucking RPG but it was one of an extremely small pool back in the day, which is why it's aged like dogshit. Going back to, say, Baldur's Gate and trying to talk to a companion is a completely different experience because they might have the exact same talking points the entire game with no changes despite being 10 levels higher, and you pick your alignment at the start of the game without any ability to change it later on.
