will we ever get something like UFO50 again?
Cyber owls is so shit. Let's make a long as fuck game but make you go through it deathless yeah that's a great idea. I keep getting filtered by the boss of the Chicago level which I play first. Why does this game have no upper attack options causing me to lose all my health in the elevator? Fist hell knows not to do that shit even though you can throw
>>6932869091. You don't have to cherry everything2. Chicago boss gets beaten by charged punches from afar and elevator is easy, jetpack guys start shooting when you're under them, so stay in the middle
>>693287348>you don't have to cherry everythingI'm 46 games deep anon yes I do
>Thought i'd give Elfazars hat another go after sometime of not playing it and fumbling on the third level falling into pits>Get a flawless cherry first try without dying onceThis is the 7th time this sorta thing has happened, leave a game I sucked at for a while only to perfect it on the first try. Cute game otherwise, love to play more of this type of game Have yet to get the garden gift though, and no clue how to initiate the bonus round
>>693287882>find place with nothing to shoot at>shoot at nothing
>>693286221Not for at least a decade, man.Campanella 3 cherry is gonna happen today guaranteed. I can get perfect on at least two of four segments in the first three stages consistently. That’s 1200 points right there and you only need 1500 for the cherry. Now it’s just about surviving. Got to the fourth boss.
>>693285869Buy an ad
>>693286909I agree, that game is bad. I don't know if they tried to create the idea that it was the last game, so it was ambitious, but that thing of several game genres within one is typically what you expect from indie games that like to “subvert” expectations, and has nothing to do with the general philosophy of 1989. In fact, as someone who appreciates old games, one of my biggest complaints about UFO50 is precisely its lack of ability to really portray the era, because all the games there are basically modern indies, in terms of aesthetics, mechanics, even fucking genres (it's not uncommon to find genders that became popular in the 2000s or 2010s).Basically, the historical representation of UFO50 is quite flawed, and I honestly think it's a big problem because it's one of the points of the game. People aren't giving a damn about it, but I think a serious review should take into account when a proposal to portray a historical period fails.
>Barbuta>Combatants>Onion Delivery>magic gardenAll trash.
>>693288958That’s the entire point, to bring a modern perspective within the limitations of classic games. It’s in the store page description.
>>693285869this game has a LOT of bass lines to pick fromhttps://youtu.be/BBgUUsD1yb4Thanks Eirik
>>693286221this game came from TIGSource forums being full of small good indie games over a decade ago, so it won't ever happen again
Godsblood prototype list number makes sense, Paint Chase prototype list number probably makes sense, but Campanella prototype list number makes no sense to me
>>693288958they have admitted for a while prior to release that the era timeline is moreso a way to limit graphics and technology in the early catalogue moreso than to be an exact recreation of real life technology advances. The last 3rd of the catalogue is very much inspired by mid to late era snes games and that clearly was much later than 1989 IRLAlso why would you complain about the genres? Thats like the best part of UFO 50 is exploring what modern genres could've looked like back then
>>693288782>filtered by Mini and Max
>>693289090git gud
>>693288958you occasionally had multiple genres in one game back thenBayou Billy, Golgo 13, and Rescue: The Embassy Mission come to mind
I just bought UFO50 a few hours ago. What i should know before starting up?
>>693293104Off the top of my head, play the games in chronological order, don’t feel like you need to beat everything first go, don’t be afraid to fail, and not every game will be your cup of tea
>>693288958>but that thing of several game genres within one is typically what you expect from indie games that like to “subvert” expectationsBattletoads, the game it's blatantly ripping off alongside the obvious Cheetahmen homage, is also a "several genres in one" game.
>>693293339>play the games in chronological orderSoo from 1 to 50, right?
>>693293104youre going to like some games and hate othersdon't approach it as a mini game collection, every game in it could have easily launched standalone back in the 80sdont feel compelled to play through in chronological order and don't feel compelled to cherry each game right awayPilot Quest has idle mechanics, start it up do what you can in base camp, and leave. Come back later
>>693293423For an authentic experience yea, you get to experience the game’s company evolve throughout its timeline
Waldorf's Journey cherry ending was so sweetWaldorf just goes back to sleep, what a lad
>>693289090Onion Delivery is great actually except the sewer leakage stageBarbuta is a game you have to be invested in, without the candy it's a pain to get through but I appreciated it
>>693293339People will yell at you to start Pilot Quest first but it doesn't really matter, play however you want
Need Alpha
>>693294412Meant for >>693293104
Mortol is kind of overratedFunny concept but there's too much trial and error
>>693294412I personally wouldn’t make pilot quest your very first game. For me I started it up after getting through the first 20 as a decent side quest from the other games
>>693294494What would an interaction between her and Samus look like?
>>693286221no, but you can download a Turbografx/PC-engine romset and get roughly the same experience, only the games are longer
>>693294568It’s a puzzle game. You can get right back to where you were in no time because stages average about five minutes. It’s about finding the most productive way to sacrifice yourself to get extra guys and to kill as many enemies as possible. That’s all there is to it.
>get all the way to the second metal gear section in cyber owls no deaths>get stuck on terrain and get blown up and lose a lifeLOL! I hate my life!

>>693296193You can use arrow and then while flying use rock or explode to optimize a dude's life. That's the extent of it I think
>>693296895I didn't know that, thank you
>>693289090only combat ants is correct
>>693289090>filtered by onion deliverylmaosounds like quibble race is more your speed
>>693286221I wonderThe somewhat cold release this got tells me we might be reaching the end of nostalgia loving games and this was an insane project from among those to begin with
>>693285869If it wasn't for that funky tune the abyss would be terrifyingWhat's with all those eyes in the walls man
>>693289451The last stage is amazing toohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YotS_swy6Bk
>>693294712>but you can download a Turbografx/PC-engine romset and get roughly the same experienceI spent most of my 20s to 30 doing this. I would disagree that the experiences are similar.
>>693293104if you start with pilot quest you wont have that feeling of I should have started this earlier when you get to it, but besides that I think chronological is good. It kinda makes me feel like im playing the game center cx games that way
>last garden item is divers >tried starting four times but can't do more than 2 combats before having to go back upIs this how the game is supposed to be played? Shit is not fun
>>693299013>if you start with pilot quest you wont have that feeling of I should have started this earlier when you get to itI don't think anyone had that feeling because everyone was told ahead of time. Anyway it doesn't matter, Pilot Quest is 5 hours long.
>>693286221Probably not of this size and scale. The kind of community that would grow on tigsource isn't really something you can replicate anymore, so the amount of people who would and could contribute to another set of 50 is increasingly few. Most devs would publish instead of withholding their game for the rest of the package, Mossmouth has the comfort of having multiple games already their belt to subsidize this endeavor.
>>693298885The entire last stage i'd say is among the absolute best in the collection. I so badly want more of this game
>>693286221No way, but would like to see this concept done even if on a smaller scale. Maybe say 5-6 games in various small collections
>>693289090Magic Garden is super fun though? I've nights where I just chill out and play it for hours. It's so fast paced and reseting is always really quick. Plus the later seasons change the difficulty while also not making it more difficult than the earlier bits.
>>693286909OK now I make it semi consistently to the second half but still die due to Guin or octavios section. Sometimes the missile in huxley's section also says fuck you and boxes you in with adds you can't avoid which is an unavoidable death. I'd rather just play contra
>>693296895You can chain constantly until you explode. Arrow Rock Arrow Rock Bomb works.
>>693288958the eclectic mix of game genres reminded of that one Lone Ranger game for the NES
>>693296193for true extralifemaxxing, every switch/explosion should have you kill as many enemies as possible in the process
>>693299519I had that feeling because I wasnt told ahead of time
ok but what's the deal with this thing
I finally made it to the core in Campanella 2 and just got creamed, lol. I do feel I'm getting better, thoough. Felt like the first time I made it to the Temple in Spelunky. I still make stupid mistakes from time to time, I still occasionally run out of fuel, but I'm developing a feel for how the levels are structured and how to stay safe.
Hot foot feels like the only game that they weren't able to convert properly to 1p. Guess 49 out of 50 is a pretty good track record.
>>693287882>leave a game I sucked at for a while only to perfect it on the first trysame>>693302401no one knows
after a month and a half of threads I'm surprised most of the significance of cyber owls is still lost on you fellas
>>693306479>game 46>dedantcannot be a coincidence
and now... the cyber owls.
just cherried combatantswhy did tao do it, bros?
>>693307642he was the protagonist of his own story
>>693307751meant that both ways I guess lol
>>693286221Other themed fake old game collections already exist. It's more the size and scope of UFO 50 that's not easily repeatable.
>>693288958I'd rather the modern design with some nostalgia bait, if you want true-to-life jank of older games just play games of that era. Even barbuta is expertly designed and takes a lot of queues from modern exploration puzzle stuff, the design isn't nearly the same leap in logic shit of actual adventure games in the 80s and it's better for it
I didn't expect to have my bushido balls busted so fucking hard. Does anyone else find the double tap for your weapon inconsistent?
>>693286221>>693308470you can always take a look at locomalito's stuff but you're not gonna get ufo 50's visual consistencynot indie but take a look at konami's MSX library. i'm sure it served as a big inspiration.
>>693300779Got it. Wow that was hard. Not that it was too singularly difficult but having to play perfectly with basically no margin for error for 45 minutes. That's tough.
>>693308470When will Alpha get her stand-alone game?
>>693306479Mooncat reminds me a lot of time warp tickers for how surreal it is
>>693312187And speaking of mooncat why are you playing as a different colored mooncat with a light following you in first few screens? Feels deliberately designed to have meaning but also looks like the dev is taking the piss
Rakshasachads is the cherry all the much more difficult than a normal clear? Just curious
>>693313695It's just score, just collect everything in sight, don't lose weapon/egg for extra points, jump down pits.
>>693293104>>693293423Do not play them in order unless you are autistic.
>>693289090>Combatantsidk why they made the tracking on the ai so fucking shitwould it really make the game piss easy if your ants didnt fuck off if you move more than 1 micro centimeter away from them?
>>693293423You have to cherry everything in reverse chronological order to get the true ending
>>693314945Honestly it would be a better game if both your AI and the enemy AI were better. As is it's just Pikmin Dandori Battle but crap.
>>693314815Playing them in order helps you understand the world building more. You understand the callbacks in the later games.
I think you get the best UFO 50 experience if you play the games mostly chronologically but skip around to play anything that looks interesting. sorry purists
>>693317080My take is that games should be dusted but not necessarily gilded in order.
>>693317080i dusted them in order to see what i should focus one
>>693317608Probably the best idea.
Any Bug Hunt tips?
>>693317738KILL BUGSBEHEAD BUGSROUNDHOUSE KICK A BUG INTO THE PAVEMENTJUMP ON TOP OF BUGS FROM ABOVE PUSH BUGS INTO PITSUSE ACTIVE VOLCANOES TO INCINERATE BUGS
>>693313695I got it my first clear so it can't be too bad. There's secret shit everywhere so if something looks useless there's problem something hidden there. And just stick with a single weapon cause the points add up, probably.
>>693317738Kill the red fuckers first, nothing good will ever come of them evolving.Even if one type evolves, you want to make sure the other types don't also evolve. Even if it means you have to deal with some eggs, it's better than needing to deal with multiple evolved bugs.If blowing up a cube will kill 2+ bugs, or even just saves you movement, it's worth doing. You want to kill all bugs on screen even if you get no cubes at all.
Does anyone know where the rest of the Hexan children are? I feel like some are missing still.
>>693318703Fuck me, I found like...three more and declared "yep, that's probably all of them."
>>693320293I found three more in the warren...and I swear I seen more somewhere else. I wish I knew what to do with this shiny thing.
>>693306479>>693306780But what about the games that don't start up properly on real hardware?
>>693306479I still haven't gotten to it
is this game goodi heard it was shitis it better than work time fun
>>693323689It's very goodDon't know what that isIs that the amogus but in the office?
I just beat the first boss in Divers and I'm hating it. Wandering around with no direction and constantly stumbling into encounters which take all your resources in one fight so you have to swim all the way back up is so tedious. Also XP grinding feels mandatory which makes this game even more boring. It's like Porgy but even worse. Also I found a big empty room with funky music. Anyone knows whats up with that?
>>693308575If you hit something (the ball, opponent, a projectile) it doesnt count as one of the two inputs needed to throw your projectile. Thats why it can feel like youre mashing in front of your opponent for a while before your projectile comes out - you keep landing hits on the ball/your opponent.>t. Bushido Ball enthusiast
>>693324180https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztG0-A6lhxsjapanese ufo 50 from 2005
>>693325286Nah UFO 50 is more like the Retro Game Challenge titles on DS.
>>693286221Not of the same scale AND quality anytime soon. But I think smaller-scale projects of similar quality might come out in coming years.
Why does rakshasa somehow play way stiffer than both castlevania and ghost and goblins? It's weird and watching someone play it the game looks easy but half the time enemies get so close you can't hit them and you can only shoot two angles which is extremely limiting.
>>693325945I think it'd be fine if your movement was a bit smoother. The landing squat is some bullshit.
>>693323689the more you understand game design the more impressed you'll be
>>693285869Finally finished picrel and I'm very mixed on it.The good>Maps fit cleanly into one screen without the need to scroll>Good music>Mod system is cool and offers fun risk/reward before you get the free overload upgrades>Flip mechanic is also cool, helps it stand outThe bad>Spike balls. Damage is too high, and early rooms before the armor are fucking filled with them. This alone makes me not want to replay the game.>Final boss kinda sucks. Last form in particular is just waiting for his invul to drop then shooting up>No 'escape' sequence at the end, which I thought was a given since the final zone is so small and linearOverall I would put it top 10, maybe even top 15 games. If the negatives weren't there it would easily be top 3.
>>693325945you can jump away from enemies then shoot down-angled towards them. the flies you encounter 90 seconds into the game teach you to do that, crouch shooting, and precise jump shots. it's honestly a bit much all at once but the rest of the game's difficulty plays out nicely. if you want to just swap to the 5 shooter for that section it should be no problem at all.
Alright...this is my limit. I am going golfing instead.
>>69332729814 hexen words
>>693327298wtf
>>693326049landing squat is to prevent easy and perpetual kitinggame's incredibly forgiving once you figure out extra lives
>>693328162>incredibly forgivingWouldn't go that far. What do you mean by "figure out extra lives?"
>>693328420there are hidden blocks in every level that if you touch, will spawn treasure, a green egg, the false coin that makes you fight the cloud, or an extra life. If you're able to avoid getting hit while you have the green guy, he'll point out where every hidden tile near you isyou'll also get extra lives that just appear once you hit certain score thresholds
>>693328595Oh yeah I knew about that. My struggle is much like radius if you are stuck to the default weapon you're in for a real rough time
>>693323689very good, not at all like work time fun, more a collection of 50 fun short-ish games, the sort of stuff you'd pick up as a $5 indie game rather than minigames like WTF
>>693332213Fuck yeah.
>>693332213Slard, shit's going up in flames you got to get out of there.
has there been any more porn recently?
Is there a way to beat Star Waspir without becoming a shmup autist?
>>693324708>Also XP grinding feels mandatory which makes this game even more boring.i mean isnt that kind of the point though? you have to fight to gain XP so you can dive deeper
>>693333040>has there been any more porn recently?
>>693333101bomb-max with red ship to get through stage 3it wont be easy but it's much easier than any other method
Imagine if Campanella 2 let you launch Big Belle as if it were a golf ball or dream walrus when taking off
>>693333619levels are big enough it would work lol
>>693333989Exactly. In a wide open chamber, it gives you a chance to take a risk to save on fuel when taking off. In tight quarters it's an ultra low-stakes Waldorf putt.
>>693325696this is how I knew I was gonna like ufo 50
>>693308575got the cherry on this. have no idea why
>Finally get a no-death on Stage 3 of Seaside Drive (somehow easier than Stage 2)>Fumble the coin game instantly because I didn't expect a different block setup
>>693334315no continues
Grimstone is alright
I keep on trying at Campanella 2, and I am just really not feeling it. Derek Yu learned the wrong lessons from Spelunky, and it shows both here and in Spelunky 2. The platforming is pretty boring too, and this comes from a platformer fan.
>>693334373best bet is to just no-death 1, 2 and 3, then cruise through stage 4 with zero worries. 2 is really the only difficult stage, and that's just because it throws a lot of different physics at you quickly.
>>693298695Nostalgia isn't going anywhere, it just changes. When this game was originally conceived, the primary market were early millennials that grew up with 8~16-bit pixel art games and bought up everything that employed that style. Now the primary market is made up of early zoomers that are nostalgic for N64 and PS1 era graphics, so indie games are shifting to PS1 filters. Soon Alphas will be nostalgic for Xbox 360 and PS3 era stuff, and so on...Had this game been released on their original (but incredibly naive) target of 2018, it would have sold five to ten times more than it has so far, guaranteed. But the market changes, and between adult shit like raising families, building careers, and just not having the same kind of time and energy anymore, the core demographics for this game have most likely aged out of gaming altogether.
>>693335374Ironically on my current run I actually no-death'd Stage 2 and lost a life on Stage 3 when they throw the second rock cyclops at you. Going into Stage 4 with 6 credits, wish me luck.
Tao Nemeru is up to more than just preservation. Otherwise, why have an employee killed? I think he is semi-involved with a group that will trigger the apocalypse.
>>693334373>>693335374Honestly I found stage 3 to be the most difficult with those ghost. Get way too cautious trying to not die. How I perfected it on my first try, subsequent try, gold run and cherry run I have no clue cause now I choke on it hard
I try to cherry Star Waspir every dayI haven't tried to even gold Caramel Caramel in over a week
>>693335237Campanella 2 was developed by Eirik, not Derek.
>>693318703Holy fuck, cute screenshot.
>>693335374>>693335445>>693335534I did it bros. That's Gold #17
did they deserve it?
>>693336032100% they deserved it It's just a Waldorf killed them before they could do so
I've definitely cleared 1500 points, now I just have to live. Three perfect sections in stage A, two in B, and then three in C.
>tfw you finally figure out that the flipping platform in Campanella 2 gives you 200 fuel
>>693335497First of all if anyone killed Chiffon Bola it was Ian, not Tao.Also I'm not sure we are supposed to take it super literally, everything in Miasma Tower is cloaked in metaphor. Maybe she just died as a side effect of the company pushing her too hard or not giving her the support she needed.
>>693336815Unfuckinbelievable. Lost everything. Stage D is a big jump up from the first three stages, man.
>>693335497I kinda hope it's nothing that deep, I was hoping this game didn't have weird creepypasta shit hidden in it because that's too easy.
>>693336032it was self defense
Finally dusted off and gave an honest try to all 50 games. 17 Golds, 2 Cherries, and 129 hours (some of that is idling and about 25 are Rock On Island which is probably my favorite of the 50 and one of my Cherries). I'll go back to pretty much everything in the future but for now I have other vidya to play.
>>693337373I honestly feel like Tao Nemuru sending all the games into preservation instead of selling them, because he believes in some kind of apocalypse to be stretching suspension of disbelief pretty far.It ruins a pretty grounded story about a group of friends being consumed by corporatism by bringing in a borderline supernatutal element
Almost cherried Campanella 2 despite not golding it yet. I got a lot of hits on the final boss and then died. I would have won, but I took a -4 hit at the beginning of the fight because after nothing happened for 10 seconds, I started walking right and got hit by the boss coming onto the screen. Fuck this game and fuck the devs. FUCK FUCK FUCK. I hate all of you.
>>693338645>It ruins a pretty grounded story about a group of friends being consumed by corporatismThat just seems so generic and surface level though.
>>693339578the CEO sabotaging the company because he didn't believe in hard work is an interesting twist though
>>693339476I am still seething btw, although I somewhat cooled down.
>>693337956Today I played>Warp tankgot cherry. Needed a guide to find on of the hidden levels and 2 or 3 of the coffees that were cancer to get even with a guide. Really liked the level design in this one they make the most of each mechanic they introduce, but there are some fairly janky elements>block koaladid some mid game levels. This almost feels like an anti-sokobon game. Where in a normal sokoban you have these levels that are deceptively simple but then some hidden oversight springs up and takes ages until you find a clever yet really easy to execute solutions, in block koala you have levels that look like incredibly complicated, then you analyze it more and it's literally oh I just have to push this block in a big circle, but then it still takes 10 minutes and 9 of those are on finding places to push junk blocks without causing gridlock. I never thought "so bad it's good" could apply to a fucking video game
>>693340064Block Koala is just bad, dude. For the exact reasons you described. It's tedious more than anything else.
Star Waspir below Caramel Caramel is nonsense
>>693341704caramel caramel has enjoyable parts, star waspir is just pain end-to-end
>>693341887Star Waspir is fun end to endHard =/= Bad
>>693342101lol no>dude just collect egg over and over againwhy is there a spelling component in a shmupif you just made all drops generic, all powerups random, and made the cherry requirement deathless, it'd be a way better game
>>693342101stage 1 is boring autopilot. stage 2 is fine. stage 3 is awful design that you eventually find a way to beat (shmups that require foreknowledge of a scenario are immediately shit). stage 4 is autopilot, less boring than stage 1. the final boss is easy as sin.caramel caramel on the other hand is easy enough to be first-tried by any experienced shmup player (foreknowledge absolutely not required for any section) and inherently has more interesting scoring for the score-chasers with how many different ways you could utilize the camera and the difficulty in actually killing the minibosses.
>>693332213this game mindbroke millions.
>>693317080No degree or adherence to the chronology makes sense to me at all. There's nothing locking you out of playing any of the games in any order, and nothing gained by it.To me, if you don't choose games based on their titles, covers, and descriptions, then it's like you're playing them like they're a job instead of out of any enjoyment of gaming.
>>693341453it's a deconstruction of sokobon
>>693343442>nothing gained by ityou would absolutely miss out on countless minutia of metanarrative details going in a completely random order. for example, discovering the campanella easter egg in golfaria wouldn't seem like much of an easter egg at all if you hadn't played campanella. for me that was a lot of fun because I really liked at least 80% of the games. those that I didn't, I just didn't finish.
>>693343442Why wouldn't you give every game in the pack at least an half an hour try? And why wouldn't you try them out chronologically to see the progression?I understand that stuff like me not wanting to play Overbold until I cherry Vegress is autism, but going chronologically just makes sense no matter whatStill, everyone has their preferences
>>693343442>>693343942This is pure autism, you can play them in any order. It doesn't stop you from putting together the chronology once you have most of them under your belt. If someone was just getting into Nintendo today and asked for game recomendations you wouldn't say "Well you HAVE to go start with Mario 1 to see how the company evolved its design philosophy and follow the careers of all the designers"
>>693344162but many of the best games in ufo 50 are in the first couple rows. not to say mario 1 is a bad game but it's definitely less FUN than other mario games and ufo 50's website is called 50games.fun for a reason

Got the Donka Donka Idol from Nozzlo. It was a rough fucking experience trying to find him a fourth time, I kept just missing him three times in the very first area you enter the wild in somehow. Then he was one room north in the ruins and I laid into him and then finally found a neat trick where the gun stuns him if you're right up against him and he's up against a wall. Melted his health and had 2000 seconds to spare since I spent every last coin I had for energy. The game's still gonna take forever because there's no one selling silk like my last run, and the silos I need to get more ingots for. But if I'm lucky, with this one and Campanella 3 I'll be just one away from 20 cherries.
