what does /v/ think about unity?
i dont think
what gaem
>>693500267It's okay if you have some C# knowledge and want just to code your shit. Unreal requires you to learn about their systems
>>693500492Rust probably
>>693500267Why not just make your own engine?
>>693500824Can't be that he said the game was popular
>>693500901hes doing that with s&box
>>693500267>greedy jewnity does greedy jew shit>undoes greedy jew shit>"Surely theyll never do any of that ever again" how longs it been, 10 minutes?
lol so Unity is completely gone off the deep end again.
>>693500901Because of this
I like it cauz no blueprint and you don’t have to exit the editor every time you write some code
>>693501096just like bethesda and paid mods, Unity will get what it wants from its paypiggies
>>693500978hes not he begged gaben for source2>>693501093>>693501096he used unity and it made him millions so pay up garry
>>693500267He's a godot shill and made the story up.
>>693500901Depends for what purpose.First of all we gotta understanf what game engines do. Most people don't, because look at Catherine. That game was made on an engine where they said climbing was flat impossible, and it's all about climbing puzzles.Second, making your own game engine from scratch when what you're doing is already easily covered by an engine that already exists? That's gonna be more expensive than just licensing one that already exists. However there are times when making your own engine is more practical, for instance trying to use Unity to make a 2D game is gonna break your brain in half. Genuinely easier to just make your own engine there. Don't listen to Unity tutorials, they suck.
Unreal Engine wins again by doing the bare minimum. No better royalty system then "Your first million is free. Then we get 5%." Straight and to the point. No ad shit, no forcing other services, no install shit.
>>693501326>runtime feessure anon
>>693500901And another stupid question, at what point does something become an engine? If I use some simple graphics & input/output libaries in a C++ application, and have the complete game logic just coded in there, does that count?
The fuck else is he working on besides S&box, which was still using Source2 last I checked?
>>693500970Sure, pal
>>693500267Unity has better h games then renpy
They want to charge and make him pay for something that he won't use.
>>693500901Because FOSS is the future.
>>693503326>They want to charge and make him pay for something that he won't use.He used Unity engine pay up
>>693503524>bans you for your political views
>>693504803>keep using the engine anyway and don't need to pay a cent>can even custom the engine if you wantsounds good
>>693500267>use unity>they try to jew you out of your own ass>use godot>barely works and they have no intention of fixing itWhat's the play here? What is an indie dev to do?
>>693500901Most game developers want to make a game, not an engine.
>>693504803ban how? I never interacted with the community, I just grabbed the engine from their site and used it
>>693505064>make first game in unity>Learn about game dev and what you want out of an engine>Make your own engine for 2nd game.
>>693505064>barely worksskill issue
From the desperation of the guys at Unity, they're clearly not making any money. Epic's leaked data shows that the Unreal Engine doesn't make any money either; on the contrary, it burns a few hundred million every year. I think it's safe to conclude for now that free engines that only charge depending on the success of the product are not economically viable. But the funny thing is that even if they can't prove they're viable, it's what the whole industry has decided to adopt anyway because fuck it...This games industry is a fucking joke.
>>693505247Unity just wanted a slice of that Genshin Impact money
>>693505064Either fix the problems with the engine that affect your project, or write your own game focused set of libraries.
>>693504803you can't be banned from FOSSanyone can fork it to anywhere
Yeah well Garry is a notorious liar and lying about this benefits him>Hey kids don't use Unity where a greedy company has control of your game come use S&Box where I have control of your game
>>693505513isnt s&box open source?
>>693500970You're out of touch
>>693505567No
>>693505567
>>693505247More and more studios are ditching their in-house engines in favor of UE each year. Epic can afford to lose money for a bit while they increase their market share. The industry consolidating underneath one game engine is a disaster waiting to happen, it's like watching an insect walking across a venus flytrap. Sooner or later there will be no viable alternative to UE, and that's when the flytrap clamps shut and Epic ramps up their cut.
>>693505653I'm out of time
>>693505912>>693505982I see, I remember someone saying that in a thread onceguess I won't be considering it anymore then
>>693505247>But the funny thing is that even if they can't prove they're viable, it's what the whole industry has decided to adopt anyway because fuck it...I think the fact its not viable is why its been adopted. If Unity and Epic are effectively massively subsidising game development for developers then everyone is going to use them to save money. It'd be like if a shop sold everything below cost and was just losing money. Its unviable but everyone is still going to want to shop there until it goes bust.
>>693506085>and that's when the flytrap clamps shut and Epic ramps up their cut.And that's when everyone just drops UE, which is a thing you can do because UE doesn't have a soul binding contract.
>>693505064>What's the play here?UE5
>use unity>make gazillion shitpost games>none of the get popular>they lose gorillions of dollars
>>693506171S&Box is a user friendly shell being written on top of Source 2 the only reason people were excited about it is because people want source 2 access but Volvo are lazy
>>693505064OpenGL (it will be implicitly emulated for at least 1,000 years so compatibility isn't a problem)
>>693505064RPGMaker, the answer is always RPGMaker.Always.
>>693504803except it has the MIT license, there is absolutely nothign you can do to stop people from using it.Bin Laden and Hitler could team up to write a revenge porn distribution platform on Godot, all the trannies can do is ban you from discord
>>693505064Make your own engine lol
>>693500267I'd be malding if I was a moneyhat at Unity too. Mihoyo uses Unity.
>>693505247Since more companies are making their games on UE, I think epic are going to make much more money off it going forward
>>693501096The problem isn't what they proposed the first time with the install fee, it's their motivations for proposing it and clearly those haven't changed.
>>693507762>cuck licensehttps://youtu.be/2oLuJSFZKEs
>>693508280didnt they make a deal to buy a custom version of unity for short term profits?
>>693505064RPGMaker
>>693508667I dunno.
>>693505247>>693508389Unreal Engine in the future will go back to what it once was. A engine licensed only to mid-big size studios. They have the money to pay for the license. Indies will be told to fuck off because there's no money in them. It's just easier to acquire them.
>>693500267Unity is not profitable. It has never been profitable. Its been tanking ever since its IPO. Unity came up with a solution that no one was willing to pay for, so they're still not profitable. Are you expecting Unity to do NOTHING? Of course they're going to gouge you. Now they've decided to gouge the successful ones because 99% of unity users won't ship their game or get any wishlists, but they'll never be contacted by unity to get gouged because of this. You'll pay for Unity one way or another. It's not free.
>>693508667>>693508280mihoyo is part of unity china. not only do they pay the unity tax, they also contribute to engine development.
>>693506132BUT I'M OUT OF MY HEAD WHEN YOU'RE NOT AROUND
>>693505247>Unreal Engine doesn't make any money either; It makes money, the only thing that burns money is EGS, but that is being reversed albeit slowly.
any time something bad happens to Garry it just means something good happened
>>693505247>consoles don't make money, they sell them at a loss>CONSOLE MARKET IS DOOMEDHow old are you? There is a thing as investments in a platform. Epic will get much more than $300k for a license as it was during gen7
>>693500970Rust is their only Unity game. S&Box is Source 2 and not even out yet.
>>693509389unity merged with an israeli company notorious for using their ads to distribute literal malware a few years agoof course they're going to start trying to jew developers
Quick anons, how would YOU monetize Unity to save it from financial doom?
I really don't understand how people are still playing gmod period it seems like such a concept that has been wrung out completely
>>693501115All bloat
>>693510047go private and return to the old model before subscription, or the subscription actually does something worth paying
>>693510047it still wows me that unity has never shipped a game themselvesthey build these tools without knowing how to actually make a game or what goes into itunreal is happy to live off 5% fee + their internal cash cows like fortnite
>>693510047just tax gacha games more. they can do it. its not like nikke can be like "oh we stop using unity" thats suicide.
>>693510154they were actually working on a game once, but the board fired the entire team and scrapped the thing because they couldn't monetize it like fortnite
>>693500267>Unity now costs 60 dollars to buy and useHow is this so hardRPG Maker isn't free, so why are Unity and Unreal Engine?
>>693510047to start with, by not monetizing it in ways that make less developers want to use it
>>693510497because 60 bucks per user doesn't give unity the revenue it wantsthey've admittedly built a lot of tech over the years, its a huge sunk cost they need to recover60 is going to turn away most students and 3rd worlderswhat unity really wants is recurring revenue from whales, like every single company listed on the NYSE doesbtw RPG Maker is a small team that is planning to move their engine to run on top of godot. their revenue is fine for just paying for that small team
>>693511131Do students and third worlders generate *any* revenue? >RPG Maker is moving to GodotI'm not inherently against this but I'm wondering where you heard itI've been trying to follow their Action Game Maker project but they're very hush hush about it from what I can tell
>>693505064unironically Redot because actual coders are working on maintaining it over godot.
>>693500267He's complaining about a drop in the bucket when his game generates millions yearly. For him its a small % plus he doesn't give us a breakdown on what. Garrys always had strong cuck vibes
>>693511820it would be closer to 25%, their revenue is 2 milalso they can't legally charge him that so what they're saying is he has to pay/buy enough services from them to cover 500k a year
>>693511447I don't get the "controversy" about "stealing" PRs from godot/blazium, its all under MIT license, meaning they can take it as can godot and blazium (but they won't due to "principles" or something)
>>693500267Retard scammed me out of money with Rust so i hope his company goes under.
>>693514882>Retard scammed me out of money with Rusthow?
