I kindly disagree. I think it thrives on innovation and novelty. Make it the internet itself in it's early stages (after it broke out of MUDs), extensive roleplay options (Galaxies) or the node system from various games.

Granted, I think the next big thing for MMOs is either in the near future after AI gets better memory to actually facilitate believable conversations indefinitely or in the far future with sword art online tier full sensory technology. For more detail, there was originally 2 species: Yordles and Meglings.
Yordles were the furry ones (Teemo) while Meglings were the blue ones without fur (Tristana/Poppy). This was fairly early in the game's lifetime and they quickly decided to make them all one race, Yordles.
Only later did they decide to make the Yordles into basically fae creatures made of magic. As they updated the old girls, they added a small layer of fur to them. Lulu's the only one without fur now cause she's never gotten an update like the others.

The cardgame has way more female yordles showing they can have a range of furriness.
