Is it just nostalgia or was vanilla wow as magical as it is in my memories?

>Is it just nostalgia or was vanilla wow as magical as it is in my memories?
it's an online game made before internet went to shit on 2007, everything aligned perfectly, and it's not happening again.
>>
It WAS. Isn't anymore.

It was magical. The days when people could say faggot in chat without getting banned, game files weren't mined and everything figured out before patches even drop, all of the zones were new and fresh to you, every server felt like an actual community, people weren't all hiding in their discords, and people had fun doing everything the game had to offer, not just rushing to end game.
>>
>>693912918
it was a good game then and also information was much harder to come by. people didnt study games like they do now either.

if you play it now this is just sad. its not a fun game now.

I played every WoW expansion up to Legion, but I never even touched vanilla.
Classic is over and I hear private servers are either shit or minmaxed to hell and back (or both). Is the single player project a decent way to experience the game?
>>
>>693913487
why dont you just say a different word if you want to say faggot that badly? insisting on playing the same card since 2004 and having zero adaptability to the ebb and flow of the times is indicative of low intelligence regardless of your politics

It was back when the internet was still sort of newish and mostly white. The community was amazing, and can never be replicated again.

It was magical, but only because social media hadn't been invented yet so a lot of the draw to the game was logging into a living breathing world and communicating with other real human beings in it

now that novelty has worn off, and the game has been solved and minmaxed to death

it's fun but just not the same

Playing WoW single-player is like buying a burger then only eating the buns. The single player content in the game is barebones and repetitive and gets boring as fuck really fast. The meat of the game is dungeons, raids and PvP.

A mixture of both I imagine. You probably don't remember all the tedious shit or you didn't care at the time. But the memories you made presumably with homies are real. Unfortunately even if vanilla WoW came out in 2024 the culture's shifted and MMOs aren't the same anymore. Most people are AFK watching shit on their other monitor or are playing 20 clients at once with automation software

>>
>>693912918
Speaking as someone who didn't play much of it until 2019 (I played a bit from 2004 to 2008, but not on my own account), it actually is a very good game.
Classic WoW also still attracts a pretty fair amount of friendly, like-minded players, but the culture is obviously nothing like it was 20 years ago. I'd say it definitely was as magical as you remember it, but the magic isn't really possible to recapture anymore, at least not fully. It's still a fun game.

Personally, I think if a developer today took a really good look at worked in this game and tried to make something that actually iterated upon it substantially that they could have a hit on their hands. Seems like nobody wants to make an MMO anymore that isn't either a more streamlined version of this game (for the worse) or more of an ARPG than an MMORPG.
>>
>>693918673

but now it's as big of a problem if not bigger than things like game mechanics or update schedules

What >>693916629 said but it's STILL better than playing with actual ""people"" who still play retail/pservers. No matter how shit modern WoW is, the playerbase will always be even worse somehow.
>>
>>693916629
>>693913695
just set xp/gold/drop rates to a level where you aren't required to do every "kill 15 rats" quest and you can limit yourself to the long storyline quests.

as far as raids and dungeons go, the bots are pretty close to the competence of players. for better and worse. but its really nice to know that if the bots fuck up, its your fault, rather than them just being irrevocably shit.
>>
>>693919271
You can be heavily engaged in sometihng and be pragmatic enough to realize you have other obligations. If you're a teenager, mommy and daddy aren't going to let you miss school to play a game. If you're an adult you can take off but then you miss pay unless its a sick or personal or vacation day. And most people would use those for real reasons.

If you were a neet or a troglodyte from some third-world hellhole it was easy, but most people playing in 2004-2007 weren't neets.
>>
I'm rooting for that anon in the gamedev threads who wants to make a standalone WoW battlegrounds-style game. Sounds like fun.

Nostalgia. It's not bad by any means but OG Vanilla was primarily a result of the internet at the time.
It was never particularly difficult. Addons existed at the time. Guides, ways of immediately figuring out what to do in quests, and you could easily glide through leveling even back then. The people who were online, let alone playing an MMO were simply a different type of people. The internet itself was still far different as well so people engaged with it differently unlike now where everything is heavily sanitized, moderated and controlled.

It actually was that magical. You can't go back though. All the fun has been optimized out of games. There is no more magic or mystery or discovery. People datamine shit now before it's even out. Even if people didn't datamine shit, streamers and reviewers and whoever else get the game weeks or months earlier than everyone else to put out guides on how to optimize the game. Shit's just not how it used to be anymore.

Plus, most people's computers sucked back then. Internet kinda sucked too. The internet also hadn't been ruined by zoomers and third worlders yet. Realm Forums will never be a thing again. Discord exists. Etc.

it's been said a thousand times but it had less to do with WoW as a game eand more like the general zeitgeist of internet culture at the time
people were eager to interact and interacting in this way was very novel
if you played both in 2004 and classic in 2019, classic was absolutely nothing like playing it back in 2004 and it has everything to do with the way people were

if you play WoW today it's barely even an MMO at this point, it's more like a 3D diablo with a subscription fee

just because they were mentioned doesn't mean they should exist or be playable races (look at draenei or pandas and their 1 reference in warcraft 3), based on lore gnomes were almost wiped out after gnomergan was lost so them being a playable race when they are supposed to be a rare sight mostly common in dun morogh makes no sense. Worgen were the first furfag push on the game and whatever came later was even worse. Though sure goblins/ogres could have been a playable race considering their influence

Being one of the first people to find & defeat ragnaros was pretty magical. Whoever did the early boss encounters was very good at their job. It was like something you had never seen before.
Go from the typical slay orcs quest or whatever to a hidden fire elemental deep in a mountain that would one-shot you and figuring out how to defeat it was great fun.
The death of open world PvP sucked though. They needed to provide an incentive to it (maybe gold transfer on death), but also a lot of casuals don't want to be involved in PvP in any way (because they suck at it), so you end up in this situation where you either ban it and keep your casual playerbase (the sheep) or you allow it and lose the causals and end up with only wolves. WoW basically went the former direction with arena pvp and it got gay.

Black Desert actually combatted this by having stats and such hidden, and it was never datamined. Even damage logs weren't exportable, so if you wanted to compare two equal level weapons, for example, you had to use gut instinct or manually log every hit.
And since skills hit for like 8 - 15 hits apiece, and it was a fast paced game, this wasn't too feasible (I'm sure some autist would've done it eventually if it was WoW levels of popular).

Which is also true for cases when they need to move out of aoe effects. The bots play the classes/roles perfectly but if there’s something else happening they’re incompetent and need to be ordered. So the single player projects are basically just being a GM with extra steps that actually matter
