The map could be modular. But regardless, your high-score wouldn't be limited by datatypes or hard-coded speed limits.

When I was a boy I had a simple toy that was a clear acrylic box, maybe 3 inches on a side and half that tall. In the center was a gently sloped cone with a divot in its peak, and the purpose was to roll a ball bearing up the slope and catch it in the divot. It was so basic, but great fun. Spent a huge amount of time trying to master it. Eventually it was lost when moving around, and I've never been able to find a replacement.

I really enjoyed these things as a kid. I had both of them at some point. Though, in Run Yourself Ragged, if you got all the way to the final dunk, you'd sometimes still miss even though you couldn't really do anything.
I might have learned a life lesson from that game.

Technically this was made after video games were invented. So it was a mechanical game designed to mimic a video game.

If we want to go there, then DnD would be the "prototype" for a great number of vidya today as they tend to include RPG elements.

Yep, this is the exact one I had. Fucking loved this goddamn thing and was absolutely devastated when it broke.

Man, I had several variants of this, they released a huge series of them here in Norway. Never been able to find any info on them online, it's bizarre.
I remember one was called "BMX Race" and had a plastic figure of a bike molded on top of the metal ball, probably the most unique one.

Nope, they were similar, but none of the games I had were that specific one.

But I actually managed to find it now, it's a localized version of the Japanese Epoch Mini Game Series. Picrel is the BMX one I talked about.

Here's another, this was renamed "Crocodile Swamp" here I believe, and the sticker in the middle was replaced with one featuring hungry crocodiles.

I remember the daycare I went to had an insane amount of these marble tracks for some reason and one time the teacher helped us build a track that went up to the ceiling of the classroom. She stood up on a table to build the last bit and everything.

I always was a slightly RICH KID, but I truly felt like some kind of billionaire with a private jet when I had a Rokenbok set.
It was INSANE. Moving the trucks around was just like a video game, the controllers worked phenomenally, you could go multiplayer, build tracks, lift up objects, crash one little truck against the other, it was the closest thing I ever tried to having a video game moving irl on the floor of my bedroom.
you have to understand, this stuff was NOT as cool as it looks, it was even cooler.
All my friends loved to play with it.

This was my jam, I even had two toy steam engines for those tracks that were made up to look like Thomas and Friends
I don't know how but I grew up to be only slightly autistic

Didn't have this one, but remember seeing the ads for it and really wanting it, but never being able to find it in stores.

Nice to finally see how it plays.

I’m pretty sure you’re thinking of Bakugon. My school was obsessed with it for all of two weeks before we collectively moved on.

SS13 and other sandbox roleplaying vidya come close. Obviously vidya roleplaying will forever be bottlenecked by needing actual content and assets in order to do whatever you want.

If you can stomach the moralist handwringing and the fag’s behavior, this video actually has some interesting history on professional war gaming and how it is used by real world countries to prepare and plan.

My parents bought me a super noise toy pinball game that mysteriously enough "broke" pretty quick.

ie they removed the batteries and I was too young to understand it was batttery-operated.

I remember refusing to get into Bakugan out of spite as a kid because my school banned damn near everything kids brought to school, but bakugan ended up being the one fad toy they didn't ban so I missed out on it for nothing.
