I haven't tried but it makes sense, as the default armor is classified as Common Armor and I've seen similar happening to gear that I sold. Even the Griffin, which has the lowest level req at lvl 10, still means you have to run pretty much the entire Velen questline without Witcher armor which is a huge chunk of the game. So your choices until then are the Temerian armor or keeping the starting set, which can be quite tricky later on when even drowners can take you out with a couple of hits.Then in the endgame you can craft the Superior version, and literally just a few quests later upgrade it to the Master crafted one since the game throws out xp like candy at that point.
